Ceftazidime for Peritonitis in Peritoneal Dialysis
What is ceftazidime?• Ceftazidimeisanantibiotic(drugusedtotreatinfectionscausedbybacteria).Itisusedtotreatperitonealinfections.
Why am I getting ceftazidime?• Ifyouhaveperitonitis(aninfectioninyourperitoneum),yourrenalteammaytellyoutotakeanantibiotic,suchasceftazidime.
• Symptomsofperitonitisinclude:cloudybag,abdominal(stomach)painandfever.
• Youwillonlystarttakingceftazidimeiftherenalteamtellsyoutodoso.
• Youwillbetrainedbytherenalteamonhowtogiveyourselfceftazidimethroughyourperitonealsolution.
What are some of the possible side effects?• Likemostmedicines,ceftazidimemaycausesideeffects.Theseincludeitching,rash,fever,diarrhea,nausea(feelingsicktoyourstomach),vomiting(throwingup)andabdominal(stomach)pain.Rarely,ceftazidimemaycauseanallergicreaction.

• Contactyourhealthcareproviderifdiarrheacontinuesorchangesinfrequencyorconsistency.
Go to the nearest Emergency Department if you have any of the following:
› Wheezingortroublebreathing › Chesttightness › Hives › Itchyrash › Swellingofthelipsorbody › Feelingfaint › Severe(verybad)diarrhea › Flu-likesymptoms
How do I give myself ceftazidime?• Youwillgiveyourselfceftazidimeintraperitoneallyonceadayduringa6-hour‘dwell’.
• Ceftazidimecomesasapowderthatneedstobemixedwithsterilewaterbeforeitisaddedtoyourdialysissolution.
• Instructionsonhowtomix,drawupandadministerceftazidimearegivenonthenextpage.

Mixing and adding ceftazidime to a bag of solutionYouwillneed:• Facemask• Ceftazidime(1gvial)• Sterilewater• Syringeswithneedles(2ormore)• Solu-I.V.™swabs(2%chlorhexidinegluconatewith70%alcohol)
Instructions:1. Yourdoseofceftazidimeis mg
givenintraperitoneallyonceadayduringa6-hourdwell.
2. Checkthevial(s)ofceftazidimeforthecorrectname,strengthandexpirydate.
3. Putonthefacemaskandwashyourhands.4. Openandcheckthebagofsolution.5. Removecapsfromsterilewaterand
ceftazidimevial(s).PutaSolu-I.V.™swabontopofeachvialandscrubfor30seconds.Removeswabsandletairdry.
6. PutaSOLU-I.V.™swabonthemedicationportofthebagofsolution.Scrubfor30seconds.Removetheswabandletairdry.
7. Opena10mlsyringewithneedle.Twisttogethertotightenneedle.

8. Drawup10mlofairintosyringe.9. Injectairintothesterilewater.10.Drawup10mlofsterilewater.11.Injectthesterilewaterintotheceftazidime
vialrightaway.Toavoidfoamingofthemedication,inject the water slowly and down the side of the vial.Removetheneedle.
12.Gentlyswirlthevialtomixuntilthepowderiscompletelydissolved.
13.PutanewSolu-I.V.™swabontheceftazidimevialandscrubfor30seconds.Removeswabandletairdry.
14.Repeatsteps6-12ifasecondceftazidimevialisneeded.
15.Usinganewsyringe,injectairintothevialandimmediatelydrawupthemixedceftazidime.Itshouldlookclear,notcloudy.
16.Vial#1:Drawup mlofceftazidimeandinjectintothemedicationportonthebagofsolutionrightaway.
17.Vial#2(ifneeded):Drawup mlofceftazidime andinjectintothemedicationportonthebagofsolutionrightaway.
18.Mixbysqueezingtheportandturningthebagupsidedownseveraltimes.

19.Onyourdailyrecordsheet,writedownthedrug(ceftazidime),doseandtime/dategiven.
20.Repeatthesestepsonceadayduringa6-hourdwell,asdirected.
Things to remember: ☑ Antibioticmedicinesshoulddwellfor6hours.
☑ 1ml=1cc(Bottlesarelabelledwith“ml”andsyringesarelabelledwith“cc”.)
☑ Medicineshouldalwayslookclearwhenmixedwithsterilewater.
☑ Onlyusethevialofsterilewateronetime.Discardthesterilewatervialafterusing.
☑ DO NOTreusesyringesorneedles. ☑ Putusedneedlesintoasharpscontainerfordisposal.
☑ Mixtheceftazidimerightbeforeyourexchange,orascloseaspossibletoit.
☑ Donotreheatthebagofsolutionafteraddingtheceftazidime.
☑ TheRenalDialysisHomeUnitphonenumberis1-902-473-2155.
