Welcome to the 2015 Season at CPAC,a year of genuine gems!

Featuring iconic Australian works, laugh out loud comedy, an interactive drumming spectacular, classical ballet, cabaret and a hilarious romp into 1847 with a Parisian Courtesan. 2015 promises to have something for everyone!

2015 is the year of the big show at CPAC. We are experiencing an exciting period of change in the national performing arts landscape with more and more high quality artists seeking to tour regionally. Some of the big players you can expect to see are; the Sydney Male Choir, described as having one heart and mind, producing a sound that is strong, vibrant and lyrical. The Russian National Ballet Theatre will be presenting Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty in September; then, following on from last year’s African extravaganza, the theatre will be filled with the sound of drums with Drum Struck –“slotting in somewhere between Stomp! and The Lion King, Drum Struck delivers on every level”.

Our new website is up and running and we hope that you are happy with the changes that have been made to make it patron friendly and easier to navigate. The popularity of social media continues to expand and we are delighted with the interest shown in our Facebook site – nearly 1000 likes and growing!

Our Civic Theatre partnership will give members the opportunity of seeing Bell Shakespeare’s production of Hamlet and Queensland Theatre Company’s Black Diggers at the subscription price. Both of these productions have been hailed as outstanding by the critics and received rave reviews from audiences.

See you at the CPAC – the city’s great entertainer!

Swamp Juice

Welcome to a swamp like no other!

Using shadow puppets made from bits of rubbish, award-winning performer Jeff Achtem presents a gurgling adventure about one man’s romp through a swamp.

Using no text or dialogue, the audience is plunged into a cartoon-like world where simple household items are transformed into strange silhouette creatures. Meet bickering snails, neurotic snakes and opera singing mice. As the story builds, the shadows begin to defy reality and turn into eye-popping 3D shadow puppets!

The audience ducks as swirling jellyfish swim over, and swamp monsters leap off the screen in a totally unforgettable experience!

SWAMP JUICE is a lo-fi, DIY adventure ready to knock out your eyeballs and tear open your imagination. Most certainly not just for kids!

“Bring the kids ... but unaccompanied adults won’t be ashamed to be first intrigued and then thrilled by this vivid shadowplay. Achtem’s creations travel from the stage to the stalls, to the walls, to the ceiling and right into your head. Innovative, memorable, fun.”THE TIMES, LONDON

“Wonderfully enchanting, an absolute delight ... breathtaking moments.”LONDON EVENING STANDARD

What is the meaning of Anzac Day? For war veterans like Alf Cook and his friend Wacka Dawson, it’s the chance to commemorate history, celebrate heroism and conjure national pride. For Alf’s son Hughie, Anzac Day flies the flag for a very different reality, one that brings the dignity of our Diggers to its knees and into the gutter – via one too many down the pub.

A play that incites as much passion now as ever, The One Day of the Year looks at our national legend through the eyes of generation, class and character.

Director’s note:“It is always a privilege to be asked to direct a classic Australian play. Alan Seymour’s The One Day of the Year stands with Ray Lawler’s Summer of the Seventeenth Doll as a landmark work of the late 1950s. For the first time on the Australian stage, Seymour’s play had the courage to cast a searching eye over one of the nation’s sacred symbolic days - Anzac Day - and to examine, with honesty tempered by compassion, the rifts that open up between family members, generations and classes as a result of this veneration. To revive this great play in the context of the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing is entirely appropriate and will, I’m sure, secure strong houses and induce in audiences a mood of thoughtful celebration.”Denis Moore, Director, The One Day of the Year

“...a compelling piece of theatre and one which no young Australian should miss.”THE AUSTRALIAN

AUSTRALIA DAY JONATHAN BIGGINS

The country town of Coriole is getting ready for Australia Day – a time to crack open a frothy, stick a snag on the barbie and celebrate what it means to be a true blue Aussie.

The Australia Day committee is gearing up to put on the town’s biggest party – but they have a few issues of their own to sort out first. With everyone from the Greens to the local mayor to the CWA wanting a piece of the party pie, it’s proving hard yakka to work out what an Aussie celebration should look like. Nothing is sacred as the national identity is put through the ringer in this thoroughly modern ripper of a comedy!

Will the day be fair dinkum after all? Or are there too many roos loose in the community hall?Written and directed by acclaimed playwright and Sydney Theatre Company satirist Jonathan Biggins (The Wharf Revue), Australia Day returns in a brand new touring production for 2015.

“If you want social satire and huge laughs at the expense of, well, just about everyone in our sun-drenched country, Jonathan Biggins’ Australia Day is just the ticket.”HERALD SUN

“Extremely relevant, honest and clever, Australia Day pokes fun at cultural traditions while asking whether the consequences of change are any better.”CURTAIN CALL

A QUEENSLAND THEATRE COMPANY PRODUCTION

KELLYCowards, murderers or heroes? Life or death?

Ned Kelly is about to hang for his crimes, but his final night in prison is interrupted by the arrival of his brother Dan, disguised as a priest. Supposedly killed at the siege of Glenrowan, Dan is intent on moving north to Queensland and forgetting his past. To do so, he needs Ned’s blessing and forgiveness. But the last time they saw each other, Dan tried to shoot Ned dead.

So begins a brutal confrontation by two titans of Australian history. Facing the sins of their past, each blames the other for their downfall. And neither will escape unharmed.

“Kelly is a subtle, smart imagining of Ned Kelly’s last night alive, charged with unfulfilled potential and torturous regret, and deeply moving to the bitter end.”BRISBANE TIMES

mother, wife CoMPliCated Life

Trying to do it all. Trying to find the dream.

What if women told the truth a little more, to ourselves and each other? What if we admitted marriage can be tough, motherhood is a challenge and doing it all is exhausting. What if, instead of the Hollywood version of marriage and motherhood, we saw a depiction of how it really is - relentless, exhilarating, infuriating, hilarious, complicated.

Meet Lily, Bec, Jessie and Kate, four best friends juggling relationships, kids, work and friends. Together they discover marriage is nothing like the movies, motherhood can push you to your limits and no one makes you laugh like your girlfriends do.

Written by and starring Amity Dry from The Block and The Block All Stars, this funny and endearing show is the ultimate Girls Night Out. Being lauded by critics and audiences alike, it will leave you feeling like your complicated life is completely normal!

A Critical Stages production

Songs for the Fallen by Sheridan Harbridge

On January 15th, 1847, Marie Duplessis – courtesan, party girl, liar and legend – got out of bed, put on a dress, ordered a bottle of champagne, and sat alone in her Paris apartment to celebrate her birthday. She died 18 days later, aged 23 … But Mademoiselle is not done yet.

Songs for the Fallen is a thrilling musical-party charting Marie’s life from poverty to infamy in burgeoning 19th century Paris. This is the wild and hilarious tale of a woman who knew one thing: good girls don’t make history.

Following hugely successful seasons in Sydney and Brisbane that had critics and audiences raving, and with a lush, live pop score by award-winning composer Basil Hogios, you are invited to the decadent final party of the woman who defied her fate and captured a nation.

We’re gonna party like it’s 1847. And it’s going to be HUGE!

“Brilliantly beguiling... wonderfully rip-roaring, outrageous and fun.” THE BRAG

“Songs for the Fallen is a hilarious romp. The singing is exquisite, the performances are divine. 4 STARS.”ARTSHUB
