How can energy change?

• Energy– The ability to cause

change or to do work

Page 3: Changing Energy Forms. How can energy change? Energy –The ability to cause change or to do work

Two forms of energy

• Kinetic– energy due to

movement

• Potential– Energy of resting

objects

Other forms of energy• Chemical – stored in chemical bonds (ex- leaf)• Mechanical – energy due to movement or position (ex –

lever lifting a load)• Nuclear – energy from nuclear reactions (ex - sun)• Thermal – energy of heat (ex – YOU think of something

that gets hot!)• Electrical – energy due to the movement of electrons

(electricity) (ex – YOU think of an item that uses electricity)

• Geothermal – energy from the earth (ex – a geyser)• Radiant – energy given off by another object (ex – a

space heater gives off thermal energy to the room)

Energy Changes

• Conservation of energy –– Energy is never created or destroyed it just

changes form

Electricity and Magnetism

• Electric current – is the flow of electric charge in a material

• Electric circuit – closed path along which a current can flow
