Cellular Respiration in Detail

Glycolysis is needed for cellular respiration.Glycolysis takes place in the cell’s cytoplasm• The products of glycolysis enter cellular respiration when

oxygen is available.– two ATP molecules are used to split glucose– four ATP molecules are produced (net gain of 2!!)– two molecules of NADH produced– two molecules of pyruvate produced

Cellular Respiration in Detail

Glycolysis is needed for cellular respiration.

• The products of glycolysis enter cellular respiration when oxygen is available.– The electrons from glucose are stored in NADH– ATP can be used as immediate energy

Cellular Respiration in Detail

The Krebs cycle is the first main part of cellular respiration. The Krebs cycle takes place inside the mitochondria• Pyruvate is broken down

in the cytoplasm before the Krebs cycle.– Pyruvate is broken down

into Acetyl CoA- carbon dioxide released

– NADH produced– coenzyme A (CoA) bonds

to two-carbon molecule to an molecule in the Krebs cycle

- The Krebs cycle begins

Cellular Respiration in Detail

• The Krebs cycle produces energy-carrying molecules.

Cellular Respiration in Detail

– After acetyl coA joins with the krebs cycle the cycle begins

– Citric acids is formed next– Electrons from citric acid

are stripped and stored on NADH and CO2 is released

– More electrons are stripped off and stored on NADH

– ADP is converted to ATP and more CO2 is released

– Once again, electrons are stripped off but this time they are stored on both NADH and FADH

• The Krebs cycle produces energy-carrying molecules.

Summary: –Each pyruvate produces–3 CO2 (one when it’s converted to acetyl coA before krebs)–4 NADH (one when it’s converted to acetyl coA before krebs)–1 FADH–1 ATP

*******remember glucose produces 2 pyruvate, so all of the above totals are multiplied by 2********

• The Krebs cycle produces energy-carrying molecules.

The electron transport chain is the second main part of cellular respiration.

• The electron transport chain uses NADH and FADH2 to

make ATP.

Cellular Respiration in Detail

• The breakdown of one glucose molecule produces up to38 molecules of ATP.

– ATP synthase produces ATP

– oxygen picks up electrons and hydrogen ions

– water is released as a waste product

The electron transport chain is the second main part of cellular respiration.

• The electron transport chain uses NADH and FADH2 to

make ATP.
