Because of our success in the elections (we are thelargest representation) we have been able to passresolutions supporting these issues and our positions. Other organizations, such as the Israel Religious Action Center, have also made great strides over the past year in promoting pluralism, tolerance and equality. The WZC or “the Parliament of the Jewish People,”remains the only forum in Jewish life comprised ofdelegates reflecting a broad spectrum of ideological and political perspectives chosen in democratic elections throughout the world. As such, it commands the attention of Israel’s decision makers and serves as our mouthpiece in Israel. More importantly, allocations the World Zionist Organization(WZO) makes to the several Jewish religious streams are determined by the number of its delegates elected to the WZC. Our representation at the last Congress earned an annual allocation of $4 million for five years ($20million). That’s not bad, but needs are expanding and ourmovement is growing so, this time, we need to do even better if we want to change Israeli society. Right now we are in a struggle for the soul of the Jewish State and whose values it will reflect. This is the moment when we can work to create the kind of Israel that we can all be proud of and that mirrors our values as Reform Jews. For more information and to register to vote, go towww.reformjews4israel.org. Our congregation can lead the way in this effort, as we have historically been on the leading edge when it comes to promoting progressivevalues! What can you do to make a difference? Register to vote, because your vote counts.

Rabbi M. Thomas Heyn

RABBI’S MESSAGEWhat Can I Do?

Much of what I write in Chai Lites has to do with theactivities of our caring community and staff, all working hard to create the vibrant and thriving congregation we are becoming. In this issue, I want to turn our attention to something much bigger than any of us individually or even our congregation as a whole. We are members of a larger community that is working to ensure the health and vitality of the Jewish people and its only sovereign political entity – the State of Israel. We have a precious opportunity to influence and impact what happens in Israel by simply voting. The elections for the World Zionist Congress are once again upon us, and we need every single member of our community to be counted.

The purpose of the World Zionist Congress is to discuss the issues facing the Jewish world and to vote on how to deal with these issues. The math is simple: Electing a large ARZA/Reform Movement delegation to the next World Zionist Congress (WZC) will strengthen ReformJudaism’s call for the values and ideals we cherish – like equality, egalitarianism and peace – and will grant theReform movement greater influence to shape what it means to be Jewish in the Jewish State. Recently, we have raised issues concerning freedom ofreligion, gender equality, conversion, marriage anddivorce, and empowerment of young adult leadership.

Rabbi Anat Hoffman and other “Women of the Wall” securing equal rights for Jewish women in Israel. Thanks.

PRESIDENTIAL Perspective

Douglas M. JacobsPresident

I am still basking in the glory of what was an amazing 7th annual Winter Jewish Music Concert. EVERY seat was taken in our BerthaAbess Sanctuary and it was atremendously prideful moment to watch these performers sing their hearts out in our home, TempleIsrael.

I am still riding high as President for a 2nd time and I want you to know that these, and other programs, are whatTemple Israel is all about. I have been coming through these doors since I was 5 years old and while the faceshave changed, and aged a little, the same feelings of warmth, caring and love can be felt each and every time I enter.

Whether it’s a handshake, a thank you, a kiss on the cheek, Temple Israel continues to be my second home and I hope this feeling continues for many years to come.

We have so many more great events and programscoming up. Flip through the pages of this Chai Lites and see what is happening every day here at Temple Israel. And as we approach our 93rd anniversary in May, we have even more planned. We are putting together an exciting May program celebrating our 93rd year and beginning our countdown to 100 years in 2022. We hope you come, participate and take in everything Temple Israel has tooffer.

many of the wonderful regular faces but more and more, we are seeing new faces at or programs and events. Friday night continues to be very well attendedand it seems more people attend the Oneg afterwards than the services? Are my eyes deceiving me?

So let’s not stop there. Filled in the pages of this Chai Lites are many more activities, events and services for you to choose from. We don’t expect you to attendall (we’d like you to) but we do want to see you tocontinue to make Temple Israel the place to be in downtown Miami.

But there is more you can do. Get involved. Serve on a committee. Help us decide and shape the future of Temple Israel for the next few years. Rabbi has startedthis amazing Health and Wellness Initiative. JayMichaelson inspired us in December and we haveanother weekend coming up in March. Tell Rabbi you want to be involved so we can get more and more people connected.

We are also planning a big event for May. While we are still in the beginning stages, we want to create a wonderful evening for all to share. Drop me an email and let me know you want to be involved. You get so much more out of the Temple when you roll up your sleeves and help make things happen.

There is a lot happening over the next few months.

The Central Chavurah is delighted to welcome guest speaker Zooey Kaplowitz, who will present, “Yiddish Radio for Non-Yiddish Speakers,” the fifth in the Chavurah’s program series on Jewish humor. In its heyday in the 1930s,

Yiddish radio flourished across America. Thirty stations in New York alone aired Jewish programming: advice shows, variety shows, man-on-the-street-interviews, news programs, music and game shows in both Yiddish and English. These programs afforded us a snapshot of American Jewish life in the 1930s and 40s - the collision of Yiddish and

American cultures, the dawning reality of the genocide occurring across the ocean, and the day-to-day lives ofimmigrants struggling to make it in a new land.

RESURRECTIONBy Leo Tolstoy

The last of Tolstoy’s major novels, Resurrection tells the story of a nobleman’sattempt to redeem the suffering his youthful philandering inflicted on apeasant girl who ends up a prisoner in Siberia. At the same time, it is apanoramic description of social life in Russia at the end of the 19th century, reflecting its author’s outrage at the social injustices of the world in which he lived.

ORPHAN TRAINBy Christina Baker Kline

Rich in detail and epic in scope, Orphan Train is a powerful novel of upheaval and resilience. It is the story of two unlikely friends . . . each struggling totranscend a past of isolation and hardship, revealing the secrets we all carry that keep us from finding out who we are. Orphan Train is a gripping story offriendship and second chances.

Temple IsraelRELIGIOUS SCHOOLPhilosophy“To live and teach the sanctity of Life”.....Elie Wiesel

Shalom from Miss Jenna and Miss Megan,

We are very excited to have welcomed so many newstudents to Religious School! With a large class, (14 new students!) and such a varied age range (3-6) we haveimplemented the school motto, L’dor V’dor, in a verypractical way within our classroom. Many of our “older”students are eager to help the younger ones witheverything from their Alef/Bet worksheets, to being line leaders, and putting on shoes. The main focus of ourcurriculum this year is teaching our students what it means to be Jewish by focusing on Tzedakah, Mitzvot, Shabbat, and the Jewish holidays, along with our weekly segments of Torah-Story time, Alef/Bet study, and “Mensch” review.

The first grade class at Temple Israel’s religious school is off to a fantastic year. We have explored theological and communal themes in Judaism and related them to our sense of sacred space both locally within our own beautifulsynagogue and more globally in our homeland of Israel. We identified the concentric centers of Diaspora Judaism, the Land of Israel, Jerusalem, the Kotel, the Holy Temple, and its Holy of Holies within which was kept the Ark of the Covenant containing the Tablets of Stone upon which were inscribed the Ten Commandments. These discussions of sacred space have oriented our creative explorations of the weekly Torah portions, the holidays and rituals we have commemorated, the ethics of our Law, and our place insociety. Discussion of the Ancient Temple in Jerusalem was particularly relevant to Yom Kippur and Hanukkah.

Some highlights from our year include several visual art projects. For example, we did a group art project depicted living examples of the Four Species of Sukkot. For this project, I offered the students the option to depart fromcoloring inside the lines and to attempt a little abstractexpressionism. The result was a colorful reflection ofnatural beauty. An individual art project worth mentioning was a paper mosaic depicting Jacob’s dream of angelsgoing up and down a ladder to heaven. We talked about the importance of this vision of a vertical connection andcommunication with the divine at Beth El and the recognitionin our daily lives that G-d was in this place, and maybe we didn’t know it.

We also visited the sanctuary for some music, meditation, and identification of the sacred symbols of our religion. This helped us relate our synagogue-based Judaism in the Diaspora with our inheritance from ancient worship at the Temple in Jerusalem. All in all, it has been a fun andenriching year. The students have been very engaged with learning about and participating in their own expressions of Judaism. We look forward to what the next few months will bring!

Adam Dov GorelickFirst Grade Teacher

We often hear the phrase “It’s not what it used to be” in one form or another, in regards to almost everything from manners, behavior, and parenting to television and fashion trends. Well, why should it be? It’s NOT what it used to be, the world is a very different place than it used to be even 10 years ago. If we raised and dressed our children the same way as we were raised and dressed they would be ill prepared for the world they live in… and teased for their clothing choices. Parenting techniques must evolve along with everything else, but at the root of it are many of the same core values, ethics, manners, and sense ofcommunity that we grew up with, and that we should

continue to pass on to younger generations. We seeevidence of these lessons being taught every Sunday, in a classroom filled with 14 children, ages 3-6, who are(usually) sweet, considerate, and remarkably well behaved.Parents, keep up the great work, and… THANK YOU!

Alan MasonDirector of Music and

Doctor of Musical Arts

I recently had the tremendousexperience and honor ofaccompanying Shabbat servicesat the Union for Reform Judaism National Biennial Convention in San Diego, California. There were 5,000 Reform Jews in attendance, packing the San Diego ConventionCenter, and services werebroadcast live on JLTV (Jewish Life TV), which also broadcast the 2013 Winter Jewish Music Concert last year.

What is Shabbat worship like at the URJ National Biennial? I have a great comparison: pretend it is Sunday morning, you are channel surfing on TV, you come across a huge Christian Crusade in a packed convention center, with great music on the stage, television cameras everywhere, dynamic service leaders, a 200 voiced choir, and a charismatic congregation fully engaged. Now in your mind make it Jewish, and that is what Shabbat worship is like at the URJ National Biennial.

The service leaders I played for are probably the two most significant Jewish clergy in the United States at this time: Rabbi-Cantor Angela Warnick Buchdahl, Senior Rabbidesignate of Central Synagogue in Manhattan, who currently serves the congregation as Senior Cantor, and Rabbi RickJacobs, President of the Union for Reform Judaism. Rabbi-Cantor Buchdahl is the first ever Asian to be ordained, and her newest appointment as Senior Rabbi designate ofCentral Synagogue in Manhattan has been publicized around the world.

The 2015 National Biennial Convention is taking place November 4-8 in Orlando, Florida, and I know many of us will take advantage of the close proximity and attend. It is a great way to meet 5,000 Reform Jews from across the country, and experience the newest and best offerings of the Union for Reform Judaism.

Chanukah CARE PACKAGES FOR OUR COLLEGE STUDENTSOne of Temple Israel Sisterhood’s important annual projects is to keep in touch with ourcongregation’s youth who have gone away to college. For many years, Lois Klein and herfamily have put together wonderful surprise packages that are sent to college students around the time of final exams and Chanukah, just to let them know we care and are thinking of them.

After reaching out to and hearing from Temple Israel families, 10 college students were sent Exam Survival/Chanukah care packages. Seen here, the gift packages are fun, colorful and chockfull of goodies. Based on the pleased and grateful responses of recipients, saidLois Klein, “this project is worth the time and effort over the years.”

KaddishMay God’s name be exalted and hallowed throughout the world that He created, as is God’s wish.

May God’s sovereignty soon be accepted, during our life and the life of all Israel. And let us say: Amen.May God’s great name be praised throughout all time. Glorified and celebrated, lauded and worshiped, exalted and honored, extolled and acclaimed may the Holy One be, praised beyond all song and psalm, beyond all tributes that mortals can utter.

And let us say: Amen.Let there be abundant peace from heaven, with life’s goodness for us and for all Israel. And let us say: Amen.

May the One who brings peace to His universe bring peace to us and to all Israel. And let us say: Amen.Zichrona L’vracha, May their memory be for a blessing.
