Ceremony recognizes 2015-2016 Leadership Excellence graduatesAnother group of members have completed Leadership Excellence, a nine-month leadership course led by Ray Mickevicius. Become a Youth Apprenticeship Employer Work-site The Youth Apprenticeship (YA) program, facilitated through Northcentral Technical College (NTC), is a rigorous elective statewide program for juniors and seniors in high school that combines academic and technical instruction with mentored, paid, on-the-job learning that makes a real world connection for students.
Youth Apprentices work a minimum of 450 hours at their YA work-site each year of their program and take related high school or college classes to enhance their work-site experiences.

It's been a great opportunity for us.

The Youth Apprentice program has been a great partnership with NTC and the different school districts. We have had great success with the students we mentored, and it gave them a real life learning experience which is extremely valuable. It also helped our organization by providing some extra help, and a mentoring experience for the full time employees. This program provides students experience that they will be able to use either furthering their education or going out into the job market.

DC Everest High School student Laney Hughes was named a finalist in the eighth annual Young Entrepreneurs Academy’s Saunders Scholars Competition and is preparing to travel to Washington, DC to compete for up to $40,000 in college scholarship funding and business prize packages.
Hughes was selected from among 90 teams nationally who pitched their business ideas in a ‘Shark Tank’-style event on Friday, May 6 at the Rochester Institute
of Technology in Rochester, NY.The national finals will take place on Monday, June 13 at America’s Small Business Summit sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Sam’s Club in Washington, DC.Hughes, CEO, Shallocat, a fashion line that produces a variety of clothing items and accessories that are based
off Laney’s original designs. Hughes is a sophomore at D.C. Everest Senior High School, and represents the DC Everest YEA! class hosted by the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce in Wisconsin.“It is truly inspirational to watch our future leaders put their learning into action as they launch their own, real businesses and pitch their business plans to the region’s top executive leaders,” said Gayle Jagel, founder and CEO of YEA! “We are so proud of each and every student.”110 of the best and brightest YEA! students ages 11 to 18 from across the United States had three minutes to present their business ideas and plans to a public audience and a panel of executive judges. On March 22, 2016, a class of 13 young entrepreneurs from the DC Everest Senior High School received more than $5,000 at an Investor Panel event held in Wausau. Hughes was joined at the event by classmates Tim Cornish, Derek Dallmann, Quinten Eberhardy,
Konnor Fierek, Isaac Frieders, Alexis Jaeger, Caleb Koppa, Lukas Lindner, Krupaa Patel, Logan Sparks, Ethan Stroik and Ben Weller. Videos of each of their presentations can be viewed on the Chamber’s YouTube channel.The competition is open to the public and will be held at noon, June 13 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, 2500 Calvert Street NW, Washington, DC. Tickets to the pitch competition lunch are available for $50. Call 585-272-3535 to register.DC Everest and the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce have committed to running this program until at least 2018, but its long-term success lies largely with our local business community, whose engagement is critical. Volunteers and financial supporters are currently being sought to complete this year’s activities and begin preparations to launch the 2016-17 program. Member NewsAbbyBank and Fidelity National Bank in Medford have entered into a Purchase of Assets and Assumption of Liabilities Agreement that will result in AbbyBank acquiring the assets and assuming the liabilities of Fidelity National Bank. The transaction will increase AbbyBank’s total assets approximately $85 million, to approximately $421 million. Following the transaction, and upon receiving regulatory approval, each of Fidelity National’s current branch locations, one in Medford and the other in Appleton will be operated as branches of AbbyBank. “AbbyBank looks forward to the opportunity to provide Fidelity National’s customers the outstanding products and services that AbbyBank’s customers have enjoyed since its inception in 1968.” said Patrick McCrackin, AbbyBank’s President and Chief Executive Officer.
The First Annual Central Wisconsin Metal Manufacturer’s Career Fair was held on May 9 at North Central Technical College in Wausau. Anyone with an interest or background in engineering, machining, welding, fabrication, general labor, office/administrative, accounting or looking for new career opportunities was encouraged to attend. “This is the first ever business lead career fair and over 30 regional companies will be on hand seeking skilled talent, to address the current workforce shortage. We have collectively over 200 positions ranging from executive to entry level and are hoping for a great turnout.” said John Peterson, President/CEO at Schuette Metals and Chair of CWIMMA. The Central Wisconsin Manufacturer’s Alliance (CWIMMA) is a Business lead initiative created by industry leaders four years ago to address the current workforce shortage in North Central Wisconsin. CWIMMA is comprised of over 40 regional manufacturers’ dedicated to promoting educational and career opportunities in the welding, fabricating and machining trades. Last year, an independent needs assessment of CWIMMA members indicated a base minimum need of 1,559 skilled workers of the next years to meet projected industry demand. Companies that will be on hand looking for skilled talent include: Wausau Window & Wall Systems, Greenheck, Crystal Finishing Systems, Merrill Iron and Steel, Norlen Inc and Linetec. The Central Wisconsin Water Ski Show Team’s Lake Dubay site was the site of vandalism and theft recently. The team gathered to clean, fix and replace the vandalized and stolen items to get the site ready for their first show on Lake Dubay on June 2

The Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin is governed by a 15-member volunteer board, elected to strategically invest the gifts of our donors, direct disbursements of the Foundation’s assets, and plan for the community’s long-term good. Serving for a second term as president of the board is Jamie Schaefer of Ruder Ware. He is joined on the Foundation’s executive committee by Dennis DeLoye of BMO Harris Bank as vice president; Cari Logemann of Aspirus as secretary and Fred Lundin of KerberRose SC as treasurer. Newly elected board members include Maysee Yang Herr, associate professor at the School of Education at UW-Stevens Point; Geoffrey Huys, director of public relations and communications at Ministry Health Care and Chris Pfender, CPA/vice president of risk management at Peoples State Bank. These individuals will serve a three-year term and join current board members: Dan Danson, Steven Immel, Mary Jo Johnson, Jim Kemerling, Amy Plier, Mary Nell Reif, Phil Valitchka and Randy Verhasselt. Completing their term on the board of directors are Scott Doescher, Polly James, and Hugh Jones. The Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin is a nonprofit community corporation, created by and for the people of north central Wisconsin, and exists to enhance the quality of the greater Wausau area.

Keller Inc will design and build a 10,000 square foot gymnastics facility for Carousel Gymnastics in Waupaca under the direction of project manager, Vern Nystrom and architect, Rob Lindstrom. Keller Inc has offices in Wausau, Milwaukee, Madison and the Fox Cities. They specialize in new construction, remodel, retrofit and reroof projects.
Kevin Hermening, CEO of Hermening Financial Group, has accepted a five-year appointment to the First Allied Securities, Inc. Chairman’s Emeritus Council. Kevin and his fellow council members will provide advice to First Allied executive management on a wide variety of topics. The council also is responsible for helping define Representative Advisory Council objectives and provides oversight of
membership. Hermening leads offices based in Eau Claire, Manitowoc, Stevens Point, Wausau and Wisconsin Rapids. He is a specialist for several retirement programs, holds Certified Financial Planner and Certified Wealth Strategist designations, and serves as an active member of the Financial Services Institute.

The informational kiosks along Third Street in downtown Wausau have a new look thanks to organizers at Wausau River District. The new kiosk maps are designed by Adrenalign Marketing and sponsored by Compass Properties, CoVantage Credit Union, Eastbay, Frontier Communications, the Salvation Army, Center for Visual Arts, Grand Theater, Marathon County Historical Society, Wisconsin Woodchucks and Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. The maps are color-coded by use of property. The maps depict the approximately 34 block area of downtown spanning the east and west sides of the Wisconsin River known as the River District. “We’re beyond excited for this update,” said Elizabeth Field, executive director of Wausau River District. “These new, bright, colorful, maps are going to make navigating the River District easier with updated storefront listings and a birds-eye view that’s similar to something you see on your phone.”

Wausau School District teachers John Kozlovich of the Wausau Engineering & Global Leadership Academy and Christine Kadonsky of Wausau West High School recently presented at the Wisconsin Council for the Social Studies Conference in Madison. Kozlovich presented a session entitled ‘Problematizing the Past: Building Debate, Deliberation, and Moral Dilemmas into the Social Studies Curriculum.’ Kadonsky, who serves on the WCSS Executive Board, presented ‘Summer Professional Development Opportunities.’

E3YP invites young professionals to begin their summer with a night of food, friends and fun at the Sawmill Brewing Company in Merrill. This ‘On the Move’ event is planned for Wednesday, June 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Sawmill Brewing Company is located at 1110 East 10th Street in Merrill. E3YP is a young professional group created by the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce as a workforce development initiative.This event will include a welcome from the owner of the Sawmill Brewing Company and a brief introduction to craft beer brewing, as well as catered food and drink specials. The Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce and the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce announced a cooperative expansion of the E3YP initiative on April 20. Member businesses of the Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce are now
able to take advantage of reduced E3YP membership rates and more diverse networking opportunities with young professionals in the greater Wausau region.
