The Channel 4 and the E4 logos animate intoposition, wiping on the titleand timing information.

The URL and additional linessuch as Network Premiereexist behind the logoanimation, but are present for the entire sequence andare not wiped on.

The double-logo animationprovides a window onto asingle image. It is incorrect toput one image into the C4logo and another into the E4 logo.

When shows on bothchannels are being promoted:

Channel 4 informationfollows the usual colour rules: Programme title in black.Timing information inC4 on air blue: R-0 / G-117 / B-144

All E4 information - timingand title, is in E4 on air purple:R-109 / G-29 / B-125

All timing and titleinformation relating to bothshows should be set with thesame type size and leading. The space between the twopieces of programmeinformation should be acomplete line space in thechosen type size.

In a 4x3 frame, type ata given size will beproportionally bigger than itis in a 16x9 frame. Therefore, type size A should NEVER beused on any 4x3 panels, evenif there is space to use it.

When there is a small numberof words, the timing and titleinformation can go in type size B. Otherwise, use type size C or D.

The URL always stays in type size D.

1.1.13 Credits lozenge

The lozenge requires a non-standard type size. Thistype size - smaller than typesize D - is used on both oneand two line lozenges.

Lozenge panels are alwaysthe same size. They aredisplayed at 80% opacity.

Top right is the preferredposition but the lozenge cansit in any of the corners.

When the lozenge is on theright, the text ranges left inthe panel.

All time information is in C4on air blue: R-0 / G-117 / B-144

When the lozenge is on theleft, the text ranges right inthe panel.

Note that with this two lineURL, the letters align rightand not the forward slash.

1.1.16 Half frame and full frame product promotion

A set of templates areprovided so that flat imagesof the product’s cover can becomped into a 3dvisualisation.

The type position is the samefor both half frame and fullframe versions of the productpromotion.

The baseline is the same forthe single and double lineURL, so that the additionalline is above the standardline. When there is a two lineURL, the telephone number israised so that the standardgap between URL andtelephone number ismaintained.

In choosing the fill, ask: is thefill instantly recognisable anddoes the fill have aninteresting relationship withthe programme?

A smooth transition into thefive second endboard can beachieved by beginning the fillshot before the endboardsequence begins. In the topframe below for example, itmay advantageous to see twoseconds of the crowd shot fullframe before the endboardbegins, so that the crowd shotis used in total for sevenseconds.

A single, continuous shottends to make a betterendboard fill than a series ofedited shots.

1.2 Notes on making promo endboards

fill type AMoving or still images fromthe programme.

fill type BMoving or still images from asource other than theprogramme itself.

Promos end with a five secondlogo and type sequence. Thereare six logo animations tochoose from.

The logo animation can revealimages from the programme -fill type A or from elsewhere -fill type B.

Page 26: Channel 4 On Air Identity Style Guide

26On air identity style guide

1.2.1 Choosing promo endboard images

The mattes do not create avery big image window, soimages which are simple work best.

Images which arepredominantly one colourwork well.

Images made up of multiplesare good.

Extreme close-ups are likelyto work. If there is a focalpoint like an eye, select thebest logo animation andmake crop adjustments toreveal this detail within thelogo fill.

Page 27: Channel 4 On Air Identity Style Guide

27On air identity style guide

Avoid complex, varied images.Mid shots containing three orfour characters for exampleare unlikely to work.

White areas in image fills willnot contrast from the whitebackground and therefore thelogo will not be clear.

1.2.2 Promo endboard images to avoid

Page 28: Channel 4 On Air Identity Style Guide

28On air identity style guide

1.2.3 Fill type A - images from the programme

These Big Brother titles aremonochromatic anddistinctive. Even a croppedsection of the images areclearly identifiable.

This combination of fill andmatte produces a two stagereveal: As the logo wipesacross Dermot is revealed. When the logo resolves onlyflickering monitors are visible.

Page 29: Channel 4 On Air Identity Style Guide

29On air identity style guide

1.2.4 Fill type B - images not from the programme

When choosing still images, avoid subjects which areobviously in motion. A still ofa running horse is not good,as one wants to see itrunning. On the other hand, this still of footsteps in sandlooks good.

If one is considering fill type B, a relevant still ormoving fill may be found onthe supplied endboard fillstape, which has both still andmoving images organisedthematically.

When using a still image as afill, it can be helpful to put aslight drifting motion on theimage behind the matte. Thismight be a zoom in or zoomout, or a slight move up,down, left or right. Thesedrifts are not alwaysnecessary and should beapplied very subtly. Whendeciding in which directionthe fill image should move, the direction and pace of thelogo animation should beconsidered.

Page 30: Channel 4 On Air Identity Style Guide

1.3 Notes on making opticals

An optical is a one secondanimation which shows thenine blocks of the Channel 4logo coming together, forminga perfect 3d logo, and thenbreaking apart.

Opticals are made by choosinga logo animation matte fromthe selection provided, andcombining this with a fill. Thefill can be a moving image or astill image.

The background for opticals(the area without video fill) isalways white.

The notes about choosingpromo endboard images onpages 23-27 of this guide arealso relevant when choosingopticals images.

It is important to rememberthat the image within anoptical should be instantlyrecognisable.
