The process of releasing energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen.

Occurs in the cell and involves the mitochondria

Review

When we eat food _____mers that are digested into smaller ____________.The monomers are diffused through out the body to be used where needed or stored.

We digest food and release its energy at our mitochondria. That process uses glucose we ate and oxygen that we inhaled and makes CO2 and H2O that we exhale as waste.

As CO2 builds up what process causes • CO2 to leave our cells

• go to our blood

• leave our blood & go into our lungs where it is exhaled?

Cellular respiration uses oxygen that we inhaled that thendiffuses ATP throughout the body to the cells. The CO2

waste diffuses out of the body via the lungs

Cellular (in cell ) Respiration (with oxygen)

Plant & animal cells use sugar & oxygen to release energy.

Cellular Respiration happens at the cell’s mitochondrion.

The mitochondria put together the reactants, oxygen & sugar,

and make the products carbon dioxide, water, and energy (ATP).

Reactants are substances that make new products when put together.

Products are what is made when reactants react.

1.Aerobic respiration uses oxygen-releases energy, carbon dioxide, and water. (what you are doing right now!)

2.Anaerobic respiration occurs when oxygen is NOT present this is referred to as fermentation(when you can’t catch your breath)

2 Types of fermentation1. Lactic acid formation- damages muscles2. fermentation – yeast forms alcohol

2 Categories of cellular respiration
