CenteronLiteracyandDeafnessisdevelopinganumberofinterventionsfordeafandhardofhearingchildren.Weareinvitingyoutoparticipateinastudyabouttheefficacyofanearlyliteracyinterventionforprekindergarten‐kindergartenchildren.FoundationsforLiteracyisanearlyliteracyinterventionthatwasdevelopedspecificallyfordeafandhard‐of‐hearingyoungchildren.Foundationsistaughtanhouradayfourorfivedaysaweekfortheschoolyear.Targetedlearningobjectivesincludevocabulary,narrativeskills,alphabeticknowledge,phonologicalawareness,andreadingdecodablewordsandshortconnectedtext.Foundationsusesfun,age‐appropriate,integratedactivities.Eachlessonincludesstrategiesfordifferentiatinginstructionbasedonchildren’sspeechperceptionandlanguageabilities.Ourresearchsuggeststhatchildrenmakeeducationallymeaningfulgainsinallareastaught.TeachersinGeorgiahavetaughtFoundationstoover100DHHchildren,andtheymadesignificantlylargergainsonphonologicalawareness,alphabeticknowledge,vocabulary,andstorycomprehensionthanchildrenincomparisongroups.Children’sstandardscoresinvocabulary,phonologicalawareness,andalphabeticknowledgeincreasedonaverage9to10points.WearenowbeingfundedbytheInstituteofEducationSciencestoshowstrongerevidenceoftheefficacyofthisinterventionbyimplementingarandomizedcontrolledtrialstudy.Weareinvitingyourschoolandteacherstobepartofthisnationalstudy.Ifyouagreetoparticipate,theclassesinyourschoolthatfitinclusioncriteriawillberandomlyassignedtoeithertheexperimentalgrouporthecomparisongroup.Wewillprovideatwo‐dayprofessionaldevelopmentworkshop,accesstoaprofessionaldevelopmentwebsite,acurriculumguide,andallcurriculamaterialstoallteachers.TeachersintheexperimentalgroupwillimplementFoundationsforLiteracyduringthe2016‐2017schoolyear,whileteachersinthecontrolgroupwillreceivethematerialsthefollowingyear.Wewillalsoprovideastipendtoparticipatingteachers.FoundationsforLiteracywillbeavailableforpurchasebythegeneralpublicafterthestudyiscomplete.Formoreinformation,contactDr.AmyLederberg([email protected]),Dr.SusanEasterbrooks([email protected])orDr.EricaPayne([email protected]).
