Going on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje means to respond to an amazing gift manifested since 1981:The daily presence of the blessed Virgin Mary Queen of peace. Certainly each one can bring many personal

motivations, however there are some fundamental lights that Our Lady has lit in this place across her presence and her messages.

When her messages began in 1984 destined to the parish, Our Lady immediately addressed an explicit invitation: “ Dear children, I desire that you are always more numerous with me and with my Son” (3-1-1984), and then continued: “ I am grateful to you for coming here” (3-15-1984); “ Continue to come always more numerous” (3-22-1984).

But the physical presence is not sufficient. Our Lady asks, from the start listen and loyalty to her teachingsWhich are not exhausted in the recovery of some Christian practice but with a commit-ment to put God at firstPlace and to no longer serve two masters (cf. Mt 6, 24-34); this is the sense of the great message given in thefirst days of the appearances: “I have come to tell the world that God exists”. From this primacy of God, drawsmeaning the gift of Mary’s special presence that speaks and teaches, and desires that each one of us com-prehends more and more which great richness emanates this gift: “Pray that you may understandeverything that I offer you here” (4-25-1987).

The first opportunity that Mary offers at Medjugorje is to meet God: “Dear children, seek God through me”(6-25-2001). That Mary leads souls to meet God is a fundamental principal of Christianity, that makes usmeditate the teaching of the saints who were particularly bound as St. Bernard, St. Lewis Grignon de Montfort,St. Bernadette, St. Maximilian Kolbe.

San Giovanni Rotondo

St. Pio from Pietrelcina: It's him the Saint Symbol of the XX century, the most venerated from the Italians. From north to south of the peninsula, the devotion towards this Capu-chin friar and priest, born in 1887 in Pietrelcina, of Campania and died in San Giovanni Rotondo (Foggia) in 1968, is in constant growth. The adoration of his person had assumed already imposing dimensions when Padre Pio was in life. A veneration due to the supernatural and thaumaturgical abilities that followers and believers have attributed him since 1918, when the friar told the episode of the apparition of a personage who pierced him with a spear and the world came to know of the appearance of the stigmata.

The historical event and the mystery of the stigmata.Since 1911, Francesco Forgione, who became a priest in 1908 under the name of Padre Pio, he had informed his spiritual father of the appearance of the stigmata. Initially interpreted by medicine as a disease of the epidermis, these lesions concerned hands and feet, and accompanied him for 50 years. The historical event and the mystery of the stigmata. Conflicting opinions about their genesis: tangible and obvious sign of his holiness for followers and supporters, self-infli-ction choice for others, were the subject of repeated analysis. The curiosity aroused by the event spread throughout the world, nourished by other miraculous signs: the person of Padre Pio gave off an unusual smell of jasmine and his intercession with God would be responsible for miraculous healings and conversions. The attitude of the church was cold and skeptical, even in light of some medical reports supporting the thesis of self

infliction of wounds. The episode was not assigned "value of a supernatural character", but this did not cause a stop in the popularity of the friar, not even when he was forbidden to celebrate Mass and to confess the faithful. Gradually the attitude changed, as witnessed from the start of the process of canonization shortly after death. Recent history tells how in 1999 he was beatified and on June 16, 2002 in St. Peter's Square, was Pope John Paul II to proclaim him Saint. Since then, the anniver-sary celebration of St. Pio of Pietrelcina falls on September 23rd of every year. The miracle that has allowed the sanctification regards the healing "scientifically unexplainable" from meningitis of Matteo Pio Colella, a seven year old boy born in San Giovanni Rotondo.

San Giovanni Rotondo and the church of Padre Pio, designed by Renzo PianoYou go on a pilgrimage to San Giovanni Rotondo, in Foggiano area, to pray in the places where the earthly existence of Padre Pio was accomplished. The itinerary of the faithful may begin with the Capuchin mona-stery, where you visit the saint's cell, and to then continue with the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the parish in which he said Mass and with the modern and magnificent church of Padre Pio , designed by architect Renzo Piano. It’s here that the faithful live the most intense moment of the pilgrimage, because inside are preserved the remains of the saint . Equipped with bronze stations, the stations of the cross externally, another obligated step for devotees.

Pietrelcina, the birthplace of the saint with the stigmataThe small village of Pietrelcina, the origin of

which is probably Norman, emerges to a shortdistance from Benevento. It’s here, at the civic number 27 in Vico Storto Valle, which was born the future saint and his home of birth, is still today preserved and visited by thousands of faithfuls, it is the place where for the first time they were manifested, at the end of a period of illness, the stigmata. Among other sacred places, it was suggested the parish church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, recently became a sanctuary titled to Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. During the Christmas season, the living Nativity scene is particularly appreciated that reproduces the magic of Bethlehem in this Campano town.

The Sanctuary of the Black Virgin Mary

The most precious treasure of Jasna Góra is the miraculous painting of Our Lady. That made in a short time Jasna Góra's the most famous shrine in the country.

The painting of the Madonna has a complex history . Tradition says infact that it was made by St. Luke on a wood that formed a table used for prayer and food of the Holy Family. The evangelist would have composed in Jerusalem two pictures in order to pass on the incomparable beauty of Mary. One of them, arrived in Italy, it is still the object of worship in Bologna, the other, was first brought to Constantinople and placed in a temple by Emperor Constantine.Subsequently it was donated to the Russian prince Leo, who served in the Roman army, which moved the priceless relic to Russia where, for many miracles, was intensely worshiped. During the war waged by Casimir the Great, the painting was hidden in the castle of Beltz and finally entrusted to the Prince of Opole. These, on the eve of a hard battle against the

Tatar and Lithuanian troops besieging Beltz, had invoked the sacred image, and after the long-awaited victory, he pointed to Mary as Mother and Queen. It is also said that, during the siege, a Tartar injured with an arrow the beautiful face of the Virgin on the right side, and after the sacrilegious desecration, a very dense fog, suddenly arose, putting the besiegers in difficulty. The prince, then, taking advantage of the favorable moment, threw himself with the troops against the enemy and defeated them. Other documents ensure that, terminated the administration of Prince Ladislaus in Russia , the picture was loaded on a wagon with the intention to bring it to Silesia but , among the amazement of all , the horses , while repeatedly beaten would not move . The prince ordered then to attach new ones, but without getting any results . Shocked, he knelt to the ground and promised to transfer the venerated effigy on the hill of Czestochowa, in the small wooden church. Later he would have erected a basilica in the same place, at the same time made a convent for the hermit friars of the Order of St. Paul. But the vicissitudes of the Black Virgin were not finished yet.In 1430 some of the followers of the heretic John Hus, from the borders of Bohemia and Moravia, under the guide of the Ukrainian Federico Ostrogki, attacked and raided the convent. The painting was snatched from the altar and carried outside before the chapel, cut with the saber in several parts and the sacred icon pierced by a sword. Badly damaged, therefore, it was transferred to the municipal headquarters of Krakow and

entrusted to the custody of the City Council . The right cheek of the Virgin is marked by two parallel gashes and by a third that passes through it, the neck has six other nicks, two of which are visible, four just perceptible. After the desecration and the restoration, the fame of the shrine grew enormously and the pilgrimages increased, to the point that the original church resulted insufficient to contain the number of the faithful. For this reason, already in the second half of the fifteenth century , next to the Chapel of Our Lady, the start off was given for the construction of a Gothic church with three large naves. In 1717 the miraculous painting of Our Lady of Jasna Góra was crowned with the papal diadem, and starting from the last century, many churches dedicated to her were erected all over the world: currently there are approximately 350, of which 300 only in Poland. The growing fame of the miraculous image of the Mother of God made the ancient monastery become over the years a constant destination of devout pilgrimages. The cult of the Black Virgin of Czestochowa has so extended to the American continent, in Australia, Africa and also in Asia. A devotion that has no boundaries, which touched the hearts of many, and that she was particularly to our revered Holy Father , Pope John Paul II, that of Mary has always been the most faithful devotee.
