Today we are going learn about how mass and weight are related.

Page 4: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

How are mass and weight related?

Page 5: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

Mass and weight are related but they are not the same. They are

two measures for an object.

Page 6: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

Mass is a physical characteristic of matter. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Different

objects have different amounts of mass.

Page 7: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

What is matter?

Weight is another physical property. Weight and mass are not the same thing. Weight is how hard gravity is

pulling on an object.

Page 10: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

While the mass of an object can stay constant depending where you measure it, it’s weight can

change.

Weight is the pull of gravity on an object. The closer an object is to

the center of gravity the more it is going to weigh.

Page 13: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

Gravity is dependent on the size of an object. The bigger the object

the greater the gravitational pull.

Page 14: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

The weight of a person on Earth is much greater than the same

person on the moon because the gravitational pull on the moon is

much less.

Page 16: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

We weigh only 1/6th of our weight on the moon because the Moon is

1/6th of the Earth’s size.

Page 17: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

Even though the persons weight changes, the mass stays the same. Mass is not affected by gravitational pull.

Page 19: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

Mass will not change unless you add more mass to an object or

take more mass away.

Page 20: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

Mass will remain the same whether we are on the moon, the Earth or

anywhere.

Page 21: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

The confusing thing is that when people talk about how much they

weigh, they really are saying how

much mass they have.

Page 22: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

When someone says they have gained weight, they technically have gained mass. Mass of a

person changes depending on what they eat or how much

exercise they get.

Page 23: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

Weight will change when the gravitational pull changes.

Page 24: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

Mass is measured in Grams and Kilograms.

Page 25: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

We measure weight by Newtons.

In our next lesson we will see how matter can be changed into

different properties.

Page 29: Change in Weight Lesson 11. In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

We will also learn to describe the different changes that take place

in matter.
