Program Completion Requirements
Students need to: •Maintainacourseaverageof 80% orabove. •Attendatleast80%ofthe scheduled lecture/lab hours •Successfullycomplete100hours of externship experience •Performminimumof100 venipuncturesand5fingersticks •Studentswillbeparticipating invenipuncturestickswith other students in the classroom/labsetting.

Student Admission/Completion RequirementsProgram DescriptionThis course is designed to prepare studenttodrawbloodspecimensfrom patients for the purpose of testingandanalyzingblood.Aphlebotomist’sjobincludesmaintenanceofequipmentusedinobtaining blood specimens; the use ofappropriatecommunicationskillswhenworkingwithpatients;theselectionofvenipuncturesites;thecare of blood specimens; the entry of the testing process into the computer;aswellasclericaldutiesassociatedwithrecordkeepingofthebloodtests.
The course consists of theory and clinical experiences in performing bloodcollections.Emphasisisplacedon safety and proper selection of collection sites and the care of the collectedspecimen.Infectioncontroliscovered,aswellasanexplanationofvariouslegalandregulatoryissuesrelatingtophlebotomy.Othertopicsthatarecoveredintheprograminclude collection of other body fluids,bodycavities,bodyfunctions,andstructurallevelsofthehumanbody.
CPRcertificationwillberequiredprior to entering the clinical facility;CPRcertificationisadministeredwithintheclassroompriortoenteringtheclinicalfacility.
GraduatesareeligiblefortheAmericanSocietyforClinicalPathologycertification.
