WELCOME

WELCOME to Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace for this service, and to a continuous tradition of worship that has been practised on this site for at least 800 years. This is one of the Queen’s Chapels, and as such, not a parish church.

The original chapel was founded by the Knights Hospitaller long before Cardinal Wolsey began rebuilding it in 1528. The fine vaulted ceiling, dating from 1535, was the major addition by Henry VIII. Most of the chapel furnishings date from the late 17th and early 18th century and were designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The organ (although much altered and re-built) essentially dates back to 1711 and retains not only its fine case but much original pipework.

The Chapel Royal was not originally a building but a body of priests and singers that traditionally accompanied the monarch wherever he or she went. Only later did the buildings this body used become known by that name. Today, as well as Hampton Court, there are Chapels Royal at The Tower of London, The Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy, and St James’s Palace, which is the headquarters of the Chapel Royal. Services in all of Her Majesty’s Chapels are based on those from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, and you will have been handed an Order of Service with this booklet.

The Chapel Royal has an unrivalled continued tradition of choral music. Many of the greatest English composers have worked and composed pieces in and for this place, Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons, and Purcell among them. It is, therefore, wholly appropriate that worship is enhanced by music, which now may come from the English or European choral traditions. The texts are sung in their original language, usually English or Latin.

This booklet contains the details of that music, as well as the hymns and lessons for each choral service. These are correct at the time of publication. The hymns can found in the green New English Hymnal. In a tradition begun at the start of the Great War, we always end by singing the National Anthem, asking God to send his blessings upon the Queen.

Lord, let me know mine end Maurice Greene (1696-1755)

Lord, let me know mine end, and the number of my days: that I may be

certified how long I have to live.

Behold, thou hast made my days, as it were a span long: and mine age is ev’n as nothing in respect of thee; and verily ev’ry man living is

altogether vanity.

For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain; he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them.

And now, Lord, what is my hope? Truly my hope is ev’n in thee. Hear

my prayer, O Lord, and with thine ears, consider my calling.

Hold not thy peace at my tears. O spare me a little, that I may recover my strength, before I go hence, and be no more seen.

Carl Jackson (b. 1958)

It is the day of all the year, Of all the year the one day,

When I shall see my mother dear and bring her cheer, A mothering on Sunday.

And now to fetch my wheaten cake,

To fetch it from the baker. He promised me, for mother’s sake, the best he’d bake

For me to fetch and take her.

For mother’ll come to church, you’ll see Of all the year it is the day,

‘The one,’ she’ll say, ‘That’s made for me.’ And so it be: It’s ev’ry mother’s free day.

It is the day of all the year, of all the year the one day,

And here come I, my mother dear to bring you cheer A mothering on Sunday.

Lamentation

How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people: how is she become as a widow! She that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces:

how is she become tributary! She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks:

among all her lovers, she hath none to comfort her. The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn assembly:

all her gates are desolate, and she herself is in bitterness. The Lord hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions:

her children are gone into captivity before the enemy. All they that go by clap their hands at her:

they hiss, and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem saying, ‘Is this the city that men called the perfection of beauty; the joy of the whole earth?’ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord thy God. For these things I weep: mine eye runneth down with water. From on high hath the Lord sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day. My flesh and my skin hath he made old: he hath broken my bones. He hath builded against me; and compassed me with gall and travail. He hath made me to dwell in dark places: as those that have been long dead. I am become a derision to all my people: and their song all the day. Let him give his cheek to him that smiteth him: let him be filled full with reproach. Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by:

behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow. Remember mine affliction and my misery: the wormwood and the gall. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord thy God. Remember, O Lord, what is come upon us: behold and see our reproach. The joy of our heart is ceased: our dance is turned into mourning. The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, for we have sinned. For this our heart is faint: for these things our eyes are dim. Let us search and try our ways: and turn again unto the Lord. Turn thou us unto thee, O Lord, and we shall be turned: renew our days as of old. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed: because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul: therefore will I hope in him. O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul: thou hast redeemed my life. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return unto the Lord thy God. Words arranged from The Lamentations of Jeremiah Music by Edward Bairstow by the Very Rev E M Milner-White

Morning Prayers

Philip Moore (b. 1943)

O God, early in the morning do I cry unto thee, help me to pray, and to think only of thee. I cannot pray alone. In me there is darkness, But with Thee there is light. I am lonely, but Thou leavest me not. I am feeble in heart, but Thou leavest me not. I am restless, but with Thee there is peace. In me there is bitterness, but with Thee there is patience. Thy ways are past understanding, but Thou knowest the way for me. O heav’nly Father I praise and thank Thee for the peace of the night. I praise and thank Thee for this new day. I praise and thank Thee for all Thy goodness and faithfulness throughout my life. Thou hast granted me many blessings: now let me accept tribulation from Thy hand. Thou will not lay on me more than I can bear. Thou makest all things work together for good for Thy children. Lord Jesus Christ Thou wast poor and in misery, A captive and forsaken, as I am. Thou knowest all man's distress; Thou abidest with me when all others have deserted me; Thou dost not forget me but seekest me. Thou willest that I should know Thee and turn to Thee. Lord I hear Thy call and follow Thee; Do Thou help me. Chiefly do I remember all my loved ones, my fellow prisoners and all who in this house perform their hard service. Lord have mercy, restore me to liberty, and enable me so to live now that I may answer before Thee and before the world. Lord, whatever this day may bring, Thy name be praised.

[Three prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer]

In manus tuas John Sheppard (c.1515-1558)

In manus tuas, Domine, commendo spiritum meum.

Redemisti me Domine, Deus veritatis.

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. You have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Blessed be the God and Father Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed at the last time. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Pass the time of your sojourning here in fear. Love one another with a pure heart fervently. See that ye love one another. Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away. But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. Amen.

For Judah’s Lion bursts his chains, Crushing the serpent’s head; And cries aloud through death’s domains, To wake the imprison’d dead. Devouring depths of hell their prey At his command restore; His ransom’d hosts pursue their way Where Jesus goes before. Triumphant in his glory now To him all pow’r is giv’n; To him in one communion bow All saints in earth and heav’n. Rise, heart; thy Lord is risen. Sing his praise Without delays, Who takes thee by the hand, that thou likewise With him may’st rise; That, as his death calcined thee to dust, His life may make thee gold, and much more, Just. Awake, my lute, and struggle for thy part With all thy art. The cross taught all wood to resound his name Who bore the same.
