• Storing Energy– Who here has gone to the bank with their

parents?– At bank have your parents deposited money or

withdraw money from the bank?– Cell are similar to banks, in that they can “deposit”

carbohydrates and can “withdraw” these carbohydrates when they need energy.

• Where do plants get their glucose?• Where do animals get the majority of their

glucose from?

Cellular Respiration in Animals

• Unlike plants, animals must gain their glucose from another source. In most cases humans will get their glucose from plants and parts of the plants (fruits, grains, etc…)

• Animals consume carbohydrates, from their food, which are then converted into glucose.

• Once animals have glucose in their cells, this glucose can be broken down in order to release energy through the process of cellular respiration

• Respiration: during this process cells break down simple food molecules, such as glucose, and release the energy they contain.

• Respiration sometimes refers to the idea of breathing, or the movement of air in and out of your lungs

• This leads to the respiration occurring in cells to be referred to as cellular respiration

• There is a link between these terms as when you breath, your body takes in oxygen. Oxygen is necessary for cellular respiration to occur in most cells
