At the beginning of November we celebrate the solemnity of All Saints or All Hallows, the festival of the Communion of Saints, of those holy men and women whom the Church commemorates on their own Saints’ Days (usually the anniversaries of their deaths), together with those whose names are unknown or have been long forgotten. Keeping All Saints’ Day started in the East, where it has always been observed on the Sunday after Pentecost, when in the West we celebrate Trinity Sunday in those years when the Eastern (Julian) Calendar coincides with the Western (Gregorian) one. The date of the 1st of November may have been chosen under the influence of the Celtic celebration of Samhain, a pagan harvest festival. The earliest mention of keeping All Saints’ Day occurs in the early ninth century Irish calendar of Saints’ Days called the Félire Óengusso, the Martyrology of Angus, Bishop of Tallaght (part of modern south Dublin). It has been the Church’s wise practice from the earliest times to superimpose a Christian festival upon a heathen one, rather than to try to prohibit the observance of non-Christian religious celebrations.

If you look at the Lessons and prayers which are provided for the last fortnight in November, you may notice that already some of the themes of Advent are anticipated. Advent once consisted of six weeks of preparation for Christmas (as it still does in the Eastern Church), parallel to the six weeks of Lent. We know that this was the case in fifth century Gaul (which then included most of northern Italy as well as all of modern France). It is, therefore, remarkable that the very conservative lectionary of the Book of Common Prayer has retained traces of that ancient Gaulish arrangement for fifteen hundred years. These traces are to be found not only in some of the Collects, Epistles and Gospels for the last two weeks before Advent, but also in some of the Lessons appointed for Matins and Evensong. The theme of those is sometimes explicitly or obliquely eschatological (that is to say, pertaining to ta eschata, ‘the Last things’: our Lord’s Second Coming, and death, judgment, hell, and heaven).

I commend to you in advance the beautiful liturgy of the First Sunday in Advent. You will enjoy music and Lessons from the Scriptures at the Choral Services on that Sunday which, I believe, will match or surpass any that you will hear at Christmas four weeks later.
