II am blessed and cursed with a sonwho sees flaws in our home, andwho is overcome with excitementat the idea of having those flawsfixed. Sure there’s a level of DIY inhis joy, but he really just wantswhatever needs to be fixed orchanged to look awesome.

Water in the basement? He says, let’s get that fixed and then install astate-of-the-art movie theater, withplenty of room for a stage, areas for him to putdisplays, and the most comfyfurniture anyone has ever created.

Our less-than-desirablebackyard? He says, let’s put on amulti-level covered deck with alarge entry way from the back ofthe house, leading down to anoutdoor kitchen (make itawesome) and extending out to agazebo, large garden and multiple

water features.Front yard a little bare since

our holiday stuff was packedaway? He says, we need moretrees and flowering bushes, plusa winding brick walkway, tonsof solar lights, and—again—multiple water features. Oh andour house needs all the oldsiding replaced, the chimneyrepointed, a wrap-around porchand maybe another floor put on.

He’d also like the drivewayredone with hand-laid pavers.

This is why it’s hard to be theeditor of HOUSE & HOME.When you have a magazine asbeautiful as this, with imagesand articles about the seeminglyendless possibilities forbeautifying your home, theother folks in your house startto look around and question

things. At least my wife isthoughtful enough to keep hersalivating over kitchens andrenovated homes toherself…most of the time. Aidan, though, has no such subtlety. Hesees the magazine and thinks weshould get this and that and thatand this. Oh and HOUSE &HOME’s pool stories? I have tolock them away from the wide-eyed water lover. His head would explode.

Of course, I would loveeverything in this magazine. Iactually dream of having some ofthe homes and gardens we writeabout, to be honest. And when Ilook around my little castle (withan emphasis on “little”) I oftenthink: I want an updatedbathroom and a renovatedbasement, a well-manicured yard

and those cherry wood kitchencabinets, an enclosed deck and anornate porch. I want all of thatand much more.

So, I guess you could say thatmy son comes by his “fantastichome” lust honestly, and I’dventure to say it won’t decreaseanytime soon. You see, I knowwhat’s in this issue of HOUSE &HOME and the ones to come, and I am in for some big troublewhen Aidan gets hold of his copies.

Daniel

TIPS TO READY HOMESFOR SWIFT SALESpring is traditionally the hottest sea-son for home sales as families look tomove between school terms, people havereceived their tax refunds, and thewarmer weather makes moving easier.Sales tend to peak in April, stayingstrong through June and July with morethan half of America’s moves taking

place in the summer. An uptrend inexisting-home sales has continued asJanuary 2011 sales increased 2.7 percentover last year and are forecast to keep rising throughout the summer, according to the National Association of Realtors. Here are tips to help homeowners readytheir home for a swift sale, courtesy ofPower Home Remodeling Group.• Curb Appeal is Key: This quick wayto draw buyers to a home includessimple fixes like updating a home’sfront door or siding, drastically impact-ing its value. Choose neutral, moderncolors that will appeal to a wide rangeof buyers when changing your home’sfaçade. Popular color palettes includeyellow siding with brown shutters, slateblue with black shutters or white sidingwith a red door. These combinationsare classic yet modern and will high-light your home without distractingpotential buyers. • Maximize Interior Appeal:Enhance your home’s interior by mak-

ing sure it is thoroughly cleaned andclutter free. Begin storing personalitems to remove your personality fromthe home allowing potential buyers toenvision themselves living there. Also, tackle items that have been on your to-do list like repainting dingy walls, removing wallpaper, repairing cracks, and fixing dripping faucets and showerheads. Staging a home with new bed-ding, showy towels or a neutral coat ofpaint can make a huge difference inlanding a sale. • Buyers Are Looking for “Green”:Increase your home’s energy efficiencyby updating insulation, installing ener-gy-efficient windows, using CFL bulbsin light fixtures, installing weatherstripping around drafty doors andinstalling low-flow showerheads. Also, play up your home’s green potential. For example, if your house faces southor west it could be a great candidatefor future solar panels. H&H

Not your parent’sswimming pool

Today’s in-ground concrete swimming pools are notjust for swimming anymore, explains Jeff Renneisenof Aqua Bello Designs in Plumsteadville. Conveying a “resort” in your very own backyard, the modern in-ground pool is often as much a part of thelandscape as the landscaping itself. It may featurecustom stone pool coping, boulder waterfalls, divingrocks, or even slides or flumes incorporated into ahillside. In fact, virtually any shape and amenity ispossible, says Renneisen. Many pools have attachedspas that can be raised, adding a waterfall effectfrom the spa. Another popular feature is a sun-shelf,a 12- to 14-inch-deep area in the pool where youcan set up a few lounge chairs and relax. You caneven add an umbrella to provide a little shade whilesitting in the pool on a hot day.

One of the biggest advancements to occur in theswimming pool industry is over at the equipment pad, explains Renneisen. Ultra-efficient, variable-speedpool pumps with built-in safety measures, heat pumpsand LED lights are just a few improvements. Yes, thereis even an “app” for that—you can now control yourpool from an iPhone, managing the lights, heaterand even turning on the spa so it will be ready whenyou get home from work. A true pool professional willbe well versed on the latest and greatest technologyfor your new pool, he explains.

A well-built, well-maintained and properlywinterized concrete swimming pool will last for manyyears. The most important thing to do if buying apool is to carefully scrutinize how it will be built. Don’tsettle for materials of lesser quality. How a concretepool is built and, most importantly, how that processis managed is critical when shopping for a poolbuilder. TThe concept of the outdoor kitchen has evolved over the years.Nowadays, homeowners want everything—including the kitchensink—as part of their outdoor cooking area. It’s still a relativelynew concept, but it continues to gain ground. “The idea of theoutdoor kitchen really came from the West Coast,” says JaceKieffer, marketing manager with Kieffer’s Appliances.“Homeowners on the East Coast may have had a grill, but thatused to be it. Today, homeowners are putting more money intotheir homes, and into their outdoor living areas. They want tobring the comforts and luxuries of the indoors, outside.”

Antonucci says that another trend is to have a grill that has thecapability of using natural gas and old-fashioned coals, all in onepiece of equipment. This gives the homeowner lots of versatilitywith their cooking. Robert Lascelle, owner of My Deck andHunterdon Builders, says that if the cooking area is part of adeck, it can still be its own area. “Almost all of the decks we dotoday include a bump-out or built-out space so that homeownerscan create a cooking area that doesn’t intrude on to the deck,”says Lascelle. “This way the grill isn’t in the way of the sittingarea and doesn’t have to be moved around. It has its own space.”

Since the grill is often the focal point, many homeownerswant all the bells and whistles. “I just recently did a grill area thatwas complete with warming drawers,” says Jay Mascaro, president, Oasis, Inc. “Many homeowners who have a pool, alsowant to create a grilling area right there so that they don’t have togo back and forth from the house. Homeowners are looking forcomfort and convenience in creating these outdoor living areas.”

Depending on your location and proximity to a natural gasutility line, you may be able to eliminate your under-the-grillpropane tank. “One of the advantages of having us set up thegrill is that you can pipe natural gas or propane directly to

“The popularity of outdoor kitchens has soared because clientsare building elaborate backyards that include pool houses, pavilions, pergolas and pools with built-in bars, seating andgrottos,” says John Antonucci, president of Sal’s Nursery andLandscaping, Inc. “The outdoor kitchen is an extension of theseentertaining spaces and provides another element ofentertainment for the family and for guests.”

Michael Cristinzio, landscape designer with Green AcresNursery, agrees and says that outdoor kitchens go along with theoverall trend of creating outdoor living spaces that are essentiallyan expansion of the home. “People want to be outdoors and get toenjoy their yards,” he adds. “This is just another way to do that.”

BRINGING THE INDOORS OUTSIDE

The designers and builders say that almost any aspect of anindoor kitchen can be brought outside. Homeowners arerequesting outdoor kitchens with features including refrigerators, freezers, cocktail stations, sinks and more, says Kieffer. “But thefocal point is almost always the grill,” he adds. “That’s what youtypically want to start with, and that’s what you build around.”

Most of the outdoor kitchens today have a built-in grill.

them,” says Lascelle. “Even if you’re not doing a full-blownkitchen and just putting a grill on the deck, we can still run afeed up to it. That means you’ll never run out of propane whilecooking your filet mignon on the grill again!”

Another emerging trend is the brick pizza oven, adds Cristinzio.Homeowners want to create their own wood-fired pizza and theseovens are becoming another centerpiece of the outdoor kitchen.“They’re definitely becoming really popular and are something thatwe can custom build for the client,” says Cristinzio.

For the countertops, many homeowners want to go with astone like granite. “Granite is a great product for outdoor kitchencounters because it’s made to stand the test of time and holds upgreat in various weather conditions,” says James Freeman, vicepresident of sales and marketing for Colonial Marble & Granite.“It’s one of those products that will really bring some luster andbeauty to any outdoor kitchen and it’s incredibly lowmaintenance, too.”

Freeman says that marble is also an option for something truly unique. “It definitely requires a little more maintenancebecause the product is porous and more susceptible to weather,”he says. “But the look is absolutely spectacular. It makes for abeautiful kitchen.”

EXTENDING THE SEASON

While an outdoor kitchen may get its most use during thesummer season, there are ways to lengthen its life. “One way toextend the use of the outdoor kitchen area is to add a fireplace orbuild the kitchen under a closed roof structure such as apavilion,” suggests Antonucci. “Also, the use of gas heaters in theseating area has become popular.”

Cristinzio says that a firepit or fireplace can even allow thehomeowner to start regularly using their outdoor kitchen as earlyas the late winter/early spring—and can extend it through thelate fall. “It’s definitely a great way to get more bang for yourbuck,” he says. “You’re going to be able to stay warm longer, >>>

plus they make a beautiful addition to the space.”

Antonucci adds that today’s firepitshave evolved from a small structure into“resort-sized areas that can seat as manyas 10 to 12 people.” While these can begreat additions to an outdoor kitchenarea, the placement of any fire elementrequires attention. “Often they do needto be positioned further away from thehome and other outdoor structures forsafety reasons,” says Antonucci.

An outdoor kitchen can be a greatway to enhance a backyard while alsoadding value to the home. And withsome thoughtful planning, you can evenextend its use later into the season. Acompany that specializes in outdoorkitchens can help with the layout. “Thebest thing a homeowner can do is to

tips and trade secrets to help you achieve some

grilling greatness

By Leigh Bell

Above: Keep meats savory and succulent with a silicon basting brush. Thiscast-iron pot and brush set from Sur la Table allows you to prepare saucesright at the grill. The brush nests in the pot handle for storage. Photo courtesy of Surla Table.

Top: Grilling a feast that’s well done doesn’t have to be a rare occasion. Agreat grill, a few tools and some know-how can make your outdoor feastsphenomenal.

DDad. Outdoors. Food. Fire. Grilling recalls the beginning ofcivilization. It’s innate in men (and women, too). It’s all aboutchasing down the perfectly grilled meal—the grill of the chase.

Today’s technology provides assistance for this primalactivity, from gadgets to gear to innovation. Still, in essence,it’s grilling man (or woman) vs. nature.

HOT STUFF“The single most important thing is a good digitalthermometer,” says Konrad Haskins, grand championpitmaster out of Austin and founder of The BBQ Institute. “Ifyou don’t know how to cook the meat, if you don’t have atarget temperature, all the seasonings and all the marinades inthe world are wasted.”

Techies may opt for thermometers with a portable receiverthat sounds when the meat reaches temperature, allowing thegriller to mingle in the kitchen or elsewhere up to, on average,100 feet from the grill itself. Remote-transmitter thermometersrange in price of about $40 to $80 or more for those with dualthermometers.

CHOOSE YOUR WEAPONGrab a spatula in one hand, tongs in the other. Buygood ones once, and neverworry about it again. Gowith stainless steel and goheavy duty. Haskinssuggests shopping at arestaurant supply house.“Those are usually cheaperand much better qualitythan fancy ones you buy ina retail store,” he says.

Silicon is the innovationwith baking, but it rocks barbecue, too. Try a silicon bastingbrush to load up the meat with your marinade. Many of theseare heat-resistant up to 500 degrees and dishwasher safe. Thereare silicone forks and other useful items, too.

Try mastering the grilling of fruits and veggies. The calorie-conscious and vegetarians in your life will be thankful, butyou’ll also impress the carnivores. For containment on thegrate, get a good grill wok for about $30. This keeps theveggies from falling, and while right over the heat, gives thema great smoky flavor. Woks work very well with rosemaryonions or ginger carrots, as well as shrimp, scallops and stir-fries without a lot of oil.

Charcoal and gas grills continue to offer time-saving conveniences foroutdoor chefs. This Weber Performer Grill ignites charcoal at the touch of abutton, no lighter fluid required. Photo courtesy of Sur la Table.

Haskins also has alittle secret up hissleeve called 3BC:butter, brown sugar, bourbon andcinnamon. It turnsany grilled fruit intogourmet but worksespecially well withfreshly grilled peachesor pineapples. Voila, dessert! And if you’reworried about a sticky

grill, use a pan. “If you’re not cooking vegetables and fruit on the grill,

you’re missing out on a whole lot of fun,” Haskins says.

Not as sexy, but also essential, are necessities to keep your grill andnearby surfaces tidy. Consider items like The Grill Daddy cleaningdevice which reduces that annoying “scrape, scrape, scrape.” About$20, the Grill Daddy’s handle holds water that streams out whileits stainless-steel brushes grime off a heated grill.

BIG GRILLS DON’T CRYIf you’re gonna grill—we mean really grill—get ready to investin a grill. And we mean a grill.

After already dropping a few hundred dollars on their firstfew grills that fell apart after a year or two, many grillers look forthe Cadillacs of grills. There are many to choose from, and everyyear they seem to have better, cooler and bigger amenities.

But they’re not inexpensive; some models begin at $1,500and go up from there. Thing is, you can get a cheaper one,but that’s what you’re getting—a cheaper one. The morepricey ones are made better and will still be chugging at theend of the day. In the long run, you’re not really saving any money. H&H

stunning. Architectural Concrete Design, of Levittown, PA, ispassionate about designing and installing an attractive, durable concrete space that homeowners will fall in love with.

“Our concrete is so beautiful you’ll want to live outside,”declares the company’s website.

BRINGING THE INDOORS OUTSIDE

Living outside is exactly what more and more homeowners aredoing these days, says Chris McMahon, CEO and president.“They’re bringing the indoors outside and creating outdoorliving areas. Their patio or pool deck essentially becomes anextension of their home,” he explains.

The trend over the last few years has been for people tomake the choice to stay local and enjoy their home, saving uptheir money to go on a big vacation just once a year. Insteadof spending their funds on fleeting, occasional trips, they arelooking to invest in their backyards, making them into escapesfrom the stress of daily life as well as warm and inviting placesfor entertaining.

“We can create not just driveways, patios and pool decksfor people, but can custom fit tents so homeowners can hostbanquets and events in places they wouldn’t be able tobefore,” explains McMahon. “It becomes a multipurposespace as opposed to just a yard or patio.”

In addition to the decorative concrete they are alreadyknown for, Architectural Concrete Design also offers a fullline of hardscaping products including natural stone, pavingstones, retaining walls and decorative walls.

More and more homeowners are bringing the indoors outside and making the backyard a warm and inviting place for entertaining.

WWith constant advances in technology, as wellas a desire to live not only more efficiently butmore comfortably, some very exciting productsand services have emerged on the market. Hereare five you should keep your eye on.

ENERGY EFFICIENCYAs more homeowners explore the possibilities of utilizing renewable energy, alocal company has been helping them find the information and answers theyneed on how to do it. Penn Renewables, Inc. provides expertise to those look-ing to save energy. The company owners are energy pioneers, operating theirown solar PV (a way to generate energy by converting solar radiation intoelectricity using photovoltaic semiconductors); geothermal HVAC; and solarthermal, wind, passive and LED systems in their own homes.

One of the simplest ways to reduce energy usage is to put in LED lighting, suggests Paul Stepanoff, COO and co-owner of the company.Stepanoff is a licensed professional engineer in Pennsylvania withmore than 20 years of experience designing and installing renewableenergy systems. “LED technology has gotten to the point where, ifyou get the right fixtures, you can’t distinguish them from a regularbulb,” he says.

But Stepanoff says that no matter what efforts are made to saveenergy, it’s always going to be continually used. “Even if you’re conserving, humans are always going to have to use energy so there’sgreat reason to start producing your own,” he says. “The technologyhas come so far. And it’s not just about being green. Yes, everyoneloves that it helps the environment, but it also helps your financialreturn. Look at it as an investment.”

TOUCHLESS PAPERTOWEL DISPENSERIf you’ve been in almost anypublic restroom lately, you’reprobably familiar with the benefits of an automatic papertowel dispenser. You don’t haveto touch anything, keepinggerms from spreading. Now

you can have that same technology at home. This can be espe-cially useful in the kitchen when you need a paper towel in themidst of cooking, yet have sticky food on your hands.

Unlike the automatic dispensers you may have seen in public bathrooms, with CLEANCut, a touch-less paper toweldispenser, you don’t have to wave your hand back and forth infront of the sensor. The sensors react quickly. And you get tochoose when to cut the paper towel, also done automaticallywith an adjacent sensor. So there’s no need to wait for the appliance to finish dispensing. As soon as your hand triggers that you want the towel cut, it reacts.

CLEANCut reports that besides preventing cross contamination, the technology can also help you use less paper towel and, ultimately, save money. Because you controlhow much (or little) paper towel you need, you can save up to200 rolls of paper towel per year. The dispenser also workswith any brand of paper towels, so it doesn’t matter where theperforation is—you decide when to cut it.

ORGANICLAWN CAREPeople are going “green” inso many areas of their livestoday and lawn care seemslike an obvious area to goorganic. “The carbonfootprint that traditionallawn care leaves is begin-

ning to rear its ugly head with proof of ‘dead zones’ [areashaving reduced levels of oxygen in the water] in both theChesapeake Bay and Gulf of Mexico,” reports ZacMcLaughlin, production manager, Caramanico Organic LawnCare. “Caramanico Organic’s approach to lawn care greatlyreduces the amount of nitrates, phosphates and concentratedpesticides. We’re able to provide a healthy, beautiful lawn with-out the use of harmful synthetics or manure-based products. The product naturally suppresses insects, disease and grubs aswell as adjusts the pH with every visit,” he says.

Despite the benefits, organic lawn care does not cost morethan traditional services. “Synthetics and manure-based prod-ucts of traditional lawn care are often driven by the cost ofpetroleum,” says McLaughlin. “As the price of oil goes up, sodoes the price of traditional fertilizer. Caramanico Organicuses Holganix which is an organic compost tea that is notaffected by the price of petroleum.”

A SHELVINGSOLUTIONKeeping pots and pans oreven canned food in somesort of order can easilybecome a frustrating task. And an unorganized pantrymay lead to purchasing fooditems you already have. Butwith Shelf Sergeant’s Full-

Extension Pullout Shelves, you can convert cluttered, under-used or hard-to-reach areas into spaces that are not only neatand organized, but easier to access.

“Transform your kitchen, pantry, closet or other special areainto a versatile and adjustable pullout shelf system that allowsyou to increase your items without getting on your hands andknees or standing unsteady on a step stool,” says JohnRappoccio, owner of Shelf Sergeant. “This added storage flexi-bility creates the ‘everything has a space’ effect.”

Rappoccio says the custom pullout shelves come in anywidth and depth configuration that the homeowner requires, with varied heights. In addition, Divider Bin Pullouts are alsoavailable in order to vertically store items, and the shelving ishandcrafted from Baltic Birch dovetail-jointed wood. Highquality, full-extension slides allow the homeowner to accessitems that are in the far back of a shelf. They are designed tosupport 100 pounds when fully extended.

DECORATIVE CONCRETEPlain concrete can be boring but it’s frequently used for pooldecks and walkways. Today homeowners have a differentoption. Deko Coatings & Concrete Inc. (Sundek of PA),offers Sundek, a decorative concrete overlay. “The old-schoolthought is that concrete is concrete and there’s nothing youcan do about it,” says Mike Foreman, company president.“But we can take existing concrete and transform it intoalmost any look—whether its flagstone, slate, tile or some-thing else.”

The product can be used on driveways, patios, walkways, garages and more, but most frequently it’s used as pool deck-ing. “The main reason we do so many pool decks is that thisproduct does not get hot like regular concrete and it’s slip-resistant as well as mold- and mildew-resistant,” saysForeman. “Yet it’s still as maintenance-free as regular con-crete. You can shovel snow on it and you don’t have to worryabout scratching. Just about the only cleaning it needs is aspring power-washing. It’s definitely a beautiful product butit’s also the low maintenance and durability that appeals tohomeowners.” H&H

NNature restores, relaxes and soothes us. In our busy, stress-filledlives, it’s the 180-degree opposite of modern technology. Soleave the office behind. Come home from work and refreshyourself. Sit on your patio, hear the trickle of water, look atbeautiful flowers and listen to birds. You don’t have to go far—it can be all right there in your own back yard. That is theappeal of outdoor spaces.

TAILOR YOUR DESIGN

When planning your outdoor living areas, ask yourself, “Whatdo I want from the space?” Think about the sounds you mightlike to have—maybe a water element or plant materials, suchas bamboo and grasses that rustle in the breezes. Consideradding fragrances with herbs, night-blooming jasmine or sweetolive. Maybe try lemon verbena—it can grow to the size of atree, blooms for months and fills the air with a lovely almond scent.

Consider when you’ll be in your garden the most. If you’relike many busy people, you may only get to enjoy your gardenafter work and during the night. If so, use plenty of plantswith white blooms in your landscape. White catches thelandscape lighting and moonlight.

landscaping/hardscapingoutdoor structures:

WWhen considering the landscape design of your property, theoptions can seem endless. Decisions about a new gate, fence andeven a path can be overwhelming when you contemplate theample material, style and pricing options. If you’re thinking ofbuilding or purchasing outdoor structures, you might want tobrush up on some of the fundamentals that designers andlandscape architects rely on.

Constructed elements, when properly placed and well built, can dramatically improve the function and aesthetic quality of alandscape. Optimally, the visual flow between these elements andthe home is fluid. Navigation from one space to the next feelsunencumbered. It should both look and feel right. But how doesone accomplish this? The magic of changing a simple space into apowerful, dynamic and beautiful place is complex. It’s importantto find a quality designer who can incorporate your unique needsand desires into a cohesive and inspired master plan. However, ifyou begin to understand how landscape constructions work (orfail to work), you are better positioned to select features thatbring meaning, purpose and endless visual pleasure to yourproperty.

Structures such as gates, fences, free standing walls, retainingwalls and pergolas serve many functional uses, but what often goesunnoticed is that these structures perform a critical aesthetic role. When properly designed and placed, these landscape features helpour minds organize the space and put us at ease, enabling us toenjoy the other things: a bubbling water feature, striking gardens, the scent of blooming lilac, etc. In addition to helping us “read” thespace we are encountering, structures can artfully create orhighlight an existing focal point and gracefully direct us tointeresting aspects of the space. Likewise, the horizontal line createdfrom the outline of a fence or wall can be used to draw our eye away from uninteresting orunappealing elements.

On the face of it, a stone path seems like a place to get fromone point to another. But it is also a way to lead the eye toanother interesting place or feature that lies beyond. A curvingpath that disappears behind a screen of shrubbery or a wall is aclassic way to create a sense of adventure, curiosity and surprise.Similarly, fences and walls are a reasonable way to delineateproperty lines and keep creatures in or out. But the aestheticfunction can reach far beyond this. A free-standing stone wall, iflogistically placed, can separate a lawn from a sunny, windsweptmeadow or a wooded expanse. This separation defines the spacein a way that inherently makes sense to the mind, body and eye.We are more able to see and enjoy the unique qualities of both

areas. Add a gate and winding path leading up to the fence orwall, and we are invited to enter into the space, adding to therichness of our experience.

When well conceived, these structures can create relaxingnooks for privacy, well-proportioned living spaces that highlightthe most interesting views, and lines that direct attention and/ormovement from one area to another. The details of these elementsare also critical—they should relate to the existing structures inproportion, material, color and style.

If you’re grappling with the need or desire for a fence, gate, wall, pergola or some other sort of structure, explore places youfeel have gotten it right. Alternatively, you can begin to considerplaces that have definitely gotten it all wrong. Do the builtelements relate harmoniously to the existing structures, or do theylook like add-ons? Do the walls, paths or fences help you findyour way through the space and create dynamic areas? Or do theyseem plopped down amid a void of endless lawn or hardscaping?Do symmetrically placed stone columns direct your attention to agorgeous view, or is your attention brought to an expanse ofasphalt? As you consider these issues, you will begin to recognizethat the design and layout of these structures is just as critical as thematerials and craft used to build them. In the meantime, you’llhave an excuse to find and luxuriate in some fantastic places.

interior and exterior painting

makes your home look new again

Painting keeps a home’s exterior freshPhoto courtesy of AJACS Painting, LLC

PPaint is one of the easiest ways to inject new life into your home.Whether it’s the interior or the exterior, adding a fresh layer ofcolor can actually make your home look brand new. “Paint canbrighten a room,” says Chris Ciavatto, owner of Painting byChris. “It can give your home a sense of warmth and character.”

“Painting is a quick, easy, inexpensive and instant change,”adds Craig Brennan, owner and estimator for Brennan’s CustomPainting, LLC. “A ‘tired’ room can take on a whole newpersonality with minimum effort.”

INTERIOR COLORSWhen it comes to the interior, the local painting experts say thatearth tones and neutrals still reign. “We’re definitely still noticingthe earth tones being popular, along with an overall Old WorldTuscan look,” reports Ciavatto. “Along with the Venetian plaster, homeowners can get the complete look.”

“The earth tones are definitely still dominating,” adds Tony

Chieffo, owner of AJACS Painting, LLC. “They are very user-friendly and pretty much go along with anything you can thinkof, so even if you change some things in the room, the paint isstill going to work. There’s not a whole lot of risk involved in anearth-tone color selection.”

Dominick Natoli, owner of DoMolding.com, LLC, says he’s

also doing a lot of neutrals, but homeowners are still punching itup with an accent wall—a wall in the room that’s given specialemphasis, typically with a different color. However, while Natolisays accent walls are still popular, homeowners aren’t being asdaring with color selection. “Accent walls are still being requested, just not as bold as they used to be,” he says.

No matter what you end up going with, Brennan says it’simportant to choose your paint colors wisely. “Take your flooring, upholstery, wood tones and the room’s exposure to sun intoaccount when you sit down with your paint chips,” he advises.“The best time to make a paint color selection is during daylighthours with plenty of natural light around you. Work with whatyou have and don’t buy into the concept that the latest colorpalette will automatically work for you.”

If you’re still having trouble selecting the right color, it helps tobring an expert in, suggests David Carhart, owner of StarPainting and Wallcovering, Inc. “It’s always nice to get a colorconsultation if you’re not sure about the color,” he says. “A lot ofpainting companies offer that. The consultant will come out andlook at the surroundings and help you decide the right color foryour room.”

BEYOND THE WALLSThere’s more to interior painting than the walls. The ceiling isalso something to consider. “We are doing a lot more light toneson the ceilings as opposed to just white,” says Natoli. “It addsinterest to the room. When you have crown molding, which most

homeowners have or want to add, it’s nice to add contrastbetween the crown and the ceiling line to make it more defined. When you have white crown on white ceiling it blends into one piece.”

In terms of trends, the environmental aspect is also gainingmomentum, adds Chieffo. “Homeowners are more interested inno- or low-VOC [volatile organic compound] paint products,” hesays. “It’s healthier and safer for the environment, but they docost a little more.”

Carhart agrees. “More people are definitely painting ‘green,’”he says. “They’re choosing the eco-friendly products becauseeveryone is becoming more environmentally conscious.”

The experts say that wainscoting and crown molding are alsoreally popular for a home’s interior. “Old homes don’t have thatwood detail so we come in and paint and put up some crownmolding or wainscoting to add interest,” says Carhart. “Even just

some molding around the windows can make a huge differencebecause most homes don’t have that detail today.”

ON THE OUTSIDEPaint on the exterior of a home is just as important. In fact, sinceit’s the first thing that people will see as they approach yourhome, it’s critical for both curb appeal and value. Chieffo saysthat light creams and off-whites are trending for the exterior.“Stark white isn’t as popular a color as it used to be for the home’sexterior,” he says. “And for homeowners who want to be bolderwith color, they’re typically doing that with a front door—accenting with a brighter color. But for the most part, homeowners are keeping the exterior pretty neutral.”

In terms of product, Michael Byrne, president of AlpinePainting & Restoration Services, says that today’s coatingmanufacturers are producing long-term coatings that havelongevity of 10 to 15 years. Alpine Painting is primarily anindustrial commercial painting and heavy coating company, but itdoes cross into the residential market for long-term applications, and Byrne says that’s important to today’s homeowner. “Becauseof these economic times, homeowners want a product that’s goingto last.”

In the end, whether it’s the interior or the exterior, it’simportant to select the paint style and color that is right for you.“It’s all about the homeowner’s personal taste,” says Carhart. “You want to make sure you select something that you will behappy with.”

Brennan offers this advice on making your home fresh with theright coat of paint: “Find inspiration in current publications or

on TV. Let them inspire you, not dictate to you. Your home isyour nest and safe place to land at the end of a busy day. Itshould make you smile because it is perfect for you, not the exactreplica of someone else’s perfect.” H&H

solar energywill make your home a greener place

a brighter future

FFor those looking to “go green,” solar energy is one way toreduce your carbon footprint and save money on yourelectricity bill.

Solar energy works logically in that the larger your house, the larger a system you will need to power it. However, thereare options to install enough solar panels to offset energy costswhile not entirely knocking out traditional energy usage. Inthat circumstance, a house would first draw energy from solarpanels until it is used up and then regular electricity wouldkick in.

THE RIGHT SYSTEM

No matter how much of your energy you choose to offset withsolar technology, any portion helps in the long run. With

Solar panels can be unobtrusive aswell as “green” ways to live your life.Photo courtesy of SolarWorks NJ

energy costs going up and virtually constant concern overconflict in the Middle East, finding ways to harness energyhere at home is the smart way to go.

Tom Mueller, spokesman for BP Solar, says, “The amountof money that a homeowner can save by installing a solarelectric system will depend on a number of factors: the size ofthe solar system, often determined by the amount of availableroof space; the energy efficiency of the home; and the energyusage of the home’s inhabitants. It really makes sense for ahomeowner to contact a certified installer to come out andprovide a specific estimate based on the home design andenergy needs.”

With systems generally ranging in price from $9,000 to$100,000—and the average system costing about $30,000 orso—this amounts to a 25 to 40 percent savings on electricity, depending on how energy efficient your house is. Moreplainly, with the average-sized solar system, if you pay 16 centsper kilowatt-hour, you can save $70 to $80 per month intoday’s dollars.

In addition to installing solar panels, if you chose to makeyour house more energy efficient, your overall savings willincrease. It’s almost as if every $1 you spend making yourhome more efficient is worth $5 of solar energy, on average.

A solar system can be installed in as little as two to threedays and has a 30- to 40-year lifespan that requires little to nomaintenance. Most systems are attached to your roof andwired to the main electrical panel of your home.

SOLAR HOT WATER HEATERS

Solar panels to energize a house are not the only way you cantake advantage of solar technology. Other options include solarhot water, solar swimming pool heaters, solar attic fans andsolar window film.

Solar hot water and swimming pool heaters are an optionfor those who want to use solar power, but might not want toor can’t afford to use it to power their entire home. Because

Before

SUMMER IS COMING and so arethose HIGH AIR CONDITIONING BILLS!SAVE 30% or more on your utility bills

with ULTRAMAX SUPER R thermal reflective insulation.

NJ-PA Energy Group, LLC. has made it possible to reduce your energycosts by 30% or more GUARANTEED in WRITING! It is no secret that highenergy costs are a result of "actual" energy loss. Typically, the single largest areaof energy loss is the attic. Your attic can account for up to 42% of all your energyloss. While adding attic insulation can be an excellent start, insulation by itselfonly slows down radiant heat transfer.

Another reason for high utility costs is depleted R-value. As insulation ages, itsability to resist heat decreases along with its effectiveness. In addition, insulationthat's been subject to moisture or has been compressed over time, no longer canprovide its labeled R-value which in turn is not giving you as much protection asyou think.

The Energy Group recommends adding eShield ULTRAMAX SUPER Rwhich is a highly efficient thermal reflective insulation barrier that stops up to97% of radiant heat transfer. By reflecting radiant heat, your home stays cooler inthe summer and warmer in the winter. Imagine your home cooler and morecomfortable on those hot summer days. ULTRAMAX SUPER R also works inharmony with and enhances the effectiveness of existing insulation.

WHAT WE DO?In addition to proper attic insulation, The Energy Group performs an in-home energy analysis to help homeowners understand - how to manage theirenergy consumption. A consultant will visit your home and review your home'senergy usage and where additional energy savings can be realized.

SO WHY WAIT?Save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars annually with The EnergyGroup’s recommendations, so don't delay. Our GUARANTEE of 30% or morein energy savings is in WRITING. You have nothing to lose except high energybills. ULTRAMAX also qualifies for the Government tax credit.Give us a call today at 877-243-4147 or go to www.energygroup123.com andfill out our Free Estimate Analysis form.

hot water can amount to 30 percent of your electricity bill, installing solar power for a hot water heater can save that samepercentage of your monthly costs. NOTE: You will probably seehigher savings if your hot water heater is electric rather than gas powered.

SOLAR ATTIC FANS AND SOLAR WINDOW FILM

Air conditioning can make up 50 to 60 percent of your energyconsumption in the summer, so cooling a house with solar-powered attic ventilation can reduce that cost. A solar attic fanuses the sun’s energy to pull heat from the attic, therebyreducing the need to cool a house and cutting the airconditioning bill.

Solar window film is another way to reduce utility costsanywhere from 15 to 30 percent. New solar film technologyhas made it more aesthetically pleasing. In the past, solar filmmade windows look shiny, but now it only adds moderate tint. It’s like putting a pair of sunglasses on and looking out your windows.

With heat-rejection properties, solar window films help your home consumeless energy by keeping interior temperatures more controllable and stabl e and, thus, lowering the need for air conditioning, reducing extreme peaks in usageand allowing your cooling system to operate more efficiently and inexpensively.

important considerations to keep in mind

senior-friendly living

TThe idea of aging in place, or the opportunity to stay in yourhome as you grow older, continues to gain in popularity. Soanything you can do to make your home more comfortable andsafer to remain in for the long haul—from basic changes to anentire first-floor renovation—can make all the difference in thequality of your life in later years.

“The appeal to renovating a home in order to age in place isthat people get to stay in their own house,” says Chris Pupillo, partner with Nicholas Pupillo & Sons. “They feel comfortable intheir own environment and may have lived there most of theirlives. While some people may take the route of moving into asenior living facility or a 55-and-over community, there are manyhomeowners who would rather take a proactive approach tofixing up their home so that they can stay there. In the end, itcomes down to what you're most comfortable with,” he says.

“The goal of aging-in-place design is to create a space that canfunction well with limited mobility, eyesight and hearing,” addsarchitect Melanie Smart, LEED, AP, of Cornerstone

mean converting a living space into a bedroom at some point andadding a full bath. The other primary areas that are important toremodel are the kitchen and the entryway,” she says.

Shawn Bishop, president of Corner 2 Corner Construction,Inc., says that, for some homeowners, an elevator may beappropriate in place of a first-floor renovation. “We do a lot ofmedical and ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] work, andeven though most people jump to the idea of having to renovatetheir home for first-floor living, the cost of putting in a two-storyelevator can be significantly less than going through a bigrenovation. Plus, adding an elevator increases the market of thehome and makes it more valuable to future buyers,” says Bishop.“With an elevator, it’s now appropriate for the handicapped andfor the elderly, plus even younger couples could see the appeal ofhaving an elevator at home.”

IMPORTANT CHANGESPatricia Nunan, certified aging-in-place specialist (CAPS) andowner of Lifestyles Design, says that homeowners who plan to agein their home should really focus on maintaining it. “Before youeven worry about building a handicap-accessible bathroom orputting in a ramp—things that a lot of people may not end upneeding—you need to think about basic maintenance,” sheadvises. “If you’re going to stay in the home, you will need a roofthat won’t leak or an electrical system that can handle upgradedappliances. Do those types of things now,” she says.

Of course, Nunan says that some basic changes can also ensurea home is safer for aging. “Inexpensive changes include lever >>>

door hardware, betterlighting—includingmotion lights—andcleaning out clutter,”she says. “The last oneis something I seeoften. It’s important toget rid of any unusedfurniture orknickknacks that havebeen collected over the

years. These present tripping problems and also make itchallenging for someone in a wheelchair or even using a walker tomaneuver around. Too much stuff is a safety issue,” she says.

Adding some automation to the home can also make livingeasier. “Many things can be controlled electronically now—suchas window shades—making it easier for an older person tooperate,” suggests Bishop. “The cost of ‘smart home’ technologyhas really come down. While it was once considered a luxury, foran older person it may be a matter of quality of life andcomfortable living.”

If homeowners decide to convert the home to first-floor living, there are some things to keep in mind. “Most first floors typicallydo not have a full bath, so you’ll need to evaluate where thebathroom is located and whether there’s a way to enlarge it,” saysJohn Gemmi, owner of Gemmi Construction and the currentpresident of the Bucks-Mont chapter of the National Associationof the Remodeling Industry (NARI). “You’ll not only need to geta tub/shower in there, but you may also need extra space to makeit wheelchair-accessible.”

Making the bathroom “senior-friendly” is also critical as thebathroom is where most falls occur, reports Nunan. She also saysit’s the key area of the home to focus on renovating. “If you’re notremodeling, some easy changes include adding grab-bars,” sherecommends. “I also recommend getting rid of rugs, which are atripping hazard. Replace rugs with a heated floor, which is verycomfortable and safer,” she says.

Bishop agrees. “Electric radiant-heat flooring with a timer is agreat addition,” he says. “With the timer, the floor will already bewarm when the homeowner wakes up. Cold tile can be brutal onarthritis.”

“The bathroom can also be made safer with a hand-held showerand seat,” adds Pupillo. “Comfort-height toilets are also very

popular. The idea behind all of this is to design it so that it doesn'tlook like a hospital. With a little bit of creativity and a smart design, these changes can be something that's appealing to everyone, eventhough it would still accommodate the aging group.”

SAFER BATHINGThe bathtub and shower can be one of the most dangerous spotsin the bathroom. “A lot of senior living and retirementcommunities have these soak tubs with high edges that aredangerous for an older person to get in and out of,” says GaryHoughton, owner of Houghton Contracting. “But there areoptions out there with some walk-in tubs.”

“As we age, our balance and mobility decrease dramatically,”says Curt James with Freedom Tubs, a company that handlesseveral brands of specialized walk-in tubs. “Trying to step overthe wall of a traditional tub can be dangerous, especially whenthere’s a slippery surface. Many seniors feel like they don’t havethe option to take a bath because they struggle to get in and outof it. But switching to a walk-in tub provides them the chanceto get easily in and out of the tub without worrying about a

perilous fall.”James says that some of the tubs they carry also include a

therapeutic option like hydro-massage or air-massage. “It’s rare tofind a senior who couldn’t benefit from these,” says James. “Ithelps stimulate blood flow in the body and can give you moreenergy to be more mobile.”

Pupillo also shares that Kohler just came out with a brand newtub called Elevance, which is a rising-wall bath. It features anextra-wide opening and chair-height seat. Once in the tub, youcan raise the wall with one hand, which Kohler reports takes lesseffort than lifting a half-gallon of milk. The wall easily locks intoplace and two watertight seals inflate to prevent leaks.

DECIDING TO STAY

There are certainly many factors to keep in mind when making ahome more senior-friendly, but the good news is that these typesof changes will likely also add value. “Most changes make thespace more functional for all people, not just seniors,” says Smart.“This is called ‘universal design.’ A house that is well-lit with widedoorways, accessible appliances and lots of storage is going to beappealing regardless of age.”

And Houghton says that even some of the most basic changes, such as grab bars and comfort-height toilets, can be wiseinvestments. “You’re not ta king about a lot of money for thosetypes of things, but you’re definitely going to increase the value of

the home because it’s now ready for future use,” he says. Pupillo agrees. “These types of changes are win-win, because

they not only make the home safer and more comfortable to agein, they are going to help the home’s value. It’s going to open thehouse up to a wider market.” H&H
