During the decades a special type of Slovenian dwelling houses was devel-oped in Idrija – the Miner’s House. The building situated at the address Bazoviška 4, which is nowadays re-constructed into a museum, was built in the second half of the 18th centu-ry. In 1910 there were 18 people liv-ing in the house. With its exterior it makes a mighty impression. It is sur-rounded by gardens and on the first floor you can see a typically furnished miner’s apartment dating from the first half of the 20th century.

The mine pumping device with a wooden water wheel (diameter of 13.6 m), the largest of its kind in Europe, was constructed 1790. The pumps had a pumping capacity of 300 liters of pit water per minute and it took the wheel 13 seconds to turn. Behind the Kamšt building there are 4 renovated locomotives which used to transport ore from the Joseph’s Shaft to the smelting plant.

OPENING HOURS: Visits are possible every day, accompanied by a museum guide.

With its collections, exhibitions and other activities, the museum is enabling visitors to recognize the cultural identity and heritage of the Cerkno region. Two permanent exhibitions are presently on display in the museum. Photographs, documents and exhibits comprising the exhibition The Cerkno Region Through the Centuries represent separate segments of the administrative, economic and cultural life in the region and the every-day life-styles of the local population. Authentic items put on display grant insight into the peculiarities of the life in this region. Very important and unique are the laufars, carnival figures with masks cut from the wood of the linden tree. The costumes, masks, the old cus-tom and the ancient beliefs that have remained alive through their annual cer-emony, are presented in the exhibition PUST IS TO BLAME! – A Story about the Cerkno Laufarija. The life-style of the previous inhabitants of the region can also be traced when visiting the homestead of the writer France Bevk in the vil-lage Zakojca, where beside his works the dwelling environment is presented, too.Our most remarkable object within the museum is the Franja Partisan Hospital, a monument of the WWII times, which has been added on the tentative list of the Unesco World Heritage and is one of the European Heritage sites. Unfortu-nately, during the catastrophic floods on Tuesday, 18 September 2007 the Hospital was demolished. Wild flood waters have ruined the access path and most of the cabins. The reconstruction will be conducted according to the plans of an expert commission and will last over a long period of time. All visits have been cancelled.

OPENING HOURS: every day, except Monday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The water barriers were a part of the system for drifting wood and timber used by the mine and the town from the forests around Idrija. They oper-ated between the late 16th century and the year 1926. In 1770 the ini-tially wooden klavže were replaced by built constructions on the rivers Idrij-ca, Belca and Zala; the constructor was a local expert Jožef Mrak. In 1813 the stone klavže on the river Kanomljica were built. Nowadays you can visit the klavže on the Idrijca, the Belca and the Kanomljica. Due to the highly aesthetic construction, extraor-dinary dimensions, age and their op-eration principles klavže rate among the most important monuments of the remains of the Idrija Mercury Mine. The Crypt is the only piece remained of the Hl. Barbara Church that once stood on the location of the present-day main square of the town. It was built mainly with the money donated by the miners, who wanted their pa-tron saint to be watching over their safety in the pit and above the ground. During the allies’ bombings the church was severely damaged and then pulled down completely in 1951. The crypt was reopened to the public in 2007 after the total reconstruction of the square according to the plans of the architect Boris Podrecca. On 22 June, the name day of the Hl. Acacius, there is a church service in the crypt. In front of the crypt itself there is a gallery.LOCATION: The gallery and the crypt are located under the main square Mestni trg in Idrija.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE – CERKNO

The archaeological sites Grad (castle) near the village Reka and Gradišče (site of an ancient fort) near Cerkno date back to the 1st century BC. The re-mains give evidence that the Roman army used to besiege the strongholds of combative settlers of the region, probably the Carnian. Both sieges were part of an extensive military in-vasion and probably took place at the beginning of the Illyrian wars. Numerous iron nibs of catapult mis-siles, spears and various arrows, as well as lead missiles to be used with slings and nails used in the soles of Roman soldiers’ footwear, have been found in an area of 20 hectares. The archaeological findings of the re-mains of Roman siege in the region are of extremely valuable due to the fact they are one of the few to give evidence about the historic event. Some of the finds can be seen in the National Museum of Slovenia.

SACRAL HERITAGE – CERKNO

The baroque style parish church St. An-na in Cerkno dates from 1717 and was built by the local architect Gregor Maček. Two altar paintings and three wooden altars have the most artistic value among the interior equipment. The church of St. Jost in the village Trebenče (picture), dating from 1595 has well preserved gothic elements despite the 17th century reconstruc-tions in baroque style. During renova-tion works frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries were discovered.Church of the Birth of Virgin Mary in the village Police represents typical late-gothic architecture with a baroque-style nave and a bell tower separated from the nave. Frescoes made by Jernej from Loka, and dating from 1536 are the most valuable art pieces in the church.St. John’s church is located on the brink of the plateau of Šebrelje. Be-tween the 4th and the 1st century there was a Roman military stronghold there and later it was changed into a Christian church from a previously pa-gan sanctuary.

CERKNO LAUFARIJA NOVAKI BOW SKI

TOURIST ASSOCIATION NOVAKI M: +386 (0)41 442 151W: www.tdnovaki.com

First, it was just an ordinary wooden ski with metal bindings for shoes in the middle of it. Italian soldiers used them, however the skis tended to break in half at the binding and there-fore soldiers would throw them away. The inhabitants of the region discov-ered that the front part of broken skis could be reused. They sawed them through the broken part and in the middle of them a strap for boots was nailed. However, skiing with such skis was not easy as they were too short and the strap for holding shoes was not appropriate for managing skis. Therefore, an additional part - a bow - was fitted to skis in order to increase the manageability of skis. By rede-signing the skis, skiing balance of ski-ers was improved.

ASSOCIATION “DRUŠTVO LAUFARIJA”M: +386 (0)41 424 498W: http://laufarija.cerkno.net

“Cerkno laufarji” are one of the most famous carnival masks in Slovenia, famous for outstanding wooden masks (“larfe”) and outfit made of natural materials. The carnival event “Cerkno laufarija” has for centuries been or-ganised according to the unwritten rules, only orally transmitted from generation to generation. The mask characters symbolise the bad and the good of different inhabitant groups. The major figure is “Pust”, accompa-nied by a range of other characters forming a family of 25. Among all the typical Slovenian masks the “laufarji” have to follow the most tragic scenario of all. “Pust” is blamed for being guilty of everything bad that happened in the previous year and is sentenced to death with a lumberjack hammer called “bot”. Numerous visitors come to Cerkno every year to admire the popular carnival events.

THE BOTANICAL GARDEN ‘SCOPOLIJEV VRT’

A garden of Idrija’s botanical heritage

INFORMATION: TIC IdrijaVodnikova 3, SI-5280 IdrijaT: +386 (0)5 374 39 16E: [email protected]

J. A. Scopoli was the first miners’ doc-tor in Idrija and an important Europe-an natural scientist who accomplished the best of his work in Idrija. The bo-tanical knowledge of the former region of Carniola originated mostly from Id-rija. The town gained its place in bo-tanical history due to Scopoli. The following names from the botanical world are also strongly connected with the town: Hacquet, Hladnik, Freyer, Dolliner, Dežman, Glowacki etc. As these historical facts were not appre-ciated enough, a botanical garden presenting the plants, discovered or first described by these botanists, was founded. LOCATION: Above the famous Kamšt beside the Joseph Shaft in front of the entrance to water canal Rake.

THE POREZEN, THE WALK-ING PATH TO THE KOPA

The peak of the 1,632 m high Porezen can be accessed by several marked routes leading from different direc-tions. The peak, which offers a charm-ing view of the Julian Alps and other pre-Alpine peaks and extends to the seaside on clear days, is part of the Slovenian Mountain Path. Paragliders use the top of the hill as a starting point, whereas the winter time ena-bles telemark skiing on the steep slopes. While hiking up the hill one can follow the walking path to the Kopa passing the Cimprovka in the village of Goren-ji Novaki (1,050 m). It leads to the 1,360 m high rock on the slope called ‘Kopa’ (heap) due to the resemblance of the rock with the charcoal heaps. The parking lot is equipped with an information board; the path is marked with signposts and trail labels in the form of the Novaki bow ski.
