A message from the presidentThis being my fi rst year as

President/CEO of the Crowley Chamber of Commerce I am excited and honored to lead a group that has progressed and grown by leaps and bounds under the guidance of my predecessor Kayla Link. And yes, I realize I have some big shoes to fi ll. I am committed to seeing the growth that the Chamber experienced under Kayla continue and am extremely confi dent that we will continue to move forward and succeed. My confi dence is bolstered by the fact that I am working with such a strong team that works so well together it makes my job easier. However, I realize that

I am still in the learning process and am looking forward to gaining a full understanding of everything the job entails.

My fi rst year working with the Chamber of Commerce has proven to be anything but dull. Immediately, I was astonished with the many opportunities the Chamber offers to it’s members. We have invited businesses to network, learn, and grow and to help new businesses become acquainted with Crowley. I was impressed with the Board of Directors. This group of business leaders spent countless hours volunteering their time with the Chamber. Under the

direction of such a great group, the Chamber is able to function and grow as an organization. Lastly, my fondness of the city that I reside in has grown beyond my imagination. I am proud and honored to represent Crowley throughout our region.

The road ahead looks more exciting than the one before. As our membership grows to 250 and our events are becoming larger, the Chamber continues to be the

Thibodeaux excited, honored to be leading the Crowley Chamber of Commerce

CONGRATULATIONS and a Great Big Salute to the

“Where Life is Rice and Easy”

CROWLEY – On Tuesday, February 15 tenth and twelfth grade students from every high school in Acadia Parish visited the Rice Festival Building in Crowley for the annual Career Connections Expo.

The event is held each year to give the students a chance to learn about various occupations they may want to pursue as well as a chance to visit the event’s Reality Store, where they were able to learn about the realities of living expenses and how they relate to quality of life.

Chamber hosted Career Connections Expo

THE POST-SIGNAL /Howell DennisBrittany Hebert of Iota High School concentrates hard as she draws a butterfly at the Crowley Art Association’s booth during the Career Connections Expo at the Rice Festival Building Tuesday morning. Tenth and twelfth grade students from every high school in Acadia Parish were on hand to learn about area businesses and to get a dose of how life will be after they are no longer in school.

“This is an opportunity for the kids to prepare for their futures by educating themselves on their options,” said Kalya Link of the Crowley Chamber of Commerce. “It also gives them a chance to get to know our parish leaders.”

Each business that took part in the Expo had a booth where a representative would take time to explain to students how their businesses operated and the necessary skills that are involved. Among the more entertaining booths were the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Offi ce’s where Lieutenant Keith Latiola jokingly looked for volunteers to be tasered - there were no takers; the Crowley Art Association’s booth where students were encouraged to paint butterfl ies on poster boards; and Acadian Technical College booth where students were given demonstrations on welding as well as an opportunity to tour the truck simulator in which truck drivers are trained.

“It’s great to see all this community support and the concern they have in teaching students about the realities they face when they get out of school,” said Acadia Parish School Superintendent John E. Bourque. “It makes those of us at the school board offi ce feel good.”

CROWLEY - The Board of Directors of the Crowley Chamber of Commerce proudly announced the selection of Mr. Mark Cullen as the 2011 Business Person of the Year.

Mr. Cullen founded Compass Health in May of 1998 as an outpatient com-munity mental health center located in Kaplan. With only three employees and less than one year later, the second location, a mental health rehabilita-tion agency, was opened in Crowley. Following these two locations, in early 2000, Mr. Cullen’s team organized and launched the company’s fi rst inpatient unit in Kaplan.

In 2002, with three inpatient units and three outpatient units, Cullen consolidated the company’s billing, fi nance, and marketing operations to form one home offi ce in Crowley. This fi rst home offi ce location was estab-lished by renting an offi ce space on the second fl oor, above Gremillion’s Drug

Store on North Parkerson Avenue. Compass Health has since seen

incredible growth. Over the past three years, they have experienced an 89% growth rate and employ of over 450 staff members. The annual payroll sys-tems of Compass account for more than $12.5 million dollars, with 108 employ-ees and $3.25 million dollars in wages located within Acadia Parish. Today, their facilities include eight inpatient psychiatric hospital units totaling 105 hospital beds and 14 outpatient mental health programs.

Originally based in Acadia and Vermilion parishes, the company has expanded their service region to include the metro areas of Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Houma, Lafayette, and Lake Charles. Cullen takes special pride in working closely in partnership with community hospitals in Bunkie, Church Point, Kaplan, Opelousas and Natchi-toches. Additionally, the company

owns and operates psychiatric hospitals in Crowley and Jennings plus a large outpatient facility in Mamou as part of its psychiatric health system. In 2010, Compass opened traditional, by ap-pointment, outpatient psychiatric clinics in Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Crowley, Kaplan, Jennings, Lafayette and Lake Charles to meet the growing consumer demands for less intensive psychiatric services such as individual counseling or occasional medication management.

Whether the Affordable Care Act of 2010 is struck down by the Supreme Court or not, Cullen believes the health-care industry is entering a more volatile period with ever increasing government regulations. Therefore, the company remains highly focused on regulatory compliance and providing high qual-ity clinical programs with integrity, skill, and innovation. By emphasizing

customer satisfaction in all endeavors among patients, their families, and healthcare leaders, Cullen predicts Compass Health will carefully continue expanding services as needed to meet the needs of mental health consumers and community hospitals close to home and across Louisiana.

Mr. Cullen is married to Lynn Faulk Cullen where, together, they reside in Crowley and have four children: Kath-erine, Alyssa, Ross and Jon Austin. A native of Bunkie, he attended Louisiana State University at Alexandria and is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

An active member of the commu-nity, Cullen is a member and past Presi-dent of the Crowley Kiwanis Club and a member of St. Michael’s Church. He is also a member of the National As-sociation of Psychiatric Health Systems Committee of Behavioral Health Sys-tems within General Health Systems

and a board member of the National Association of Behavioral Health. He also supports the local chapter of Ducks Unlimited and CCA Louisiana Chapters.

As a member of the Crowley Cham-ber of Commerce, Compass Health has been a major supporter of the Acadia Parish Health Fair where they were a sponsor and volunteered their time. They have also supported other Cham-ber events such as the Annual Golf Classic, Gumbo Cook-Off, and Annual Banquet. Mr. Cullen and his employ-ees frequently attend the Chamber’s Network at Noon events and Business After Hours, in addition to other annual events.

Please mark your calendars to join us on Thursday, May 26 for the Cham-ber’s Annual Banquet, where Mr. Mark Cullen will be honored as the 2011 Business Person of the Year.

BUSINESSMAN: premier business organization in our community. I am thrilled with my new position, and I am excited to serve this great organization as President. With three new members joining Board of Directors, I anticipate another exciting year for 2011-12.

There are many great reasons to join the Chamber of Commerce. Networking and making new business contacts can help your business grow. With 250 members representing thousands of area employees, the Chamber represents as a strong voice for our business community. The Chamber gets numerous calls and e-mails requesting the names of local companies who provide products and services, and the Chamber makes various referrals on behalf of our member companies. We also provide unique opportunities to member companies to advertise their products and services. Our new website will

provide advertising capabilities, in addition to the many sponsorship opportunities offered through our events. We are your representative on the local, regional, state and national level. With representation monthly at local governmental agencies, the Chamber provides advocacy on behalf of its businesses and continues to stay current on ongoing legislative issues affecting the business community. In short, we try to stay on top of things and make sure our membership is aware of any issues that may affect them or their customers.

Again I want to say what an honor it is to be the President/CEO of the Crowley Chamber of Commerce. I assure each and every one of you that my commitment to my new position is solid and I look forward to working with the business leaders and citizens of Crowley.

CROWLEY - The Board of Directors of the Crowley Chamber of Commerce has announced the selection of Mrs. Mary Zaunbrecher as the 2011 Humanitarian of the Year.

Mary Zaunbrecher is originally from New Iberia and the daughter of Jerry and Harriet Shea. She is a graduate of Mt. Carmel High School in New Iberia and earned her Bachelor of Science in physical education and math from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. She went on to complete her master’s degree in Education, also from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. Mary has been married to Russell Zaunbrecher for the past 34 years. Together, they have four children: Erin, who is married to Mike Bass, Margaret, Nicholas and Richard.

Teaching for 17 years, Mary began her career in education as a graduate assistant at USL in physical education. She then taught math and physical education at Ascension Catholic High School in

Donaldsonville as well as math and P.E. at Cathedral-Carmel High School in Lafayette. Mary fi nished her teaching career at St. Michael’s Elementary and Notre Dame High School in Crowley. During her time at Notre Dame, she was a sponsor of the Dollar and Sense Club. Even after educating in the schools, Mary continued her passion for teaching by tutoring students of all ages and levels in the area of math.

Her faith is something to be noted; she has been a member of St. Michael’s Church since 1978, where she has served as a Eucharistic Minister and CCD teacher.

After retiring from her teaching career, Mary worked with non-profi t organizations for several years. Volunteering through AmeriCorps and working with United Way of Acadiana in Vermilion Parish in the time after Hurricane Rita, she distributed and oversaw the grant funds in the form of construction materials

to homeowners during the time of restoration. She also supervised AmeriCorps teams of college students. Mary continued to assist in the rebuilding of homes in Vermilion and Lake Charles which were damaged by Hurricane Rita.

Mary’s philanthropic work continued through her time spent volunteering at Miss Helen’s Soup Kitchen. She is also a past board member of Hospice Foundation of Acadiana and participated in the United Way of Acadiana’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library Book Drive in Crowley.

She has served as president of both Charter ’67 Federated Club and Solitic Club, in addition to chairman of Christmas in April, also known as Rebuilding Together. Through Rebuilding Together, Mary has assisted in organizing the collaboration of clubs and groups who helped the needy by rebuilding and repairing over 100 homes throughout the City of Crowley.

Mary’s continuous work with the Community Development Corporation’s Welcome House Project has been extraordinary. She served as volunteer coordinator, where she assumed the role

of coordinating teams of volunteers who came from local and far away. Volunteers who came to help from out-of-state locations were assisted by Mary in finding accommodations and were prepared meals. Her role in the Welcome House Project also included grant writing and fundraising. Her grant writing has secured four grants and applied for many more. She has been instrumental in planning fundraising dinners, which have provided much needed funds for the project. She developed the “Adopt-a-Room” program, which has facilitated donations of furnishings and appliances for the newly constructed homeless shelter. Her endless work also included taking phone calls at all hours, cooking, sweeping, painting, interior decoration and landscaping, all while connecting with the residents of the Welcome House Project. She was recently elected to serve on the Community Outreach Board of Directors.

An active member in the Crowley Rotary Club, Mary has served as secretary and treasurer on the Board of Directors. Through Rotary, she has chaired the Community Service committee, where she has helped to prepare and distribute Christmas baskets. She assisted in supplying food for the Food Net at the Crowley Christian Cares Center. She provided support for Rotary’s youth clubs such as the Interact Clubs at Notre Dame, Crowley High and Northside

High. She has also offered assistance with Rotaract of LSUE and Acadiana Technical College; Early Act at Ross Elementary; and Youth Act at Crowley Middle, Armstrong and St. Michael’s Elementary.

Mary’s work with the chamber of Commerce includes participating in the Annual Keep it Clean, Keep it Green, citywide clean-up effort. She also volunteers for the annual Career Expo for high school students.

In her spare time, Mary has enjoys walking, swimming, camping and gardening. She also enjoys spending time with her family, reading and sharing her faith in small groups.

In receiving three compelling letters of support of her nomination, Mary can be described as unpretentious, modest and humble. It was also described that without her help the Welcome House Project would not have been possible. The Crowley Chamber of Commerce is greatly honored to announce Mrs. Mary Zaunbrecher as our 2011 Humanitarian of the Year.

Please join us on Thursday, May 26 for the Chamber’s Annual Banquet, where Mary Zaunbrecher will be honored as the 2011 Humanitarian of the Year. The Chamber will also recognize the Business Person of the Year, the Outstanding Young Citizens and the Chamber’s Board of Directors.
