The Church, in its Liturgy during Lent, invites us to live the Mystery of God made Man for love of H manity.

At death of Christ which becomes. Resurrection, the source of our hope, we find the Virgin at the foot of the Cross, acceptingas on the day of the Annunciation, God's view of Her and of the world.

We could without doubt evoke the sentiments which invite us to live that drama. Considering the events of Good Friday whichreveal to us the infinite love of God as a Father and

' 1981

the collaboration of a Woman who never questioned her initial "Fiat", we can find the source and the strength of our daily life. In joy as in sorrow, Christ

and Mary show us the way.

The month of May also invites us to a greater devotion towards Mary. With the entire Church, let us revive our fidelity to our own Servite vocation, by following example of Mary, and rediscovering the meaning of "Service" towards the Lord who invites us to follow Him and to take our daily cross in these words: "My yoke is sweet and my burden light".

At this time of Easter, we take the opportunity of the publication of COSMO to offer to all the members of the entire Servite Family, our best wishes for

a HAPPY EASTER.

30,000 lire.

Truly a monumental work which continues the already classic series of "Bibliografie Mariane" to which Fr. Besutti has dedicated so much of his energies and his skill. It has met with words of praise from the "Osservatore Romano" 2/22/81, and been welcomed with admiration by people of studies. It is a work that should not be missing from our libraries or the shelves of those who want to dedicate themselves to the study on Mary.

AA.VV. Il Salvatore e la,Vergine-Madre. · 415 pages. 9,800 lire. ---~@--~~----------------------

Under this title the Faculty presents the acts of the 3rd International Symposium in Mariology which took place at Marianum on October 7-8-9, 1980. This volume is as important as was the Symposium. The theme - which appears as a sub-title - was "The Salvific Maternity of Mary and Contemporary Christologies": that already gives an idea of the content which is developed in a skillful way by speakers of international fame.

CLIOS: Angelus Domini. Celebration of the Annunciation to Mary. -------------- ---------------------------------------Typica Edition. 140 pages. 4,000 lire.

The "Mariale Servorum" has been enriched with this new addition meant to renew our expressions of Marian piety. A long histor~ ~al-spiritual introduction which underlines the links of the Servites with the practice of the Angelus, is followed by three celebrations which put this devotion in a biblicaleucological context. In the appendix, we find musical texts of the Angelusand the three celebrations. Our communities will be able to use this new text in their daily veneration of the Virgin, during the time of Advent as well as during the triduum for March 25, in our Shrines and i.n some solemn celebrations of the Annunciation to Mary.

* This year "The Theatre of the Servites" of S. Maria in Via is celebrating the 20th year of its existence and presented the operetta in three acts for children "Fior di Loto" by Romola Corona. The actors were joined by the students of the Dance School dei Servi as well as by the "Little Singers of S. Maria in Via". The operetta played during 12 days between Feb. 7 and March 3.

* On Thursday February 26, General Councillor Hubert Moons took part in the meeting of the Union of the Members of General Curias which took place at the "Salesianum" in Rome. Fr. Bernard Olivier O.P. spoke on the theme: "Religious and Human Development" . After the conference, there was discussion in small groups on the document recently issued by the Congregation for Religious and Secular Instituteso

* On January 30, Pope John Paul II received in special audience the group of confessors of the Basilicas in Rome. After having welcomed each one personally, the Holy Father gave to each a volume entitled: "L 'Amore Umano nel Piano divino" as a souvenir. Among the group were three members of the San Marcello community: Fr. Ubaldo Todeschini, Fr. Elio Peretto and Fr. Giuseppe Scattolini.

* The feast of our 7 Holy Founders provided an opportunity to the three members of the Liturgical Committee of the San Marcello Community to aid our celebration of Office with a slide and sound presentation of Our Lady, our 7 Holy Founders and the Saints and Blessed of the Order. The evening Mass in the Church found the main celebrant Fr. Hubert Moons interrupted during his sermon by a drunk man. Without loosing his calm, after few moments of silence to restore the atmosphere for preaching , he resumed his homily on the Founders •.•

* On Sunday February 8, San Marcello was host to the Union of Mothers General O.S.M. of Italy. The meeting opened with a Mass in the chapel celebrated by Father General assisted by the Delegate for the Servite Congregations in Italy, Fr. Luigi Bertini. Items at the agenda were: a) Report on the International Feminine Congress O.S.M.; b) Publication of the Acts; c) Regulations of the Union and of the Secretariate; d) Programming for 1981; e) Exchange of information.

* On February 20, Fr. Elio Peretto, at the invitation of Prof. Giuseppe De Gennaio, gave two conferences at the University of Aquila. on "The Teaching of the Christian Writers of the 2nd Century on Creation" . The first conference dealt with the acts of the martyrs, in particuiar the professions of faith made during their trials or at the moment of their deaths, e.g., St Polycarp of Smirne. The second talk examined prayer formulas and demonstrated t hat the confessions of the martyrs and the eucological expressions are .conceptually similar . Both presented themselves

M E S T R E:

The Servite Parish of B.V. Addolorata of Mestre celebrated the feast of our 7 Holy Founders in a very special way, by publishing a wonderful booklet of 24 pages with many photos, recalling the most memorable, eventsin the life of the parish which is celebrating the 25th of its foundation (1955-1980). The first provisional Chapel was inaugurated on December_ 25, 1955.

On October 15, 1954, Cardinal Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, later Pope John XXIII~ had sent a message from Venice: "With all my heart, I encourage the initiative of a new Church dedicated to the Mother of Sorrows: I encourage and I bless the dear Servite Fathers and their collaborators".

This year, after .a week of meetings and spiritual exercices for the different groups of the parish (priests, adults, senior citizens and sick people, youth), Sunday February 22, 1981 saw Cardinal Marco Ce on the premices for the inauguration of the Chapel of the Addolorata and the blessing of the Pieta statue, during a concelebrated Mass in the parochial Church.

In the afternoon, the Choir of the Basilica of Monte Berico, under the skilful direction of Fr. Ruggero Luigi Pitton osm gave a wonderful concert, performing, among other things some pieces composed by Fr . Francesco Ri gobello osm. To the entire parish, our best wishes~

MONTE SENARIO:

* The Community of Monte Senario, in view of the celebration of the 750th anniversary of the Order, has decided to furnish the Shr i ne with a classical pipe organ which will help to dignify the Liturgy. The organ of the Charel of our 7 Holy Founders will be reinforced, completed and placed in the choir of the Church .

The Marin Firm committed itself to having the organ in place on the next 3rd Sunday in September, feast of Our Lady of Sorr ows. The total cost is 50 millions lira ($50,000. U.S.). The Community thanks from the bottom of its heart the brothers and Sisters who have or who will help in the realization of this work which will answer a real need at Monte Senario, the cradle of the Order.

( Fr. Leonardo Valdiserra, o . s.m.)

* The bulletin of Monte Senario (Jan.-Feb . 1981) has published in Italian a very interesting article entitled "We Servites, Following on the 7 Holy Floren~ines". The original English text is by Fr. Joseph Colella osm and was translated by Fr . Luigi De Vittorio osm.

PIETRALBA :

The March-April issue of the bulletin of Pietralba gives a summary of the Shrine's activities during the 1980 season . There were 315 pilgrimages (80 coming from outside the country, mainly from Germany); 4 , 400 masses were celebrated (1,970 by priests of the various dioceses of Italy and abroad), with more than 60,000 communions. Around 300,000 people paid a visit to the Virgin of the Sanctuary during 1980.

IRELAND:

* Through the initiative of Fr. Anthony O'Connell who was elected to the Executive of the Major Superiors Conference in Ireland, a meeting of all local religious Superiors in the North of Ireland was organized. The purpose of the meeting was to develop a special group who could speak out on issues of Justice and Peace in the North. Such a group would have a special importance, because many of the people involved would be those who have a very good knowledge of what is actually happening. The initial meeting took place at Benburb on January 25, 1981.

(Vicarial Newsletter, Ireland , Feb. 1981)

* Our monthly Mass and Blessing in honour of St. Peregrine is growing rapidlyo Last Monday night we had a full house, as many as we usually have for midnight Mass at Christmas.

Servite Priory, Elm Park is the site for the National Shrine of St. Peregrine. Dermot McNeice is the National Director. Letters continue to pour into Elm Park. Dermot and Raymond O'Connell are handling all the work there.

Each community has a special Sto Peregrine liturgy on the first Monday of each month. Benburb has already begun to attract large crowds. The liturgy will begin at Elm Park and the Blakestown Parish in March.

Fr. Eamon McCreave, with some help from Stiofan O'Cuimin, has put together a new St. Peregrine booklet. The booklet is being sponsored by the Third Order and the St. Peregrine Centre.

SCOTLAND:

Glasgow Priory members have joined the Dundee men and the Servite Sisters and lay members in Scotland for another "Servites in Scotland" Weekend at Leuchie, February 6-8.

INNSBRUCK:

The Museum "Ferdin~ndeum" of Innsbruck has published in its review (volume 60 , 1980) an article by Bro. Oskar DUnser osm of Vienna which describes the life and the activity of Dr. Hippolit Guarinoni (1571-1654), who was the architect of our Church in Volderso Through medicine, he met so many people whom he assisted i n living a christian life through his teaching , his music and his writings. One of his sons, Bro. Seraphin, was among the first novic~s of Innsbruck and died in Vienna in 1644. The publication offers many insights into t he Tyrolian environment at the time of the Servite foundation in Innsbruck in 1614 as well as the apostolate of the lay people in that period .

COSMO 3 - 39 - April, 1981

The Priory of Maria Waldrast, due to its ideal location, continues to attract people of the region and from abroad. Located in the mountains at a height of 1641 meters and 7 kilometers from any habitation, people come •to pray, to rest, to recreate and also to have a good meal. The hospitality is cordial. Recently a pupular review declared that it was the most elevated Shrine in all of Austria.

The region during the last months has put into circulation a commemorative coin in gold and another in silver, in honor of the Shrine .

In a pamphlet published recently on the occasion of the consecration of the new Bishop of Innsbruck, it was noted that Msgr Bonifaz Friedrich Madersbacher, born in Matrei and today Vicar Apostolic of Chiquitos, Bolivia, has put in his coat of arms the Shrine of Maria Waldrast in memory of his brother who, during the last war, along with another soldier, hid the Statue of the Shrine, in order to keep it from the hands of the invading troops.

VOLDERS, Austria:

Our house in Valders is full of activity and dynamism. 150 students, of whom 50 are boarders, attend that High School. In 1980, the school football team won the championship of the Diocese of Tyrol.

The Church, dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo, is being fully restored. It is hoped to reopen the Church for worship early next Fall.

CANADA:

The review "Eglise Canadienne", in its :Febo 1981 issue, featured the 15 years of the Seminaire St. Augustin intercommunitary College, located at Cap-Rouge, Quebec and where the Servites manage the St. Philip Pavillion.

The front page shows a photo of the Campus. Inside, a three page article describes the evolution of that centre of studies during the last fifteen years. An interview with the actual Director of the Seminary, Fr. Gerard Biron osm, gives an analysis of the changes that have occured within the Institution during recent years and deals with the hopeful prospects for the future.

" o•o :Fr. Neal Flanagan will be coming back into Berkeley to join us for our Seven Hoiy :Founders celebration. The celebration will involve a prayer service in a large Chapel close by and a wine and cheese party/open house afterwards at the Prioryo Our prayer service include~ slide meditations on the four aspects of the lives of the Founders which are considered by the Legenda: church, society, Marian devotion and spiritual perfection. A fantastic musi~-~;~~p (including oboe and fr ench horn) has been assembled for the occasion. It promises to be an edifying evening of prayer and party. In fraternal spirit, we will join with all of you in

our celebration of this feast. •• "

It will be a terrific boon to our school which is presently overcrowed and to the social life of the parish which is presently quite limp.

* In 1981, we celebrate the lOth anniversary of the foundation of the grass roots Communities. We will be taking a serious look at those last ten years, and at the new Church which rose from the people and in which we all feel involved. We will closely examine the road that has been traveled: how the communities were formed, how they have worked, and all the problems that have arisen. We hope to prepare ourselves to answer present questions and to face a future which will not be easy for a Church which wants to continue to make of the poor its primary concern.

This celebration will not be triumphalist or merely external, but rather a serious reflection by the entire Church at all levels on that realty which is ours

MARIAN BIBLIOGRAPHY:

The Osservatore Romano of Sunday February 22, 1981, in an article bv Gino ------------------Concetti entitled "Bibliografia Mariana", paid special tribute to Fr. Giuseppe Besutti osm.

"After the effort (all but repayed by the academic public) which went into Fr. Giuseppe Besutti's compiling of five volumes of Marian Bibliography (Edizioni Marianum, Rome), the same author now gives us a sixth volume which included publications of the years 1973-1977. This successful series, begun in 1948, is guaranteed of systematic and chronological continuity and becomes even more important

and interesting. "Fr. Besutti is an expert in this kind of publication. He has the patience

of a Carthusian and the eye of an eagle. The number of publications during the last 30 years have been anything but small. The scientific character of the work led him to record only the articles and books which deal ~~-£~~!~~~~ with Marian doctrine. From among the contributions appearing in periodicals, he has chosen those of quality, He has expressly omitted articles appearing in reviews and newspapers with a large circulation but which do not meet the required standards. He has though, reserved a large space for books. Together with the scientific contributions, he lists books of a more popular nature. Science is never dissociated from pietyo

"To facilitate the consultation of the bibliography, he has organized his work according to practical criteria .. , The bibliography has a value in and of itself ••• For this volume, as for those preceding it, Fr. Besutti deserves the highest appreciation ••• "

of Fr. Ubaldo Forconi who died suddenly in September 1980, on the day he was celebrating his 50th of ordination.

He had already sent to the printer that last fascicule which represents the last chapter of the three published volumes which had occupied all of Fr. Forconi's free time. He had foreseen an immense t~sk in March 1972 on the occasion of the first fascicule, he wrote: "It will be a long and difficult task".

COSMO 3 - 44 - April, 1981

OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT MADE TO MARY AND THE INCARNATION OF

THE WORD --------: In a letter of February 2, 1981, Father General promulgated the new "Edition

tipica" of the Angelus Domini. --------------

Thanks to the coordination of Fr. Hubert Moons along withe the CLIOS and the Cloistered Nuns of Colle Fanella, some 200 people (fathers, brothers, sistersand cloistered nuns of the numerous Servite Houses in Rome as well as many Sisters of different Congregations) gathered on Tuesday March 24, for the first solemn celebration of the Angelus at our Servite Monastery in Rome.

The President of the celebration was Fr. Venanzio Ramasso, Vicar General, assisted by Fr. Ignazio Calabuig and Fr. Silvano Maggiani, respectively President and member of the CLIOS. The choir composed of some fifty voices was under the direction of Sister Maurina Milanesi of the Mantellate S. of Mary of Pistoia.

In his homily, Fr. Ramasso, admitting that the practice of the Angelus seems to be diminished or to have disappeared on account of the way of living of the modern world, invited those attending to give new value to the practice. The texts allow us to celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation which manifests the love of God made flesh, the mystery of the "Fiat" of the Virgin of Nazareth, a mystery of decision: from there comes the history of the new creation. The preacher, citing the words of Pope Paul VI, also underlined the importance of resuming the tradition, a practice and prayer of the Church and of the Servites who starting from the Fiat of Mary, find their inspiration.

At the end of the celebration, Fr. Silvano Maggiani gave a short conference about the ceremony developping the answers to four questions he had asked: What did we accomplish? What did we celebrate? Why and How?
