Once our founders, Mark Balaban and Armen Tertsagian, decided to start making confections out of the surplus fruit from their apple farm, they had a tough time keeping up with demand. Locals weren’t just eating Aplets themselves, they were sending them to friends and family far and wide! Excited by their success, the entrepreneurs decided to create a new
business around the candies. Looking to jump-start sales, they introduced “Cotlets,” made from apricots and walnuts.
Soon people were writing to find out where they could buy “Aplets & Cotlets” and a mail order department was born.
When World War II came along, sugar became a rationed commodity, so Mark & Armen’s fruit-and-nut creations became a “batch here and there” operation. But once the hostilities ended in 1945, they sold their other business efforts to concentrate on candy-making full time.
After Armen died in 1952, and Mark died four years later, their legacy was passed on to a new generation of family who would expand the business in new directions... including some of the items you’ll find in these pages! But no matter how much things have changed, Mark and Armen’s dedication to quality remains.
