To: General Superintendent

From: Superintendent, Aztec Ruins

Subject: Quotation for cleantng drainage line

Attached is a quotation dated February 27, 1956 from Foutz and Bursl.lm Construction Company, Inc. of Farmington, New Mexico for replacing 45 feet of 8 inch drainage tile at Aztec Ruins. Following a severe storm in 1954 the line became clogged and on August 30, 1954 purchase order 4O-5-AR was'written to Le Roy Hatley of Farmington for cleaning it. Mr. Hatley waslmable to clear the 45 foot section referred to in the quotation.

I should like to point out that in 1966 after Mr. Hatley had done his work, there was another severe storm which washed in more silt and that after the 45 foot section is replaoed, still more work may be necessary to restore the line to working order.

hOl'lll General Superintendent

Subject: Drainage Line Replace1ll8nt

This will acknowledge receipt of the estimate bT Foutz and ~rtlum Construction Co., Inc. tor replacing the tile drain line at Aztec Ruins.

It is regretable that funds are not available at this tif4e with which to accomplish this much needed project and since the Regional Office 'WitS unable to give us any monetary assistance in a very recent emergency at another area, we cannot hope for any aid frOM them in this matter.

The only thing we can hope to do is give this project a pigb priority in the 1957 fiscal Tear program and hope that it does not rain too much before we can get the line replaced.

Subject: Aztec Drainage Line:

Reference is made to t he quotation by Foutz and. Bursum ot $27.,0 per lineal toot tor replacing approximately 45 teet ot sewer line in t he drainage system. just north of the west Ruin a.t Aztec Ruins. This is a cost ot not less than $1,237.50 tor this work and it may well run higher.

Superintendent Hasting.' memorandUll ot March 5th (D24 C/R H3015) reters to the contract he gave Hately to clean this line and points out also that the line may have become turther silted after this uosucce.sf'ul attempt.

I suggest t hat before we consider any further work on this drainage line we determine a8 accurately as possible just what if anything is wrong with it. There is now at Chaco a pump equipped" tank on a trailer. When we again have a crew here I propose to take this tank and pump to Aztec to test out the entire length of line and determine which parts are inoperative. If sections behind the ruin are not draining we can then arrive at a more accurate figure for their replacement.

In reply refer to: B30

This reters to your _aorandum of Februal'7 1, 1956, inquiring about stabilization work programmed for the 1956 Fiscal Year at Aztec Ruins.

You may be sure that we are aware of the continuing maintenance needs ot your area and have carefully CODS idered these requirements in our estimates and priorities in comparison with the same factors for the other archeological monuments under the jurisdiction of this office.

!JJ you know, the most urgent item at Aztec is the correction of surface drainage to the West Ruin brought about by the recent failure of the. inte~ceptor drainage line to the north side of the site. Periodic inspection and maintenance of the many roofed rOQDl8 of the West Ruin is also a recurring item.' In this same category is the recentl1' excavated and stabilized lhbbard Mound which is susceptible to excessive moisture due to its proximity to irrigated farm land.

In cooperation with this offioe, Archeologist Vivian has established tentative priority listings far both maintenance and stabilization projects for all areas based on past appropriations. Assuming that appropriations for the 1957 Fiscal Year will be similar to those received this year, then the above listed maintenance work, together with stabilization of exposed rooms at the East Ruin, and the construction of one or two built""U.p roofs over prehistoric ceilings, will be performed by the Ruins Stabilization Unit at your area during either the first or fourth quarters of the 1957 Fiscal Year. It is :lJII.possible to say at this time exactly what JIIOnth, but 'it will be either in the summer and fall of 1956 calendar year, or in the spring of 1957.

Your :memorandum pf January 31. 1956. requesting technical advice on the ruins drainage line has been received.

As mentioned in our memorandum to you on February 7, 1956, the Ruins Stabilization Unit is scheduled to perform urgent maintenance work at your area. including the correction of surface drainage. in the 1957 Fiscal Year.

There are no fUnds available from the regular appropriations tor the remainder of this fiscal year, but when Mr. Vivian's crew is on the job this next swmner at Aztec, we can determine it we need turthe r engineering advice.,

During recent discussions on'this subject at Headquarters. lIr. Vivian thought, and we agree, that it will be a costly undertaking to dig up and repair the 1 ine, but that he would try to obtain informal quotations this winter tram various contractors in your vicinity who might be interested in this pro.-ject.

It is possible that IIr. ViTian will have this information when he CaDeS through Globe enroute to projects at Casa Grande and Tumacacori. around March 1.

Meanwhile. I teel there is no further action necessary until we can get a crew into the tield.

Memorandum

To: General Superintendent

From: Archeologist V,tvian

Subject: Completion of underground drainage, Aztec.

Construction project 333.10 rehabilitation of the underground drainage line north of the East and West Ruins at Aztec has been completed.

On Aug. 23 Archeologist Richert, Superintendent Hastings and I inspected this 1400 foot line and tested it by turning irrigation water into the upper manhole. The flow was observed by all three ot us at each manhole and at the outlet. At one point a sample of water was taken tor silt content and it was determined that no silt was present. It was agreed by Messrs Hastings,Richert and mpselt that the line was open and Qperating and that if silt was present it was in negligible quantities.

The line was also inspected by the three ot us before turning in the irrigation water. It was tound that the line was carrying a sub-surface flow from its beginning to a point east of and "downstreamn

from the West Ruin but that beyond this point the flow gradually died away and did not reach the outfall end. Archeologist Richert has observed this line closely during the past month. He has tound that the line flows for its entire length during the night and. during cool periods. on hot days the tlow diminishes and does not reach the outfall. This, as he notes, is the same effeot that can be seen in many small mountain streams. There is a heavy growth of vegetation toward the lower end of this line and transpiration from this vegitation reduces the flow during hot periods.

This points up the fact that the operation of this drainage line cannot be Judged by checking at the outfall end during the daytime.

Our estimates for this job were not too accurate sinoe the line was not plugged at the point Messrs Hastings and Hately had indioated,but21t,~~opped up at two ditferent places. These Aroheologist

Richert cleared by digging up, cleaning and replacing the lineo

Also included in the project was construction of a protective dike to divert water from adJecent farmlands. This dike 1) prevents floodwater from entering the underground drainage through "pipes" or the manholes and 2) also prevents its ponding near the west Ruin where it can back up into some of the lower rooms.

Archeologist Richert is to be commended for completion of a rather exasperating job, cleaning 1400 feet of 8" sewer line, and for having determined for the first time under what conditions this line flows 0
