REGULAR DAILY SCHOOL SCHEDULE:

FIRST BELL: 7:50 a.m. / CLASSES BEGIN: 8:00 a.m. / MORNING RECESS: 9:55 - 10:10 a.m. / LUNCH RECESS: 11:55 - 12:35 p.m. / FINAL DISMISSAL: 2:30 p.m.

“FAMILY ENVELOPES” are distributed to students after 2:00 p.m. on Mondays (or the first school day of the week) and are to be returned the following day. Parents are expected to review all information contained carefully. Details about such things as up-coming events, changes in the schedule, event invi-tations, requests for parent volunteers, and individual classroom requirements are outlined.

FAMILY ENVELOPE SUBMISSIONS: If you would like to request to have an item included in the Family Envelope or “Bear Paw” newsletter, it must be submitted to the principal at: [email protected] for approval in “copy-ready”, reproducible form via an email attachment in Word by Thursday at 10 a.m. of the prior week. All items appearing in the “Bear Paw” and Family Envelope are subject to approval and/or editing by the school principal, and all items/flyers/notices to school families are distributed at the principal’s discretion, and must have a specific potential benefit to our students/families.

JUNIOR HIGH “COVER SHEETS”: Cover Sheets go home on the first day of the week with the Family Envelopes for students in Grades 6-8, and must be returned (signed by the parent) by the student, the following morning directly to their Homeroom Teacher during Homeroom. If a student is absent, it must be returned to the Homeroom Teacher the day the student returns to school. Cover Sheets should not be brought into the office, nor should they to be returned in the Family Envelope. Students turning Cover Sheets in late will receive a “Work Habits” Referral from their Homeroom Teacher, as it is considered part of the students’ responsibility to return them on time.

TARDY TO SCHOOL: Classes start promptly at 8:00 a.m. Students should therefore plan to arrive no later 7:40 a.m. each day (no earlier than 7:30 a.m.) to gather the materials needed to begin class ~ especially Junior High students, who may need to go to their lockers before Homeroom. Parents, PLEASE plan to leave the house earlier on rainy days, or during any ongoing road construction. This helps students avoid tardiness, and ensures a safe speed when driving onto campus. NOTE: Any student not on campus prior to the 8:00 am bell is considered Tardy, and must obtain an “Admit to Class” Referral from the office upon arrival, and before entering their classroom.

“MEDICALLY EXCUSED” TARDY: Students coming to school late from a medical or dental appointment will be given an “Excused” Tardy only if they present SPBS with a note from the doctor or dentist within 24 hours of their appointment. The note may easily be faxed directly from the doctor’s office to the SPBS Fax # at: 805-778-1509.

ABSENTEE PROTOCOL: Parents are required to telephone the school office before 10:00 a.m. each day their child will not be at school (a voice mail message can be left at Ext. 120). CA law specifies that upon their return to school, a note must be sent to the child’s teacher within 48 hours, including child’s name, date(s) absent, and the reason. If the child feels better and comes to school mid-morning, the note should be brought to the school office. Students with fevers must remain home for 24 hours , after the fever breaks.

THURSDAY MORNING STUDENT ASSEMBLIES: Students are expected to be at school on Thursday mornings by 7:50 a.m. when there is an assembly, which is usually held on the basketball courts behind the school. Students may be considered Tardy if they are not there at that time, and therefore may receive a Referral. Assemblies are not held every Thursday morning: please check the SPBS Calendar for the Student Assembly schedule each week.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS: Remember to complete and turn in a “Volunteer Hours” form whenever you volunteer. Each school family is required to earn a minimum of 40 Volunteer Hours during each academic year. Volunteers are responsible to turn-in their own hours, which are tabulated by the SPBS Accounts Manager. Forms are found next to the counter in the school office and on our school website. You must also sign-in each time you are at school and wear a red “Volunteer Badge” at all times while on campus.

PARENTS & VISITORS: For the safety of all our school students, SPBS is a “closed” campus during school hours and admittance is restricted. All parents and visitors are admitted to the school grounds by ringing the intercom located outside the locked security gate at the main entrance. After visual identification by a member of the school staff, parents/visitors will be allowed access. All visitors, including parents, must then wear a red SPBS visitor badge while on campus. All visitors to SPBS are videotaped upon arrival as a safety precaution. In addition, there are 16+ digital surveillance cameras located throughout the school and parish facilities and campus for security/safety.

SPIRIT DAYS/OUTREACH FREE DRESS DAYS: Spirit Days and Outreach Free Dress Days are indicated on the SPBS Calendar. Students who wish to participate in these designated “Theme Free Dress” Spirit Days/Outreach Free Dress Days receive a discount by pre-paying in September for the entire year. An envelope comes home at the start of the year for one-time payment. If you prefer to pay for each event separately, the price doubles. All monies collected are donated to SPB St. Vincent de Paul, help fund our Outreach Ministry projects, and/or are used to purchase supplies for the “Bear Cave” (Student Store). Check the “Bear Paw” and Calendar for the specific dates each month.

FULL “DRESS” UNIFORM: Whenever students attend Mass on Friday mornings with the school, attend liturgies and/or special designated services in the Church, and/or at other times as noted, our male students are required to wear long navy Dennis Uniform pants, and female students must wear their SPBS plaid skirts/jumpers. Please check the school Calendar and weekly “Bear Paw” for the current weekly Mass and para-liturgy dates and times, to see when dress uniform is required to be worn by all SPBS students.

SPBS PARENT-TEACHER ORGANIZATION (PTO) BOARD 2017-2018:

Saint Paschal Baylon School is fully accredited by both W.A.S.C. (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and W.C.E.A (Western Catholic Educational Association), and it is a member of N.C.E.A. (National Catholic Educators Association).

SAINT PASCHAL BAYLON SCHOOL HISTORY:

The great legacy of our parochial elementary school began when Saint Paschal Baylon School (SPBS) first opened its doors in September 1963, with an enrollment of 286 students in Grades 1-6, gathered together in one building. The teaching staff at that time consisted of just four Sisters of Notre Dame and two lay teachers.!

In 1966, a second school building was erected, and another class was added to Grades 1-4 each year until 1970. At that time, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles directed all its Archdiocesan elementary schools to eliminate the second class of each grade, in order to curb rising school administration costs. As classes were eliminated at SPBS, extra classrooms were converted into parish Religious Education offices, a school Library, and a joint Music/Extended Care room.

A Computer Lab addition was constructed, and it opened in the fall of 1989. A building housing a new Kindergarten classroom and new Faculty Lounge was then added in the fall of 1993. In 1997, after 34 years of service to SPBS, the Sisters of Notre Dame withdrew as an order from administrating and teaching at SPBS, due to a shortage of vocations, and the first lay principal of Saint Paschal Baylon School was selected by Msgr. Joseph George, who was our pastor at that time.

SPBS is a thriving 100% Catholic parochial elementary school. Mrs. Suzanne Stewart Duffy, served as Principal for twenty years from 1997 until 2017, and many upgrades and changes occurred during that time period. For example, Accelerated classes and departmentalization for Grades 6-8, a new schoolwide discipline program, and new report cards were implemented in the fall of 1997. The Jr. High Science Lab was added in 1998 as part of the complete renovation of the “upper building”. Air conditioning was in-stalled in all of the classrooms at that time, and classrooms were re-configured to divide SPBS into “lower grades” and “intermediary grades”, thereby creating a distinct Junior High section complete with indoor lockers. During the summer of 2000, the patio/lunch area was re-built: a new patio cover was installed, all old asphalt between the two school buildings was removed and concrete was poured to create a new patio. The Health Room was completely renovated during the summer of 2001, and it serves as an of-fice/work room and Health Room. A new permanent P.E. equipment shed was built near the sports field in May of 2004. During the summer of 2004 the lower grades’ build-ing was completely renovated: the last remaining asbestos was removed; bathrooms were remodeled and Resource and Small-Group Instruction Rooms were constructed.

During the summer of 2005, the SPB Hall floor was retrofitted with new state-of-the-art athletic flooring. A new upgraded surround-sound system was also installed, specifically designed for use with our school’s fine arts productions held in the Hall. Summer 2006 saw the complete renovation of the SPBS Library, with the addition of new technology and computers for students/librarians; student study carrels; custom bookshelves to accommodate our growing book inventory; a fully automated check-out system; and new carpet. During the summer of 2007, we built a much-needed Art Program Room. During the summer of 2009, we upgraded counter tops in the Media Rooms and installed new carpet throughout the upper building. During the summer of 2010 we refurbished the patio roof; added new flooring to the Computer Lab; and continued to install Smartboards and upgrade digital technology in all the classrooms. In 2011 new iMac computers were purchased for the Computer Lab; the Faculty Room and its Kitchen were renovated and new appliances were installed; and the Kindergarten hallway and classroom both received bright new VCT flooring. New textbook series were purchased for the 2014-15 academic year in Religion and Math, and we recently installed a commercial-grade wireless network for SPBS to support our 100+ student iPads. New fire alarm and school wide security systems were recently installed, along with Apple TV software, and SmartBoards in all classrooms. In addition, we installed a new security gate at the school entrance in December 2014. We are pleased to announce a new 1:1 student iPad program beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, due to a technology grant. As we welcome new SPBS principal, Ms. Desiree Tedesco, SPBS currently has an enrollment of about 275 Catholic students for the 2017-2018 academic year!

Heavenly Father, You sent Christ Jesus Your Son to wash away the sins of all mankind through His perfect sacrifice, and You cleansed our departed

Month of the Divine Infancy

Christmas Prayer for Families Loving God,

During this holy season of Christmas, we ask for Your blessing on all families. Let Mary’s openness to your wondrous ways be an inspiration to place all our trust in you. Let Joseph’s courage provide hope during times of anxiety and uncertainty. Let Jesus’ life ignite all families with a spirit of light and love.

May the grace that encircled the Holy Family widen to embrace all families. For this we pray… Amen.

Month of the Holy Eucharist

Prayer for Easter Almighty and Eternal God, through the power of your goodness we have been saved from eternal death

and given new life. Look with mercy and favor on your entire Church, and bring lasting salvation and hope to all humankind. Let the world see that, in You, the broken are made whole and the fallen are lifted up. May our celebration of Christ’s victory over sin and death show its effect in the way we live our lives -

as a “Resurrection People”. We ask these things in the name of our Redeemer and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Month of Mary, Our Holy Mother “The Memorare”

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known, that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother. To you do I come; before

you I stand sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer them. Amen.

Month of the Sacred Heart

PRAYER TO OUR SCHOOL and PARISH PATRON, SAINT PASCHAL BAYLON (1540-1592) Patron Saint of Eucharistic Adoration, Cooks, and Shepherds:

O God, who did adorn the Blessed Paschal, Your confessor, with a wonderful love for the mysteries of Your Body and Blood, mercifully grant that we may draw from the Divine Banquet the same fullness of spirit that he did.

Saint Paschal, help us in our devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and to Mary, our Mother. Amen.
