Queen’s University and BellLet’s Talk have pledged to con-tinue working together to advancemental health research.

At an event on campus Tues-day, Jan. 24, Bell Let’s Talk an-nounced a $1 million gift toQueen’s to renew the Bell CanadaMental Health and Anti-StigmaResearch Chair. The inauguralholder of the world’s first anti-stigma research chair, HeatherStuart, has been reappointed tothe position for another five-yearterm.

“The Bell Canada MentalHealth and Anti-Stigma ResearchChair positions Canada as a leaderin advancing research into the per-vasive stigma around mental ill-ness, a significant barrier to treat-ment for many people. Thesupport of Bell Let’s Talk enablesDr. Stuart and her team to continuetheir important work in findingnew ways to leave stigma behind,”Principal Daniel Woolf says.

Dr. Stuart’s advocacy work hasled to greater awareness and thedevelopment of best practices instigma reduction. She has sharedbest practices in anti-stigma inter-vention and outreach with organi-zations around the country andinternationally, including theMental Health Commission ofCanada and the World PsychiatricAssociation.

The profile of the Bell CanadaMental Health and Anti-StigmaResearch Chair continues to grow.Dr. Stuart brings her work to audi-ences across the country throughpublic lectures including inToronto, Ottawa, Halifax, andVancouver, to date.

“I am extremely grateful forthe support of Bell Let’s Talk andQueen’s and I look forward tocontinuing my work with partner

organizations to develop and eval-uate mental health best practices,”Dr. Stuart says. “This work will in-clude significant knowledge ex-change through speaking at con-ferences, consulting withpolicymakers and others, andpublishing in peer reviewed scien-tific literature.”

While one in five Canadianswill experience a mental illness intheir lifetime, two-thirds of thosewill not seek treatment for fear ofjudgment or rejection. Working toend that stigma is a key pillar ofthe Bell Let’s Talk mental healthinitiative, alongside access to care,research, and workplace mentalhealth. In 2015, Dr. Stuart and BellLet’s Talk developed the “5 simple

ways” to help end the stigmaaround mental illness.

“Bell Let’s Talk is very proud torenew our partnership withQueen’s and to support the contin-ued work of Dr. Stuart and her

Kingston City Council votedin favour of an agreement thatwill see Queen’s University andthe City of Kingston work to-gether to support innovation,economic development and theretention of more young peoplein the community.

Under the approved Memo-randum of Understanding(MOU), brought forward by

Principal Daniel Woolf andMayor Bryan Paterson, Queen’sand the city will collaborate andpool resources in pursuit of ashared innovation agenda.

“Both the City of Kingstonand Queen’s have a vested inter-est in enabling Kingston to at-tract businesses, investors,highly-skilled job-seekers, entre-preneurs and innovators, stu-dents and a diverse work force,”Principal Woolf said during the

council meeting at City Hall onTuesday, Jan. 24. “Together, wewill take action and encouragedialogue, partnerships and eco-nomic development initiativesthat build an innovative andprosperous city.”

Innovation is a focus atQueen’s with the aim of fosteringeconomic development througheducation, research, and com-mercialization. Creating a strate-gic partnership between the City

of Kingston and the universitywill help move the vision for-ward, Principal Woolf says.

In support of this Queen’s hasdeveloped a number of innova-tion and collaboration initiatives,including the Dunin-DeshpandeQueen’s Innovation Centre,SparQ Studios, the Queen’sStartup Summit, as well as theInnovation and Wellness Centre,which is currently under con-struction.

For Elorm Vowotor (Artsci’18)and Shanice Howard (Artsci’18),co-presidents of the African andCaribbean Students’ Association(ACSA) at Queen’s University,they look forward to a day whenhosting Black History Month isn’ta necessity, a day when black cul-ture, history and achievementsare fully integrated into the Cana-dian fabric, included in textbooksand accepted by all.

That day has yet to arrive, sothe work goes on.

On Sunday, Jan. 29, the mem-bers of ACSA and the Queen’sBlack Academic Society (QBAS)hosted an opening ceremony forBlack History Month at RobertSutherland Hall, bringing theQueen’s and Kingston communi-ties together for an evening ofperformances and guest speakers,including Nikki Clarke, presidentof the Ontario Black History Soci-ety.

The two have also played aleading role in organizing a seriesof events throughout February to

highlight black history as well asthe current experience, from cul-tural displays and dance work-shops to a panel discussion fea-turing a number of Queen’sacademics.

Another key aspect for theevents is strengthening the tiesbetween the Queen’s andKingston communities.

“What I’m really looking for-ward to is doing more Kingstoncommunity events because thereis a tendency for Queen’s studentsto just go to Black History Monthevents on campus,” says Ms.Howard. “For myself I’ve neverreally been involved in the com-munity activities but we weresure to include them in the calen-dar. It’s Black History Month andwe wanted it to have a widerreach.”

That reach begins with JudithBrown, a Queen’s alumni andpresident of Kingston’s Afro-Caribe Community Foundation.At the opening ceremony, Ms.Brown highlighted some local his-tory, including the fact that theevent was held in a buildingnamed after the first student and

graduate of colour at Queen’s andone of the university’s most im-portant early benefactors. RobertSutherland would also go on tobecome the first black lawyer inOntario.

Ms. Vowotor herself only re-cently learned about Sutherlandbut adds that it points to the con-tinuing lack of inclusion andawareness of the black commu-nity’s contributions. For both Ms.Vowotor, an international studentfrom Ghana, and Ms. Howard,who was born in Jamaica, it was avery clear omission.

“I am African and my historyand heritage is very, very impor-tant to me. Coming to Kingston

and Queen’s it was such a shockthat there wasn’t a lot of diver-sity,” Ms. Vowotor says. “So thisevent is very important because itgives us a chance to really showthat we are here, that we do exist,listen to us and hear our voices aswell. It gives us a chance to raiseawareness among the students ofQueen’s.”

Through the events they arehoping to expand the knowledgeof black history not only inKingston and at Queen’s butacross Ontario and Canada aswell by reaching students whowill take this knowledge back totheir hometowns.

Both say they are encouragedby the increasing diversity at theuniversity and by the increasingnumber of people attending theevents.

M/F?What is your gender?What can seem like such a sim-

ple question is, in reality, not sim-ple at all. That’s the message RuthWood and Erin LeBlanc, and oth-ers in the Queen’s trans commu-nity and the Equity and HumanRights Offices, want to spreadthrough the Queen’s communityand beyond.

“That’s the burning question.We stare at that box for a longtime,” says Erin, who is transgen-der and works at Smith School ofBusiness as director of strategicprogram development in the Of-fice of the Dean.

“It is a very difficult question,especially if you are in transitionphase,” echoes Ruth, who is alsotransgender and is a minister withthe United Church of Canada whonow works in the Office of theChaplain, where she providessupport specifically to the Queen’sLGBT+ community. “The questionof sex or gender causes a lot of un-necessary stress for those whoidentify outside of the gender bi-nary.”

Queen’s recently approved anew policy that suggests more in-clusive ways to collect informa-tion about sex and gender. Thepolicy advises anyone creating oradministering intake forms,record documents, and surveys toconsult a set of guidelines.

“The university strives to en-sure that members of our commu-nity don’t encounter discrimina-

tion or harassment related to gen-der identity or gender expres-sion,” says Irène Bujara, Univer-sity Adviser on Equity andHuman Rights. “This policy andthe guidelines will help staff, fac-ulty, and students develop inclu-sive and respectful information-gathering tools and processes.”

The guidelines encourage peo-ple to consider whether it is neces-sary to collect information concern-ing sex and gender in order toachieve their purpose and, if it isnot, to not collect it. If informationon sex or gender is required, theguidelines outline best practices toavoid misgendering people and for

ensuring that the language used isinclusive and free from bias.

RAISING AWARENESS

“Having this policy will raiseawareness and help those who de-sign forms at the university. Thequestion they are asking people toconsider is a very important one,and will help people become moreaware of the options available,”says Ruth.

“The policies are very comfort-ing to us,” says Erin, who madeher transition two years ago whileworking at Queen’s. “My transi-tion was smooth and there were alot of compassionate people who

helped me and genuinely cared.But that is not the norm. Outsideof Queen’s, most trans peoplehave a much harder time, and facebig challenges, including employ-ment.”

Erin says it is very common torun into many administrative hur-dles during transition, and eventhough she feels hers went well,she still encountered much ambi-guity along the way.

“All through your life and tran-sition, you are met with so many ‘Idon’t knows.’ The procedures arenot in place and people don’t knowhow to respond to all the questions– questions such as how to change

your name on your staff card, andyour Net ID, etc. It is death by athousand cuts and it’s very damag-ing to the psyche,” she says.

Ruth, who helped develop thepolicy with the Equity and Hu-man Rights Offices, says havingthe guidelines is especially impor-tant on campus. “Everything iscompounded when you’re a stu-dent. Transitioning is already sucha huge load, and particularly forstudents, it is important that wedo not add to that load.”

Work in this area continues atQueen’s. Related to this policy andguidelines are practices surround-ing preferred names and pro-nouns. Guiding work in this areais a desire to ensure that Queen’sUniversity is an inclusive and wel-coming community for all faculty,staff and students.

Policy information The Policy on Collecting Infor-

mation about Sex and Gender atQueen’s University, approved byQueen’s in September 2016, wasdeveloped to ensure that lan-guage used on intake forms,record documents, and surveys isinclusive and free from bias orbarriers related to sex/genderidentification. Under the policy,individuals creating and/or ad-ministering the above documentsare responsible for consulting theGuidelines on Collecting Informa-tion about Sex/Gender at Queen’sUniversity, which provide optionsand questions to consider whendeveloping the documents.

Faculty Board approves closure of Physical and Health Education programBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

A proposal to close the Bache-lor of Physical and Health Educa-tion (BPHE) program was ap-proved by the Arts and ScienceFaculty Board at its meeting onFriday, Jan. 27.

Admissions to the programwere temporarily suspended inMarch 2016 following a recom-mendation from the School of Ki-nesiology and Health Studies. Aproposal was then brought beforethe Faculty Board at its Oct. 28meeting.

“As I stated in the fall, recom-mending a program closure isnever easy. This is a program witha long history and proud alumni.We undertook a considerable con-sultation process involving stu-dents, faculty members, alumni,and others, and to consider themany factors involved in any deci

sion about the program’s status,”says Gordon E. Smith, InterimDean, Faculty of Arts and Science.“After the announcement for con-sideration of closure last fall at ourFaculty Board, we continued withadditional consultation – studentsand alumni expressed fond mem-ories of their time in Phys Ed atQueen’s while also demonstratingan understanding of the need forchange. At Faculty Board on Fri-day, students voiced excitementfor what is to come with new cur-riculum developments within theschool. I congratulate the Schoolof Kinesiology and Health Studies– students, faculty and adminis-tration – for working so collabora-tively on this over the pastmonths, and I look forward tocontinuing our work together.”

the recommended closure include:• The Physical Education and

Kinesiology programs at Queen’shave considerable overlap in cur-ricular content.

• Declining interest in physicaleducation programs throughoutCanada, including a 15 per centdecrease in applications atQueen’s over the past five years,combined with a 35 per cent in-crease in applications to kinesiol-ogy in the same time period.

• Fewer opportunities forphysical education teacherswithin the school system.

• A lack of potential facultymembers with doctoral degrees inphysical education and pedagogy.

“Today’s decision is the resultof almost two years of public con-sultation and of more than 10years of internal discussion

among faculty members in theSchool of Kinesiology and HealthStudies,” says Jean Côté, Director,School of Kinesiology and HealthStudies. “We are deeply commit-ted to all of our students, and willensure that this change does notimpact any current student inSKHS. All faculty members and

Reducing energy use an ongoing effortThe following article is the first in

a monthly series focused on the workby Queen’s and Physical Plant Serv-ices to reduce energy consumption bythe university.

Each year Queen’s Universityspends about $18 million to $20million on utilities, electricityprime among them.

Finding any way to reduce thefinal bill has a significant impact.Add to that the fact that most en-ergy saving measures also reducethe environmental impact of theuniversity, and it’s a win-win.

“Energy management has beena focus for Physical Plant Services(PPS) at Queen’s for more than 20years”, explains Nathan Splinter,Energy Manager.

However, with the cost of utili-ties climbing, there is more of anemphasis on the effort than ever.

Looking at it from an infra-structure angle, Queen’s is a mas-sive, multifaceted facility, stretch-ing over multiple campuses with amix of buildings from cutting-edge modern to classic Victorian.Not surprisingly, PPS has a widerange of projects on the go, but allsupport a common theme – reduc-ing the amount of energy thatQueen’s uses.

With new buildings this effortstarts at the planning stage, Mr.Splinter says.

“We’ve engrained energy man-agement into our building stan-dards,” he says. “Queen’s has a set

of building standards that incor-porate an energy focus and thathas enabled the establishment ofa good energy management refer-ence point for buildings. The re-sults can be seen in some of theuniversity’s recent buildings in-cluding the School of Kinesiologyand Health Sciences and GoodesHall, which achieved Leadershipin Energy and Engineering Design(LEED) recognition. The Inte-grated Learning Centre also re-ceived similar recognition withthe Building Research Establish-ment Environmental Assessment

Method (BREEAM) certification.These new buildings are at th

pinnacle of energy efficiencywhile some other existing build-ings require retrofitting.

A good example of this retrofitype of work occurred in Innova-tion Park recently. Mr. Splinterpoints out that $2.5 million wasinvested in upgrading the infra-structure of the sprawling build-ing, including replacing all thelighting and chillers, resulting inreduced energy consumption.

Lab ventilation was also im-proved by installing six high-

plume exhaust fans, replacing 80small independent stacks, result-ing in better air quality and en-ergy conservation.

Water consumption was an-other focus.

“We reduced the water con-sumption from and 100-150 cubicmeters a day to an average ofabout 5 cubic meters,” Mr. Splin-ter says. “This resulted in substantial cost savings for the facility.”

Each project requires a signifi-cant investment and the best technologies tend to be more expen-sive. However, by taking

advantage of available incentivesand grants the initial cost is re-duced. The savings on utilitycharges then pay for the initial ex-penditure in periods as short asfour or five years.

“An average lighting projectsees a 40 per cent to 60 per cent re-duction in the electrical demandwhich is phenomenal,” Mr. Splin-ter says. “That’s the rationale fordoing those type of projects. It’s apretty exciting time. There are alot of provincial grants to incen-tivize this type of work that wehave been successful in securing.”

To date Queen’s has receivedover $200,000 in grants to supportenergy conservation projects oncampus.

Looking ahead, PPS is plan-ning to introduce a new meteringsystem that will allow them andthe Queen’s community to moni-tor consumption for electricity,water, steam and natural gas inreal time, providing valuable dataimmediately rather than waitingfor the typical monthly reading.

“It’s essential to have enoughdata to do proper research andknow what’s happening withinour buildings,” Mr. Splinter says.“The metering project is really ex-citing and what we want to do aspart of the project is create a pub-lic-facing dashboard so people cango online and see what they arecurrently consuming for water orwhat they are using for electricity.”

The end result will hopefullybe greater awareness and knowl-edge about energy management,and that excites Mr. Splinter.

Energy managment at Queen’s has been an ongoing effort for more than 20 years. Currently, Energy Manager NathanSplinter is leading the effort to reduce energy comsumption at the university.

The power of compassion in mental healthAt the Bell Canada Mental Health

and Anti-Stigma Research Chair re-newal announcement Jan. 24, Char-lotte Johnston (Artsci’16), Director ofthe Peer Support Centre (PSC),shared her personal lived experiencewith mental health challenges. Thisviewpoint is an edited version ofthose remarks.

Mental health and mental ill-ness are so complex and affecteach of us in such different ways.Accessing support looks differentfor different people. That’s why itcan be incredibly isolating tostruggle in silence and not feellike you have a support network.

The most powerful lesson I’velearned from my own experiencesis how much listening and com-passion have power. I realizedthat talking about my own experi-ences can be meaningful for oth-ers and for me, too.

While I would argue my men-tal health story started as early aselementary school, I went throughone of the most difficult periodsin my third year here at Queen’s. Iwas known as the most positive,optimistic person at school, andon the outside, that didn’t reallychange all that much. But I didn’tfeel positive, optimistic, or hope-ful at all; I was stuck in a cycle of

stress and exhaustion and feelingcompletely worthless.

After the encouragement offriends who urged me to seeksupport, I realized I could eithercontinue to struggle in silence orthat I could go and talk to some-one about it. Luckily, a counsellorwas accessible through the PSC.It’s important to note that somany Canadians still don’t haveaccess to professional mentalhealth supports.

For all intents and purposes, itwas fairly easy for me to accessthis support.

The counsellor helped melearn the value of my worth andthe power of the traits that I nowmost value about myself: empa-thy and non-judgment. Eachstruggle is unique and you neverknow what someone is goingthrough.

My anxiety still challenges meevery day. It’s tough to reconcile,because continuing to workthrough my struggle has been themost incredible experience insome ways. It’s brought me intoamazing communities like thePeer Support Centre and Jack.org,and it’s also shaped my desire tobecome a social worker andsparked my passion for social jus-tice and equity.

Talking about my mentalhealth has given me more of asense of understanding of myselfand my ability to empathize,which defines me so much morethan the positivity and optimismthat I used to hide my other feel-ings.

I benefit constantly from thesupport of my peers, who lis-tened, made me feel validatedand important, and encouragedme to seek help. For people whoare wondering how they can helptheir peers, the “5 simple ways”developed by the incredible Dr.Heather Stuart through her re-search is a good example:

Language matters — Wordscan help, but they can also hurt.

Educate yourself — Take thetime to learn about mental healthand mental illness.

Be kind — Don’t dismiss: vali-date if friends are having a diffi-cult time. Saying “you need to re-lax” or telling someone that theywill “get over it” tells them thatyou think you know them betterthan they know themselves

Listen and ask — There’s somuch benefit to letting someoneknow you care about them, butmake sure you’re not assuminghow someone might be feeling

Talk about it — Talk about

some ways they can find support.Suggest gently, but never force anidea on someone. Let them knowthat you care about them and thatthey deserve any help or supportthey might be ready for

There are people who arelarger than life. Anthony ‘Tony’Geramita was one of them.

A professor, and the “socialglue,” in the Department ofMathematics and Statistics atQueen’s University for decades,Dr. Geramitapassed away onJune 22 atKingston Gen-eral Hospital af-ter a lengthybattle with can-cer. He was 73.

Born inBrooklyn, NY,Dr. Geramitacompleted his undergraduatestudies at City College in NewYork and then earned his Mas-ter’s and PhD from Syracuse Uni-versity. He would arrive atQueen’s in 1969 as an assistantprofessor and become a full pro-fessor in 1981. During his careerhe would also hold a professor-ship at the University of Genoa.

Dr. Geramita was a respectedmathematician and academic andhe had a great impact on thosewho knew him – students, col-leagues and friends.

Dr. Geramita was always look-ing to bring people together. In1990 he helped organize the Route81 conference that brought togetheralgebraists and algebraic geome-ters from Queen’s, Cornell Univer-sity and Syracuse University. Theconference continues today.

On a more personal level therewere the Curves Seminars Din-ners where once a week he andhis wife Joan, also a professor inthe Department of Mathematicsand Statistics, would open theirhouse to a troupe of mathemati-cians. The dinners brought to-gether graduate students andpost-docs to discuss the world,mathematical and actual, withpeople in all stages of career andfrom around the world.

“Tony’s Curve Seminar Dinnerswere a highlight for me both as a

graduate student and later as avisitor,” says former studentAdam Van Tuyl (McMaster). “Al-though I didn’t realize it at thetime, these dinners were quiteunique. The dinners provided agreat opportunity to meet and in-teract not only with my fellowgraduate students and the currentgroup of post-docs, but also to in-teract with a large number ofmathematicians in commutativealgebra and algebraic geometry.Not only were the dinners inform-ative, but they helped me – andTony’s other students – to startbuilding a network within thelarger mathematical community.They were also very entertaining,especially when Tony startedtelling many of his stories.”

As an adviser, Dr. Geramitaencouraged his students to be in-dependent, posing a question andthen providing plenty of space towork and explore on their own.He helped many students andyoung academics get published,

collaborating on papers through-out his career.

More than anything else itwas clear that he cared.

“Tony was a wonderful advi-sor, a great collaborator andfriend,” says former student TaiHua Ha (Tulane). “As an advisor,Tony understood his studentswell and knew exactly when topush and when to give us morespace and time. There were timeswhen I got stuck with my thesisproblem and thought of givingup. Tony encouraged me to work,but he gave me enough space tosort things out. When I gotaround and solved the problem,he was super happy — I knewthat he was very worried aboutme, but he let me decide my path,and I really appreciated that.”

He is deeply missed by his col-leagues at the Department ofMathematics and Statistics and atQueen’s. He helped keep thingstogether, offering a smile and alaugh.

“Tony was the ’social glue’ inthe algebra group,” says formerQueen’s colleague Morris Orzech.“He took an interest in everyone’svisitors. Even if he didn’t interactwith them mathematically hewould interact with them socially,and take charge of the social partof their visit. It is one reason wehad many visitors coming back.”

“Tony was always fun to bearound. A lot of the things he didwere hard work – organizingconferences, getting visitors,working on mathematics – but somany people were willing to do itwith Tony because with him itwas fun,” adds Grace Orzech.

Dr. Geramita is survived byhis wife Joan, daughtersKatharine and Nicole, son-in-lawMike Coury and grandchildrenSophia, Christopher, Isabella.

On a balmy spring evening, theIsabel Bader Centre for the Per-forming Arts came alive to thetimeless strains of 18th-centuryEuropean composers, and a muchmore recent suite by local com-poser John Palmer. The players,members of Orchestra Kingston

and the Kingston CommunityStrings, allowed their surround-ings to inspire them, and the audi-ence felt it. The spontaneousstanding ovation that erupted atthe end of the performance was,as one audience member put it,“well deserved and heartfelt.”

This magical moment was notjust a connection between per-former and audience, it was also aconnection between university

and community. And it would nothave been possible without theBallytobin Foundation.

A private foundation createdby Joan and the late Brian Tobin in1992 to support arts and culture inOntario, the Ballytobin Founda-tion found a new purpose whenThe Isabel opened in 2014. Thenewly-reimagined foundationnow makes it possible for localgroups to play at the lakeside con-cert hall by subsidizing a portionof their rental costs.

“Anyone who knows anythingabout the Kingston music and the-atre scene knows that the bestvenues are now at The Isabel,”says John Burge, Director of Musicat the Dan School of Drama andMusic and a composer whose ownworks have been featured on TheIsabel’s stage. “The grants fromthe Ballytobin Foundation meanlocal groups can perform in a hallthat has wonderful acoustics,great equipment, and where audi-ences love to come. It is a superb

opportunity.”“A performing arts centre has

its own soul, and this soul thriveswhen there is broad participationby artists and the community,”says Tricia Baldwin, The Isabel’sArtistic Director.

That broad participation hasincluded performances by theKingston Chamber Choir,Kingston Brassworks, and theKingston Community Orchestra,among others. In early November,17 local choirs and more than 800performers converged on The Is-abel for Choralpalooza. All ofthese concerts were made possibleby the Ballytobin Foundation, butDr. Burge believes they are just abeginning.

“Joan’s vision was very spe-cific, but also flexible enough thatas long as there is artistic value inwhat is being presented, and aslong as it is being driven by some-one in the community, it will getfunding,” he says. “New initia-tives and innovation and things

that are being tried for the firsttime will be looked at favourably,because that is what this kind offund should do.”

“She has nourished the virtu-ous circle of the artistic experiencethat gives so much to both per-formers and audiences,” Ms. Bald-win says.

That circle has been good forboth Queen’s and the city it callshome.

“Joan saw the concert hall asan opportunity to be larger thanjust a university-focused venue,”says Dr. Burge. “She understoodthat the arts is a great medium forbreaking down barriers. Bringingcommunity groups into what is, ina sense, a university building re-ally helps to connect the univer-sity with the Kingston community.Borders never matter when you’retalking about the arts.”

Applications are open for theInternational Visitors Program ofthe Principal’s DevelopmentFund, a program that helps con-nect Queen’s with academics andinstitutions around the world bysponsoring visits by internationalscholars. The program also worksto foster connections betweenQueen’s and its partners withinthe Matariki Network of Universi-ties.

“This program provides atremendous opportunity for col-

laboration and cross-pollination ofideas between the Queen’s com-munity and scholars and universi-ties around the globe,” saysDaniel Woolf, Principal and Vice-Chancellor. “I am very pleased tooffer this funding as part of ourongoing support for internationalpartnerships and, in particular, al-liances with the Matariki Net-work.”

The International Visitors Pro-gram includes three applicationcategories, each of which offersgrants of up to $3,000. Categoryone is the open program, which

helps to cover the costs of bring-ing an international scholar toQueen’s for a period of at leastthree days.

The other two application cate-gories focus on leveragingQueen’s membership in theMatariki Network of Universities.One of these is an extension of thevisiting scholars program, specifi-cally aimed at bringing visitors toQueen’s from the other Matarikiuniversities, which include theUniversity of Western Australia(UWA), Tübingen University, Up-psala University, Dartmouth Col-

lege, University of Otago, andDurham University.

Last year, Professor KarolMiller from UWA visited Queen’sthrough the program and gave atalk about his research into com-putational biomechanics at theSchool of Computing Distin-guished Speaker Seminar.

The third application categoryprovides funding to assistQueen’s faculty and staff totravel to Matariki partner institu-tions to build new collaborations.This seed funding may be usedto initiate new academic, re-

search, or administrative initia-tives.

Peer programs are a key part ofthe student support network atQueen’s and to highlight the workbeing done, as well as recruit newvolunteers, the Division of Stu-dent Affairs hosted the first PeerWeek.

A full schedule of events washeld Jan. 23-27, from informationbooths and a presentation byChancellor Jim Leech on the im-portance of mentorship for men-tal health to a recruitment infor-mation session and a lunchtimebowl of soup.

Peer programs at Queen’s pro-vide support for all undergradu-ate and graduate students, cover-ing a range of areas such aswellness, mentorship and aca-demic success.

“Peer Week is about raisingawareness of current program-ming on campus, recruiting newvolunteers and thanking our cur-rent volunteers for the manyhours they dedicate to supportingtheir peers,” says Cassandra deBartok, Mentor Program Coordi-nator. “There are a number ofbenefits to having a peer supportnetwork on campus. Student Af-fairs takes a holistic approach tostudent success at Queen’s andeach peer program plays a differ-ent, and important, role in sup-porting students while they’rehere.”

The volunteer positions alsoprovide meaningful and relevantexperience, skill development,and excellent training for those

taking part in the programs.“A network of support allows

professional staff to coordinate re-cruitment, training, programmingand promotional efforts. Over thenext few months we will be devel-oping core competencies for ourvolunteers to develop duringtheir time with each program.This allows our volunteers tochoose positions not only basedon professional area of interestbut also based on the skill set theymight like to develop,” Ms. DeBartok says. “For our volunteers,

a network of peer support meansknowing that they are backed intheir roles both by staff and byother volunteers across programs.They are able to see that they arepart of something bigger than justtheir own program and it givesthem opportunities to network.”

port first-year Aboriginal studentsto encourage spiritual, mental,physical and emotional supportduring their first transition year.

• COR Volunteers providehands-on care to intoxicated stu-dents at the Campus ObservationRoom (COR), an on-campusdetox center. COR volunteers alsodo campus-wide outreach.

• Leave the Pack Behind vol-unteers and paid student staffhelp support smoking cessationthrough campus outreach, socialmedia and collaboration withother schools across Ontario.

Research determines how the brain recognizes what’s important at first glanceBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

Researchers at the Centre forNeuroscience Studies (CNS) atQueen’s University have discov-ered that a region of the brain –the superior colliculus – contains amechanism responsible for inter-preting how visual input from ascene determines where we look.This mechanism, known as a vi-sual salience map, allows thebrain to quickly identify and acton the most important informa-tion in the visual field, and is a ba-sic mechanism for our everydayvision.

The study, published today inthe journal Nature Communications,found that neurons in this regionof the brain create a visualsaliency map (a representation, ordistilled version, of the scene thathighlights the most visually con-spicuous objects), which corre-lated with established computermodels of saliency. The researchopens up new opportunities in awide range of fields includingneuroscience, psychology, visualrobotics, and advertising, as wellas applications for diagnosingneurological disorders.

“When we look out at theworld, the first things that attractour gaze are the low-level visualfeatures that comprise a scene –the contours, the colours, the lu-minance of the scene – and com-putational models of visualsaliency are designed to predictwhere we will look based on thesefeatures,” explains Brian White, apostdoctoral researcher at theCNS and the study’s lead author.“Our colleagues at the Universityof Southern California – led byProfessor Laurent Itti – are at theforefront in the development of

these models. With our neuro-physiological expertise, weshowed that neurons in the supe-rior colliculus create a saliencymap that guides attention, inmuch the same way as predictedby the saliency model. Until now,this was largely just a conceptwith little supporting evidence,but our latest study provides thefirst strong neural evidence for it.”

Dr. White and his co-investiga-tors, including fellow Queen’s re-searcher Douglas Munoz, meas-ured how the activation ofneurons in this area of the brainrespond to natural visual stimuli,such as video of dynamic naturescenes. The research team found astrong correlation between themodel’s predictions of visualsaliency across the scene, and thepatterns of activation by theseneurons – demonstrating not onlythe validity of the model in pre-dicting visual saliency and atten-tion, but opening new possibilitiesin a range of fields.

Dr. White says the findingshave important applications in thedevelopment of diagnostic testsfor neurological disorders – suchas Parkinson’s disease, Hunting-ton’s disease and Alzheimer’s dis-ease. Patients with such disordersshow patterns of gaze that differfrom controls when viewing natu-ral scenes. These differences canbe distinguished using thesaliency model, and can then beused to help understand what thedifferent brains are doing basedon the neurophysiological results.

“While a number of fields canbenefit from an improved under-standing of saliency coding in thebrain, the real benefit is the oppor-tunity for further study on the su-perior colliculus and how it inte-grates inputs from other brainareas,” Dr. White says. “We’revery interested in furthering boththe clinical and diagnostic benefitsthat can be derived from thesefindings, as well as the opportu-nity for further basic research.”

Enhancing health carefor Indigenous patientswith diabetesBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

In Canada, rates of Type 2 dia-betes are three to five per centhigher in Indigenous peopleswhen compared to non-Indige-nous peoples. Not only this, butIndigenous Canadians typicallyhave poorer health outcomes dur-ing treatment of diabetes.

Queen’s family medicine pro-fessor Dr. Michael Green has co-authored a study with colleaguesfrom the Northern Ontario Schoolof Medicine, the University of Cal-gary, and the University of BritishColumbia on the healthcare expe-riences of Indigenous patientswith diabetes. The study foundthat many patients experiencedculturally unsafe care – a factorthat may contribute to poorerhealth outcomes.

“Many of the participants inour study reported that negativeexperiences with the health caresystem made them reluctant toseek the care they needed or towant to actively engage in the careof their diabetes,” says Dr. Green.

Participants in the study re-ported issues with the health-caresystem including having thehealth system experience triggertraumatic childhood memories atresidential schools, interactionsthat patients felt were racially mo-tivated, limited access to care dueto physician shortages and geo-graphic isolation, and negative in-teractions with health-care profes-sionals.

This study also found thatmany Indigenous patientsavoided or disengaged from theirdiabetes care because of negativeexperiences such as derogatory or

judgmental comments by health-care providers, or visual triggersin health-care settings

The research showed health-care relationships can be repairedwhen health care providersdemonstrate empathy, humility,and patience.

“We also learned important les-sons directly from Indigenous pa-tients about what health careproviders and health systems cando to help build positive relation-ships and what they need to learnto provide care that is both effectiveand culturally safe,” says Dr. Green.

The research suggests a two-pronged approach to improvinghealth care for Indigenous peo-ples. First, the study recom-mended a stronger focus on cul-tural safety training andantiracism education for health-care workers including a strongeremphasis on relationship develop-ment and advocacy.

Second, the study recommendsenhancing patient-centered ap-proaches to care to respond to thecultural and social needs of In-digenous patients.

The study was published in theCanadian Medical AssociationJournal.

At Queen’s there are many ex-ceptional students, and amongthose leading the way are the Lo-ran Scholars.

On Tuesday, Jan. 10, studentsattending Queen’s with the sup-port of the Loran Scholars Foun-dation were recognized in a spe-cial event held at the UniversityClub.

A total of 30 students are se-lected nationwide each year to re-ceive the multi-year scholarship.Currently, Queen’s currently has20 Loran scholars studying inArts and Science, Commerce andEngineering.

The Loran scholars develop anongoing connection with the Lo-ran Scholars Foundation, the uni-versity and each other, says RaineStorey (Artsci’17), who is in her fi-nal year of the Bachelor of FineArts program.

Receiving the scholarship al-lowed her to pursue her passion,she explains, while at the sametime receiving support from men-tors and her fellow scholarswithin the Loran network.

“Honestly, (the scholarship)has meant everything to me,” shesays. “I might not have been ableto come to university if it wasn’tfor this opportunity, not just thefunding but also for the hope thatI could be an artist. Now with thesupport of the foundation andpeers, I have the background todo the research to strengthen my

work, and have more of a mean-ing and more of a message toshow to people through art.”

More than 4,400 students ap-ply each year; scholars are se-lected based on a mix of aca-demic achievement,extracurricular activity and lead-ership.

“What we focus on is potentialthat is based on character,” saysFranca Gucciardi, the founda-tion’s executive director and CEOand a scholar herself. “We believe

that if we invest in those charac-ter traits and provide the oppor-tunities for (each scholar’s) poten-tial to be realized, then we are allgoing to be better off because ourfocus is not really on finding starsbut in developing leaders of char-acter for the future.”

The program provides stu-dents with a tuition scholarshipand a living stipend. Loran schol-ars also receive personal and pro-fessional development opportuni-ties, participating in

enterprise-related summer em-ployment, a professional devel-opment experience (often an in-ternational volunteer experience)and an opportunity in a publicpolicy environment. The programconnects students with a mentor– individuals who are influentialin communities, government orvarious disciplines – for the dura-tion of their undergraduate stud-ies.

The Queen’s United Way cam-paign has topped its target, col-lecting $327,797 for the annualfundraising drive.

The initial goal was $310,000.The overall campaign in sup-

port of the United Way ofKingston, Frontenac, Lennox andAddington raised a record$3,702,100, exceeding its goal of$3,451,000.

“The Queen’s campaign is thesingle largest workplace cam-paign in the region,” says Bha-vana Varma, president and CEOof the United Way KFLA. “It is acritical part of the annual cam-paign, raising funds that supportthousands of people in theKingston area. Thank you to all –faculty, staff, retirees, students –who give so generously to helpvulnerable people.”

The campaign raises funds to

help the United Way supportmore than 57 programs deliveredby 40 agencies that serve approxi-mately 75,000 people in the King-ton area.

“The Queen’s United Waycampaign supports a diversegroup of people in our universitycommunity as well as the sur-rounding area,” says PattyMcHenry, co-chair for the Queen’scommittee. “Staff, faculty, andstudents have access to so manyresources. This campaign wassuccessful only due to the amaz-ing volunteer work by so many.We cannot thank all who sup-ported, volunteered and cheeredthe campaign on.”

Queen’s community memberswere able to support the UnitedWay through a number of waysincluding payroll deduction, on-line pledge, one-time gifts, or tak-ing part in one of the manyfundraising events held aroundcampus such as the barbeque or-

ganized by the Alma Mater Soci-ety (AMS) outside Stauffer Li-brary. Overall, students con-tributed more than $4,700 to theUnited Way campaign.

Support at Queen’s came inmany forms like Financial Serv-ices which raised funds throughBlue Jean Fridays and donated

socks, hats and mitts to HomeBase Housing, a not-for-profit or-ganization that provides a rangeof safe, affordable housing, emer-gency shelters and support serv-ices to meet the needs of youth,adults and families at risk ofhomelessness in the Kingstonarea.

A working group is currentlyexamining possible solutions toimprove access to data across theuniversity.

Benoit-Antoine Bacon, Provostand Vice-Principal (Academic),and Donna Janiec, Vice-Principal(Finance and Administration),have asked the working group tolook at the administrative systemreporting requirements collec-tively (HR, Student, Finance,Budget and Planning) and de-velop a business case for a new in-tegrated reporting solution.

“Easy access to integrated dataleads to improved decision-mak-ing and better strategic planningacross the university,” Provost Ba-con says. “Currently, the ease ofaccessing data varies across sec-tors and, as such, we have made ita priority to enhance our report-ing capabilities.”

The University Reporting Strat-egy working group includes lead-ership from Human Resources,University Registrar, Planningand Budget, Information Technol-ogy Services, and Financial Serv-ices. The working group will de-velop a business case that:

• Identifies the reporting capa-bility of current university admin-istrative systems.

• Determines the reporting re-quirements across the university.

• Recommends an integratedreporting tool that best meets theneeds of the entire university.

“We are pleased with the col-laborative effort to enhance re-porting and data access,” Ms.Janiec says. “We are confident thatconsistency in a reporting toolthat meets user needs will im-prove service levels and create ef-ficiencies.”

The working group will gatherfeedback from stakeholders whorely on access to university data,including business officers, staffingofficers, and other key positions.Financial Services will distribute asurvey to stakeholders, whileBudgeting and Planning will con-duct focus groups with representa-tives from shared service units andfaculties. Human Resources andUniversity Registrar have alreadyexplored potential reporting op-tions, and they will share with theworking group the informationthey gathered during that process.

Gaels fall to Paladins in Carr-Harris CupBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

The No. 7 Queen's Gaels men’shockey team (17-6-2) fell 3-2 to theRMC Paladins (5-18-2) in the 31stCarr-Harris Cup on Thursday,Feb. 2, with 3,042 fans filling theseats at the Rogers K-Rock Centre.

The Gaels were missing fourkey players and head coach BrettGibson who are all with TeamCanada at the FISU Universiade inKazakhstan.

The Paladins took a 3-0 leadearly in the third period and thenheld off the Gaels who battled backwith a pair of goals from DarcyGreenaway and Dylan Anderson.

With less than a minute left inthe period, the Gaels pulled theirgoalie. In spite of several closechances, Queen’s was unable toscore again, allowing the Paladinsto take a 3-2 final.

“They got to the dirty areas,they scored the goals that theyneeded to score,” says interimhead coach Tony Cimellaro.“That’s something we’ve been

harping on our guys all weeklong, we are going to struggle toscore goals and we need to do theright things to score. Our execu-tion was terrible, and has beensince the four players have beengone. No excuse for how weplayed tonight.”

Seamus Maguire, DericBoudreau and Mitchell Hewsonscored for the Paladins.

The Gaels were without goalieKevin Bailie along with defence-man Spencer Abraham and for-wards Eric Ming and SlaterDoggett.

The Carr-Harris Challenge Cuwas initiated in 1986 by the Inter-national Hockey Hall of Fame incelebration of the oldest rivalry inhockey, now at 131 years.

Bayés’ syndrome refers to the as-sociation between interatrial blockand supraventricular arrhythmias —mainly the occurrence of atrial fibril-lation. It is also a risk factor for car-dio-embolic stroke. Rapid recogni-tion by analyzing characteristicpatterns in the surface ECG will helpthe physician to closely monitor thepatient for atrial fibrillation and de-cide on anticoagulation therapy ifthe clinical risk of stroke is in-creased.

Interatrial blocks were describedseveral decades ago; however, theyare now gaining the attention ofthe medical community as a meansof helping to identify patients athigh risk of developing atrial fibrilla-tion and/or cardio-embolic stroke.
