WSQ MEETINGS ARE AT

1 PM & 7 PM

Hi Everyone, I wanted to say a quick thanks to all our contributors for door prizes, and to the gals who got up and helped with hostessing. We had 3 groups selling raffle tickets at the day meeting, and only one at the evening meeting. If you think that is too many, please let me know because I'm trying to ac-commodate as many small groups as possible. We had a stellar attendance, from members and guests. Hope we can keep it up. I read all the comments on your slips and have passed on pertinent info to the folks in the know. Thanks to all of you for stepping up and volunteering to help with the hostessing. It's a big job, and

I appreciate all the assistance.

CONTENTS

September and October are my two fa-vorite months of the year. I love the cooler temperatures after the blazing heat of summer. The color of the light changes and softens. The sun is still shining and beckoning us out to explore. And the very best of all, the colors of autumn! Mother Nature shows us how color is done a big scale and it is breath-taking!

September 2018 President’s Message

We are working on changes to WSQ as well. We will be starting our Volunteer Profile program and have hopes that each of you will find a way to participate in any of our many activities. I loved seeing the new ribbon badges that the Board members were wearing at the July meeting. You could certainly pick them out from across the room. I hope that you had a chance to speak to some of the Board members, several of you spoke to me and I certainly appreciated it. Our speaker, Kimberly, was quite delightful. I wish more of you had chosen to come to dinner with us and get to know her a little bit better. The Board always takes the Speaker out to dinner between meetings and the members are always wel-come to come. We usually go to a restaurant close to CenterPlace for about an hour at 4:00 so that we can be back in time to get ready for the evening meeting. We would love to have you join us. I hope you will.

Thank you for the answers to our questions on the door prize slips. We got about 300 responses to our questions and now have more information on what the Membership would like. That number of responses gives us a better base to make more informed decisions. We still will not be able to please everyone. A total of 190 people said they would like to receive emails about outside sales, quilting events and WSQ volunteer opportunities, 76 said they would not. 90 people said that were interested in volunteering and 15 said they were not. 100 people said they get their newsletter by mail and 160 said they get it online. I was more interested in the question of do you read it than if you receive it. Do you read it?

President’s Message for September 2018

(Continued from Page 3) We also got a request in the Suggestion Box to bring back more of the round tables to sit at and to have re-freshments served. We decided to eliminate most of the round tables because there was not enough room for everyone attending the meeting to have a seat. The rows of chairs give us enough seating. We also have ex-plored the cost of having refreshments. Centerplace requires us to use their caterer if we want food; we can-not bring in outside food. The cost for coffee alone for our meetings is $800. That would be just coffee, not cookies or anything to eat. The Board decided that was an expense we could do without. Another reason to join us for dinner! Our Board meetings are always open to any members that would like to attend. They usually take place six weeks before the Membership meeting as it takes that long to get the Newsletter put together, printed, and mailed. The dates for future Board meetings are listed on the calendar page of the website (wsqspokane.org). This is where we explore new ideas. We discuss many things that never make it out of committee. Other ideas may go farther but then get discarded for one reason or another. Just because the Board talked about something, does not mean that it will be implemented. We offer each other ideas and possible solutions to stumbling blocks each committee has come upon. The Board is the place each committee comes for help in trying to figure out how to get from here to there. We follow the By Laws and the Standing Rules (both of which are available on the website) to keep our policies consistent. Our next Board meeting will take place on December 12 at 6:00 at Centerplace. This is the meeting where we discuss and vote on the budget. This is also the changeover meeting. The old Board is the one that votes on the Budget, but the new Board gets to see how things are done and ask questions. There will be an extra Board meeting on January 9, 2019 for the new Board to discuss what needs to be done for the January Membership meeting. I would encourage anyone that is interested to come to a Board meeting. New ideas are always welcome and if you have something you would like to present to the Board, we would be happy to put you on the agenda. Visitors are welcome to the discussion but only Board members can make, second, and vote on motions.

We will be having a ballot vote at the September meeting to elect the President for next year. It is such a lux-ury to have two people interested in this position. Paper ballots will be available at check in and will be col-lected after the business meeting. You must attend one of the September meetings to be eligible to vote; there are no absentee ballots. Please take this procedure seriously and vote for the candidate of your choice. All the votes will be tallied and the winner will be announced at the evening meeting. The results will also be announced on the website, on our Facebook page, and in the January newsletter. Thank you for your help in making WSQ the best it can be. We need you. I hope that you enjoy this very busy season and the changes it brings. I will see you at the Quilt Show!

Meeting Minutes Membership Meeting July 26, 2018

July 26, 2018 Quarterly Membership Meeting Minutes Washington State Quilters- Spokane Chapter, PO Box 7117, Spokane, WA 99207

MEETING LOCATION: CenterPlace- 2426 N. Discovery Place- Spokane Valley, WA 99216 BUSINESS MEETING CALLED TO ORDER: 1:00pm by Inter im President Kathleen Woods. Announcements: Inter im President Kathleen Woods introduced the Executive Board: 1st VP- Paula Ferry; 2nd VP- Karen Mathison; Treasurer- Robin Waggoner; Secretary- Sandy Haase; Parliamentarian- Edie Milanovich. Sandy Haase will be step-ping down as Secretary after the July evening meeting. Darleene Boller has agreed to take over Secretary duties until the new Secretary takes over in 2019. The location of committee tables was pointed out as well as the location of the Guest Raffle Quilts from INMQ and Colville Piecemakers. Various committees have tables set up for signing up to volunteer at the Quilt Show. Minutes--A motion was made by Barb Lambrecht to approve the January Quarterly Membership Minutes as published in the newsletter and seconded by Betty Franzetti. The motion was approved unanimously subject to final approval at the evening meeting. Volunteer of the Quarter --Carolyn Kruger is named as Volunteer of the Quarter. Carolyn has recently served as both Mem-bership Chairman and Merchant Mall Chairman for the Quilt Show. In the past, Carolyn has been Quilt Show Chairman, Speakers Chairman, and WSQ President. A heart in hand pin and certificate is awarded as a token of appreciation. Nominations for future Volunteer of the Quarter are requested. Nominations may be placed in the Suggestion Box or forward a note to the President listing the nominee’s name and volunteer contributions. Additional Announcements—Interim President Kathleen Woods asked that the membership fill out door prize slips and ex-plained the importance of this information. Using the door prize slips in this way allows the Board to poll the membership on various issues. The questions on the slips at this meeting concern the newsletter and receiving informational emails from WSQ. At the last meeting, the door prize slips concerned changing the time of the evening meeting. Although 400 door prize slips were distributed at the April meeting, only 60 were returned. A decision was made based upon that sample. The WSQ evening meeting time will be changed from 7:00pm to 6:00pm beginning in January 2019. Chronic lack of volunteer participation was addressed by Interim President Kathleen Woods. Each committee chairman is asked to recruit and engage volunteers. Each committee is asked to have a presence at every General meeting and Board meet-ing. Joan Halverson, Volunteer Coordinator, will be passing out a questionnaire at the September General Meeting. These will ask about experience and availability for volunteering. This information will be available to both Board members and Quilt Show Committee members who may need to fill their rosters. It is asked to complete the form. The goal is to reach all mem-bers, and those on the roster who do not complete the form will receive a phone call to be sure they have not been missed. Committee Positions/Vacancies---The following committees need chairmen for 2019: Fundraising, Historian, Newsletter, and Small Groups. OFFICER REPORTS 1st Vice President—Paula Ferry—Paula advised that classes with today’s speaker, Kimberly Einmo, are filled. September’s speaker will be Becky Goldsmith, with Piece O’Cake Designs. Space is available in both classes. Friday 9/28 the class will be ‘Tile Tango’, with a focus on invisible applique; inner and outer curves. On Saturday 9/29, the class is ‘Bullseye Quilts’ using foundation paper piecing. The speaker for January 2019 is Kathy McNeil. Friday’s class is ‘New Beginnings’ using the Apliquick method of turning edg-es. The background is hand applique; however, other methods of applique can be used. Saturday’s class is a one-day workshop with a choice of 3 patterns: ‘Octopus Garden’, ‘Otter Friends’, or ‘Sea Turtle’. This class also teaches the Apliquick method, but any other method can be used. Laura Fogg will be the speaker for April 2019. She will be teaching a 2-day workshop on landscape collage. 2nd Vice President—Karen Mathison—This will be the 40th Anniversary of the WSQ Quilt Show. Karen asks that volunteers sign up at the various tables set up. Hostess Chairman, Sandy Haase, has resigned for family reasons. Hostesses are an integral party of the show, and one or two volunteers are needed to fill this vacancy. Quilt entries are currently at 205, which is close to the number registered in 2017 at this time. 32 are in the Anniversary catego-ry. Please consider using online registration if possible as this saves entry work for the registration team. About 62% of regis-trations have been online. The deadline for registration is August 12. Challenge packets are still available from Naomi Hall. The next Quilt Show meeting will be August 13 at CenterPlace. All members are welcome. Treasurer—Robin Waggoner—Balances are as follows: Checking: $103,889.81; Capital Account: $4,466.99; CD’s: $54,962.06; Total Cash Position: $162,008.86. Current cash balance includes Quilt Show vendor receipts that have come in, and expenditures are upcoming. Approximately $80k is needed for Quilt Show expenses. A profit of $3-5k is made from the Quilt Show each year and is used for operating expenses. WSQ operates as a non-profit and its function is to provide a service to the community. There is no charge for park-ing at the show, as this is paid by WSQ.

Bullseye Quilts Saturday 9–4 $65

Learn the secrets of foundation paper-piecing and set-in circles! You will find that this 20" block is a whole lot easier to construct than you thought it would be. Each ring is made up of foundation paper-pieced sections that are sewn together into complete rings. The rings are set together as they are completed. Choose fabrics and colors for your own block to set the mood you want, either vintage OR modern. All skill levels welcome.

Tile Tango—Friday 9-4 $65 This needle turn hand applique class focuses on the invisible applique stitch, outer points, and inner and outer curves. Each 8" x 8" block holds one flower. Four 8" blocks are sewn together make the larger 16" block. You will work on one 8” block in class. The block pattern (from the book, The Quilter's Practical Guide To Color) is provided in class. All skill levels welcome

Becky Goldsmith is an award-winning quilter who

travels to teach quilting both nationally and interna-

tionally. Her classes are always interesting and in-

formative, with an emphasis on teaching techniques

that help you improve your sewing skills without

making you crazy.

Becky started Piece O' Cake Designs with Linda

Jenkins in 1994. They published more than 30

books and hundreds of patterns, including 7 Blocks

of the Month. Linda retired in 2014 and Becky has

continued writing books and patterns.

Making quilts is interesting, fulfilling, and challeng-

ing—and being a member of the quilting community

is an added bonus. Becky never imagined that be-

ing a quilter would become her life’s work, but she’s

so happy that it did!

1pm Lecture “A Piece O’ Cake Life” 7pm Lecture “A Practical Approach to Color”

We are privileged to have Becky deliver two different lectures! Attend both meetings if you can!

Executive Committee Nominations for 2019

Candidates running for the 2019 Executive Board.

President - Kathy Woods Kathleen Woods is the current Interim President. She previously served as President in 2012 and 2013. She has served on the Quilt Show Committee in many capacities including Chairman in 2009 and 2010. She was also the Speakers Chairman in 2011. Kathy and her husband moved to Spokane in 2005 after a 23 year stint as an Army Wife, the toughest job in the Army! She has a longarm quilting business, Still Quilting, and is especially fond of scrap quilts.

President – Candy Huddleston Candy Huddleston has been a member of WSQ since 1987 (with a couple of breaks along the way). She has been Chairman of the Quilting Bees twice over the years and has been the Featured Quilter at the Quilt Show. In the “non-quilting world”, Candy served in a leadership capacity in the Air Force & Army National Guard for almost 10 years before heading the secretarial staff of the Building & Planning De-partment in Kootenai County. Candy enjoys making quilts for challenges as it keeps her thinking “outside the box” and allows her humor to show through. She says she’s running for President because the news-letter said one was needed now & it was something she planned on doing once she retired (and now she is).

2nd Vice President Quilt Show – Anita Pederson Anita Pederson lives in Orchard Prairie which is between Millwood and Mead. She worked for 13 years at the Quilting Bee when it was located on Dishman-Mica Rd., then for 13 years as a bank teller. In 2005, she started a longarm quilting business She has been the President of INMQ for 5 years and has served on numerous committees before that. Anita loves all aspects of quilting but wishes she had more time to work on her own projects. She joined WSQ in the 1980’s and has helped with the quilt show for several years. Secretary – Doris Butler Doris is an almost lifelong resident of Spokane and now lives in the River District of Liberty Lake. She is a retired Administrative Assistant with experience in taking minutes at her jobs in higher education, as a church secretary, and with an architecture firm. She has held numerous volunteer positions with Camp Fire, school and church committees. She has been a member of WSQ since 2006 and especially likes pa-per piecing and art quilting and has a love/hate relationship with rulers. She is interested in the WSQ Sec-retary position because she admires the many activities of WSQ members and would like to be of service to the organization. Treasurer – Nancy Ledeboer I recently retired from a career as a librarian and now I enjoy spending time with grandchildren, reading, hiking, traveling and quilting. Being retired gives me time to explore new places both here in the north-west and around the world. I serve on the KSPS Board of Directors and am a member of the Sierra Club. As a member of WSQ I have attended evening meetings and I look forward to attending afternoon meet-ings to meet more members. Now that I have free time I'd like to get more involved and I'd be honored to serve on the board to further the educational goals and mission of the organization.

Susan grew up in northern BC, Canada, in a community reminiscent of the pioneer days, with no electricity or indoor plumbing. In those cold winters, sleeping under a handmade quilt with wool batting from the family sheep was the ultimate luxury. Those hard-working, close knit days shaped her faith and family, which remain the source of joy in her life today. For Su-san, making quilts is a deep expression of care and creativity. She regularly contributes projects to Hands to Help and Wee Ones Quilts, two organiza-tions that gift quilts to those in medical crisis. Susan lives on an acreage north of Spokane with her husband, dogs and a cat named B, and a flock of chickens who are prolific egg-layers. Her four kids are grown, and living their own dreams, but often find their way home for a home cooked meal or cinnamon buns. When she’s not quilting she can be found digging in her flower gardens or cycling the trails of Spokane. She was largely self-taught. She began sewing garments in her childhood (on a treadle!) and grew up making clothes and quilts alongside her mother. She used all the traditional quilting methods - tracing templates with a ballpoint pen, cutting with scissors, and hand quilting on a room-sized frame. She branched out into using a rotary cutter, but in fact made very few quilts until her children were well into high school. By that point she had inherited all her mom's scraps, and she found she loved using mixed fabrics for a scrappy feel, but increasingly was drawn to more contemporary settings that offer plenty of room for playing with shapes and designs. She loves quilts with a limited palette, with pops of color, and those with negative space for the eye to rest. To her, that adds drama to whatever story the quilt is telling. In early 2015 a friend invited her to play on her longarm quilting machine for an afternoon. Just a few hours in, she absolutely knew this was the dream for her. She very shortly purchased a used longarm, and named her Lucy and never looked back. In just over 3 years she’s quilted nearly 400 quilts; about 65 of them are her own. She loves both the piecing and the quilting processes, and now she’s exploring the de-signing and publishing process as well. She very much enjoys being a part of a sharing and supportive quilting community. It's only in the last few years that she has had easy access to classes and shows, and she so enjoys them, and the exchange of ideas and enthusiasm that result.

SPECIAL EXHIBIT AT THE QUILT SHOW

For the past several years Cherrywood Fabrics has presented a themed chal-lenge. Some of the past challenges have been Wicked, The Lion King and for 2018 the challenge was a 20” x 20” quilt inspired by the art of Vincent Van Gogh. They have many requirements, one of which is to use their Cherrywood solids hand dyed fabrics. The entrants submit a photo of their quilt with an entry fee and the judges select the current traveling exhibition and award prizes.

We are very excited to be able to exhibit these beautiful quilts this year for the WSQ Quilt Show. Please stop by the booth to see this stunning exhibition. Below is a sample entry.. I hope to see you at the show. Cheryl Clossin QS Special Exhibitions
