The effect of the cr isis was manifold, and the Hambling s i de of our activities has un doubt edly suffered. severely., a nd. unl e ss a revival iswitnessed here t her e:; is a dan ger of ou r Rambles - our .E.£im§:E.l object -not only becoming a secondary but an insigni fic ant one. If this were to happen or al lowe d to come a bout how cronic it woul d be, for surely we are aware tha t Ram bling is our: t rue i n t ention a s is infer red by the name Liverpool Catnolic Hamblers-A[~sociation and Holi day Guil d .•

With the res triction of RailTnay and Bus services it has become increasingly q«.o re d i fficult a s the weeks go by to draw u:p an q,ttractive pr ogramme of 'rcra l ks , and i.i..:i.s left us ·with a restricted area in which to pursue a ctively our· hiking. I refer to the Wirral peninsula and wo uld like to warn members of the dan ger of us becoming contemptuous of that country through fr equent visits to it. Furtherm ore since September the supp ort g iven to the HambleB has wan ed consi derably and the old. keen spirit for ac tivity has d isappeared a l mos t entirely: there seems to be l eft behind i n many a re grettable i ndif fe rence towards a hobby which did onc e gi ve them grea t enjoyment.

One woul d. ex:pec t that the re vi va l exp erienced on the Social side would have eng nder ed. an d her a ld.ea a similar r esult for Rambl e s but as yet there are no such visibl e signs. If an a na logy was to be dramn between the s'u:pport given to our Socj_als to tha t a fford ed the Rambles one would b e l ef t to con, jecture wh e ther tho pr os en t name is the most sui tab-le on e . I d o not int end to answer the for~go ing qu er y, but I do want to bring to your notice the fact that as members you a.re not only entitled to take :part in, but are expect ed to s upp ort the Associations various endeavqurs, which are arraneed for your pl ea sur e ~ If th e Committee is to draw up a Programme of Walks your active co-operation is absolutely n e c essary. The obstacle plac ed in our way by the curtailment of transport services can be ov er come greatly by r e sorting to Private Hire, but on such occ asions a minimum a tt endarnc i:; of 32 is r e qu ired. The fan~s which woul d be char ged on these trips woul d compare more than favotirably with Excurs ion far e s unde r norma l conditions and wi llenaETeus-:co-b'reak virtually new ground. Two attempts to orga nize such trips have been made rec8ntly bu t both provGd unsuccessful - only just over t wenty pames were g iv en in on eacn oc Gas ion. Our end eavours to pursuad8 members to t ake par t in them were in some cas es met with imd!_gnan t refusals~

This a ttitude has ne v er be for e crept into our midst and by this lack of enthusiasm many a r e not co-operating as t.h ey should, nor a:.re they fulfilling an obliga tion which r est s upon them a s members. Th.ey are in ef f ect ~reventing the Ass oci a tion from carrying on its ma~n · obj ect an~ a re pre ven ting the Committee from doing justice to its .· offic e . The eff ici ent functioni ng of th o Ass ociation and its a im to provide recreation for you and your fell~¥ members needs your energetic and unselfish c o-op eration, Do consider your f e llows, and do l e t · us see a re turn to the old sp i r it of Ham bling.
