CHAPTER 3

ANALYSIS

In this chapter, the writer wants to analyze Sauron as antagonist

character and the representations of Satan in Sauron’s character. By

examining Sauron’s characters, the writer hopes to gain profound knowledge

about him as the representation of Satan.

3.1 Sauron as Antagonist Character

Antagonist is character that has tension or conflict with the main

character. It can be in the shape of human or thing (Perrine 42). In this novel

Sauron is one of antagonist character, he is one of the Maiar, Maiar is a

demigod who was sent to help the Valar (god) to take care of the middle-

world. Sauron was Morgoth subordinate. Morgoth is Valar who turned evil

and became the dark lord in the first age. Sauron is ambitious to manage the

middle-world that he becomes evil to realize it, especially after Morgoth dead.

This statement can be seen from the quotation below:

Other evils there are that may come. For Sauron, for himself but

servant or emissary. Yet it is not our part master all tides of the word,

but to do what is in us for the succor of those years wherein we are set,

uprooting the evil in the field that we know, so that those who live

after may have clean earth to ill(861).

According to the statement above, Sauron is the servant of the Margot,

but Sauron also the lieutenant that led slaves of Morgoth. He has a good

strategy and cunning to lead the slaves. So, he has devices to do something

with good strategy.

The antagonist characterization of Sauron can be seen from what he

does, when he does some think, and the explanation of the other character.

However, Sauron is antagonist when his power was coming back. In this

analysis the writer will explain the antagonist characteristics of Sauron such

us: conflict maker and evil.

3.1.1 Immoral

Sauron became the holder of the reins of power after Morgoth’s death.

Sauron make conflict anywhere, he applied his bad plan to fight his enemy

prolonged suffering. Eventually a lot of enemies to move against Sauron, as

described below, Sauron have the nature of immoral that contradictory among

the people, the authors here take two properties Sauron's most influential

among other things conflict maker and evil.

3.1.1.1 Conflict Maker

Sauron was the maker of the bloody conflict that destroys Region and

destroyed many other regions of middle earth, especially the authority of the

king Numenorean or commonly called the king Ar- Pharazon. King Ar-

Pharazon is the strongest king at that time, his authority included of a large

authority like Gondor and other place around it. So, Sauron wanted to battle

his enemy directly. But factually Sauron was lost and he became the prisoner

of king Ar – Pharazon.

The first war with King Ar-Pharazon , Sauron loses is caused by the

less armament and the lack of soldiers, Sauron is also seemingly hasty in

making decisions to battle, so that he is losing on his side. Sauron feels that

he is strong that he does not think the big power of his opponent. And then

Sauron becomes prisoner, after being the prisoner he uses his tool to enter the

territory of the kingdom Ar- Pharazon.

Because Sauron cannot beat of Ar – Pharazon through weaponry,

so that Sauron tries to get the credibility from the king, finally he is

appointed to become king’s advisor. Sauron uses craftiness to deprave and

give a bad influence to the king , Sauron has a bad plan by giving a bad

influence to society of king Ar- Pharazon, he think that by giving a bad

influence to so city of king Ar- Pharazon Sauron is easy to make conflict

than he have to battle with the king Ar-Pharazon. After giving a bad influence

to society of King Ar- Pharazon, king Ar-Pharazon lost. It can describe from

quotation below:

It reminds me of Numenor,’ said Faramir, and wondered to heart

himself speak.

‘Of Numenor?’ said Eowyn.

‘Yes, ‘said Faramir,’of the land of westerners that foundered, and of the

great dark wave climbing over the green lands and above the hills and

coming on, darkness inescapable. I often dream of it (941).

Sauron grows the seeds of conflict and takes advantage from

Numenorean, Sauron persuades of Ar-Pharazon to worship Morgoth, and

Sauron's deceit over, the king believes that the king and his people will gain

immortality then king gather strength for raising an army to attack the country

immortal, but the king and the people lost and sank in the ocean because there

is never a timeless land.

Another statement also said that Saur on like’s conflict can be read

from this explanation.

Since return to Mordor, Sauron had found it useful, he had few

servants but many slave of fear, and still its chief purpose as of lead

was to prevent escape from Mordor, thought if an enemy were so rash

as to try to enter that land secretly (880).

Sauron also attacks on several places after the return successfully

performs until the shadow of Mordor gets to Rohan, Rohan is an important

city for the enemies of Sauron as Gondor. Growing conditions does not

produce the enemy Sauron. After getting victory, Sauron started a real war to

go to Mordor as the power house. Here, he collects the power for fight his

enemy that having big power.

Sauron fight to getting peak of victory when he gets the area that is

Gondor. Gondor is the center of the enemy's rule, so that if Gondor is already

conquered, the other regions will be easy to be conquered too.

‘Hirgon I am, errand-rider of the Denethor, who bring you this token

war. Gondor is in great need. Often the Rohirrim have aided us, but

Lord Denethor asks for all your strength and all my speed maybe

(781).

In the quote above, territory of Gondor began to collapse because of

the war against of Sauron and his slaves, as lead of Gondor, Denethor Start

fear and asked for help from the knights to prevent strength of Sauron entry

into Gondor. In the last battle to seize Gondor, Sauron finally got the victory,

Sauron is pleased what has been achieved, but the victory does not last long.

So, Sauron soon gathers strength and makes alliances.

There are two major forces used by the enemies of Sauron. The first

resistance led by Aragorn, Aragorn is a generation of official line of King of

Gondor. The second led by Frodo, Frodo is a Hobbit who inherits the Ring

from his uncle who is named Bilbo Baggins. Aragorn and Frodo choose a

different way in destroying Sauron. Aragon destroys Sauron by crushing its

allies and Frodo tries to destroy Sauron by the inherent strength of Sauron

himself.

According to explanation above, the character of antagonist’s Sauron

is shown by his way to get power of the middle-world, being mastered of

region, his cunning strategy to be the winner of war when he offers to his

subordinate doing realization of Sauron’s ambition. He tries to get what he

wants by doing something that shows the antagonist character, like making

conflict, being leader of the middle - world, getting winner of the war and etc.

3.1.2 Evil

Sauron is one of the characters that having evil character, he is the

most powerful Maiar. He becomes the forces of darkness which is the scariest.

Sauron as master of the darkness has power to develop his authority. In

developing his authority, Sauron is more cunning in set the tactics. So, his

enemy is carefully to fight him. The quotation will be shown below:

Sauron also had watched us, and has long been preparing to attack us.

He ruled Mordor from afar through Minas Morgul, where nine of his

subordinates stayed, until everything is ready (779).

In the sentence "Sauron also watching us, and has long been

preparing" this means that Sauron thinks carefully before he takes action. In

the realization his action of Sauron is helped by his slaves. In making conflict

Sauron helped by his slaves, one of the loyal slaves is the Orcs, The Orcs are

beasts with posture like a human being, sometimes like a giant, usually green

skin, a face like a pig, a monkey or a monster with long fangs, fierce and

digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id

savage nature. Orcs are loyal servant of Sauron in its mission to some areas

master. Sauron without his slaves will be difficult to create his desire. The

slaves have important rules in development of region that he wants mastering,

the region also keeps by slaves of Sauron as the master’s fort. The slaves also

deliver of Sauron’s message toward Aragorn and his friend.

Do not bandy words in your insolence with the mouth of Sauron! He

cried. Surety you crave! Sauron give none. If you sue for his clemency

you must first do his bidding. These are his terms. Take them to leave

them. (872).

Here, the mouth of Sauron has a meaning that the servants of Sauron

are also assigned as the message deliverer of Sauron to his enemy. As Sauron,

the mouth of Sauron also has a bad behavior. His mouth is popularly called as

Black Numenorean. Usually, before a war begins, Sauron sends one of his

servants, Black Numenorean to speak to the captain in the West. All have

been done by Sauron to gain a conquest.

After Sauron getting victory in the second War, Sauron goes to back to

Mordor and hides there for some time until his power back. Besides collecting

his power in Mordor, Sauron also gives evil shadow as terror to his enemy in

the Gondor, and the evil shadow also becomes a sign that will arise of Sauron

from the Mordor. It is describe in the quotation below:

Later it was noted that these thing happened even as the shadow deep

in greenwood and many evil thing reappeared, sign of arising of

Sauron. It is true that the enemies of Gondor also suffered, or they

M a ; r i f a h | 29

might have overwhelmed it in its weakness, but Sauron could wait, and

it may well be that the opening of Mordor was what he chiefly desired

(796).

Greenwood is a forest that exists in the Mordor; this forest is the place

of Sauron for restoring his power after beat king Ar-Pharazon. The shadow’s

evil starts scare in greenwood, and being the greenwood of forest to be dark

because there is spirit of evil that was there, one of the spirits of evil is

Sauron’s want to master the middle word. His evil battles his Enemy, so that

why this forest become one of the important place for Sauron to develop his

territory. In this place, Sauron often sends a black shadow to the Gondor that

want to be conquered by Sauron.

Based on explanation in above, the evil of Sauron proves that Sauron

has an antagonist character. The victory of Sauron after fighting of king Ar-

Pharazon motivates Sauron to battle the face of the enemy. Not as in previous

first wars, Sauron is hurry and he does not control to face his enemy. In the

second war Sauron waits for the right moment to return. Sauron already faces

the enemy and his strength comes back.

3.2 Sauron as representation the Satan’s characters in the novel

In essence the Satan task is to invite people to do evil and destruction,

as well as Sauron invites people to evil and damage. Satans cooperate with

each other and helping each other in doing evil, Satan and Sauron are two

creatures that are similar because both of them have a lot in common

viewpoint that invites people to create disrepute. They want to achieve the

common goal to misleading many people who do not stick to them. The

natures of the Satan’s basic belong to Sauron.

According to Islamic teaching explains that there are some antagonist

natures of Satan. So, the writer wants to represent the antagonist character of

Sauron that appear in Satan by understanding Islamic religion.

3.2.1 Arrogant

Arrogant is person is led to believe that they are in some way more

superior to everybody else (Ahmad: 7).In the war against Isildur, Sauron ever

suffered defeat but after a hundred years dead Sauron was alive again and

started preparing his power. Sauron was getting stronger and not to be failed.

His excellence made his invulnerability from fear so arrogant nature appeared.

Sauron could not be defeated and he made damage. it is stated in the quotation

below.

“The eyes in Orthanc did not through the armour of

Thedeon, but Sauron has not forgotten Isildur and the

sword of Elendil. Now in the very hour of his great designs

the heir of Isildur and sword are revealed for I showed the

blade re-forged to him. He is not so mighty yet that he is

above fear, nay, doubt even gnaws him” (763).

M a ; r i f a h | 31

This means that the nature of the arrogance of Sauron is immortal until

his death. His arrogance never separates even after getting a life and he feels

strong again. Here , Isildur is the main enemy of Sauron, in a war which is the

first Isildur ever defeat Sauron and he cut off his finger with the center his

power, in this battle, Isildur getting victory and Sauron defeat and fled in

hiding.

Now, Isildur has died, Sauron rise from his hid and he trying to control

the territory and master heritage. After Isildur dies Sauron is not afraid of

anyone and trying to undermine all his power. Arrogance of Sauron more

visible when he ordered all his slaves to worship him and ordered all his

enemies to submit to him.

According to explanation in above Sauron has nature like Satan in the

running duties and one of the main characteristics of the Satan is arrogant

condescending of the other and reject the truth.

In performing his duties, Satan also invites people to follow his orders.

If someone eludes his common from Satan and leaves the orders of his god, it

means that the person has become the servant of Satan. Meanwhile, if

someone has implemented the following orders of Satan, so Satan will tempt

people to do the evil order to other people.

Allah describes the Satan with these nature, because Satan thinks that he

is better than him (Allah). As a proof to that, he (Satan) refuses and being

digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id

M a ; r i f a h | 32

arrogant when he is commanded by Allah to prostrate to Adam. It has been

clearly said by Allah as the following statement:

"Allah Almighty says: what has kept thee from prostrating thyself

when I commanded thee?’’ Answered [Satan]:’’I am better than he:

Thou hast created me out of fire, whereas him thou hast created out of

clay.”(Al A’raf:12)

In the actual life, the pride of Satan is also presented in some people,

especially for those who already consider themselves more than others in

anything and anyhow they are. They are not doubtful to insult his fellow or

human beings. Satan destroys something which has been already well created

by Allah. In this case, Satan is said to be personally controlled huge demon

and he does not have an awareness of that.

In addition, the arrogant nature has many kinds, such us looking down

the human. Besides, the nature of Satan is immortal and cannot die. It makes

Satan more arrogant against themselves and continues to master human until

the end of their generation. The arrogance nature has myriad of kinds. One of

which is such looking down the human. It means underestimating human.

This nature same with Sauron’s character when he is faced his enemy,

pride that doing by Satan to itself bring Satan into arrogant toward the human.

In the story of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the king Satan continues to

increase the amount of his force as slaves to defeat his enemies. Moreover the

digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id

slaves who are owned Sauron will simplify to defeat the enemy. The enemy of

Sauron has given a warning to Sauron but he don’t realize it, Sauron with the

arrogance and his greedy, he sends his slaves into some areas that will be

destroyed.

In the end, it can be concluded that good things will continue to win.

Sauron will suffer destruction with his follower. As well as human, Satan will

be destroyed along with the loyal followers who do not obey with their god.

3.2.2 Terrorist

Terrorism tends to refer to an act is wrong, evil, illegitimate, illegal

and a crime (Breg and Stephen: 457). Sauron was clever authorities incite and

spread his evil influence to attract all nations into the darkness, so that his

followers are numerous. Sauron was evil, strong, hunger of power and willing

to do anything. Sauron also sacrifice anyone in order to get the one ring her

back. Sauron to getting his ring actually almost did not do anything, and

allowed his slaves to do all the dirty work.

He stood up and cast open his long black clock, and

behold! He was clad in mail beneath, and grit with along

sword, grit – hilted in Osheath of black and silver. Thus

have walked, and thus now for many years have I slept,

“he said, “lest with age the body should grow soft and

timid. ‘Yet now under lord of the Barad-dur the most fell

of all his captains is already master of your outer wall, said

Gandalf. ’King of Angmar long ago, sorcerer, ring wraith,

M a ; r i f a h | 34

Lord of Nagzul, a spear of terror in the hand of Sauron,

shadow of despair (800).

According to above statement, Sauron started to spread a terror bit by

bit, at first, the form of Sauron's terror is the black shadow. It is about the

shadows above the sky with little glittering lightning. Lightning is also a sign

which indicates the rise of Sauron with the strength and with the help of his

slaves. In this novel Bared-dur is a symbol of the power of Sauron in the

Mordor. It is about a tower built nearby the mountain of death. Barad-dur was

created to prevent the invasion and send terror to the enemy.

In the Islamic teaching, Satan is the first enemy of people. He spreads scary

by whispering bad thing in the heart of people, so people are lazy and worried

to do something. In addition to that, the scary usually comes into people who

have less strong of faith, so Satan is easy to influence. Then, the influence

appears from their mind as if the scary is fact. In the verse of Al Quran which

describes the terror is somewhat explained below.

We shall cast terror into heart s of those who disbelieve, because they

joined other in worship with Allah, for which he had sent no authority,

their abode will be the fire and how evil is the abode of damn (

polytheists and wrong –doers) ( Al –Imron:151).

The scary comes into the heart of human, depending on the level of faith that

human has. The heart of the faithful ones who have not steadfast, will

digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id

experience a fear. In this situation, in fact, he (as the one who experience a

fear), has an opportunity to move toward a deeper faith. The fear of faithful

challenges to rise, while the fear of infidels is only imprisoned.

Satan also conducts a terror to human. Human who are often

terrorized by a fear that they have is weak in faith, for example human are

afraid to poverty, so they asked to the objects that are considered having

power to give them a wealth. The object is about a symbol of the actual power

of Satan, and that the object was a tool to the collapse humanity into

polytheism.

In the novel Lord of the Ring: The Return of the King, Sauron builds

some strength symbol to terrorize the enemy. One of the most important

symbols is the tower of Barad-dur. The Tower of Barad-dur is ever

surrounded by the enemy of Sauron for seven years.

In this time, many enemies of Sauron were died. Siege as the opponent

servants of Sauron ended when Sauron emerged from Barad-dur to fight the

enemy. Satan also uses many symbols as symbols of his power. All Satan

come to whisper. The symbols that are used by Satan as a talisman, a dagger,

a large tree graves, etc. All these objects have the strength and benefits to the

members. In addition, the object is destroyed if a person is not able to protect

it.

3.2.3 Deceived

digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id

M a ; r i f a h | 36

Deceived is doing a disservice to other people by tricking (Muar 32).

The first main strength of Sauron was his ability to deceive and disguised, as

the lieutenant Sauron using his strength as a tool to find again his ring that

missing, he also committed fraud on the his enemies so that he were easy to

beat them, as quotation in the text in below:

There was a long silence, and from wall and gate no cry and sound

was heard in answer. But Sauron had already laid his plains, and he

had a mind first to play these mice cruelly before he struck to kill. So it

was that, even as the captains were about to turn away, the silence was

broken suddenly (870).

Sauron often mocks his enemies and assumes others people under his

command. The statement of sentence "he had a mind first to play reviews

these mice cruelly" Sauron assumes his enemies as mice which are easy to be

mocked. As already explained above, if Sauron loses war, his will effort to

negotiate with his enemies. He lowers himself to have sympathy from his

enemies. Sauron is an expert on deception, as has been done against the king

Ar -Pharazon. Sauron is dangerous, so the enemy Sauron very is cautious in

the face of war tactics Sauron. As the leader of the darkness, his power is very

big that he can do anything as what he wants. An overview of the nature of

Sauron is also found in the character of Satan.

Satan is so deceptive human in every way, if it is not succeed in this

way, then Satan will use other way. Satan’s way makes the use of deception

and attracts attention by whispering something beautiful and good feeling in

the end and it all ends with regret. Satan is very clever deceive of people. At

the time, Satan easily deceive people with nice, fun, and comfortable objects,

so they forgot their obligations. Satan will never be bored deceive of people.

Satan also easily deceive people with things in his like, this indicates that

Satan has a great powers capable deceive men from all directions.

Satan also deceive human in many ways with the purpose of

misleading people and it is proven that Satan really misleads people. It can be

seen from human life in today’s modern era. For example killing, and

believing to other Gods which have increasingly widespread. As explained in

the verse, Allah says:

[And] that He may admit the believing men and the believing women

to gardens beneath which rivers flow to abide therein eternally and

remove from them their misdeeds - and ever is that, in the sight of

Allah , a great attainment (Al-Fath:5)

Allah loves human who is always aware of this fact, and warned him

(human) not to prefer the life of this mortal world and replaces it with an

eternal life in hereafter. Because, if it is carried out by human, Satan will

belong to those who are deceived.

M a ; r i f a h | 38

Sauron was influenced by an ambition who wanted to get the highest

power. The influence of the evil Sauron in the form of doctrine began to

develop in society of Numenor, Sauron effect society of Numenor by way

inciting to fight against Valar. As described above, Valar was the main enemy

that was feared by the society Numenor, Valar was an immortal being who

would beat society of Numenor, so that the People Numenor was destroyed

with their kings, but all it was a story made up by Sauron himself.

Elros was the first King Numenor, and was afterwards known by the

high even name Tar-Minyatur. His descendants were long live but

mortal. Later when they become powerful begrudged the choice their

forefather, desiring the immortality within the life of the world that

was the fate of the Eldar, and murmuring against the Ban. In the way

began their rebellion which, under the evil teaching of the Sauron,

brought about Downfall of Numenor and the ruin of the ancient world,

as is told in the Akallbaeth (1011).

Sauron has already succeeded in giving a bad influence to the king of

Numenor and his society, but what Sauron says is a lie that Sauron devises.

King and society assume that they will be given a freedom after they die and

they will be stronger than ever. Other statement that can support statement in

below:

He resolves to challenge Sauron for the great in the middle earth, and

at length he himself set sail with a great navy, and landed at umbar. So

great was the mighty and splendor of the Numenoreans that Sauron

own servants deserted him, and Sauron humbled himself, doing

homage, and craving pardon. And the Ar- Pharazon folly of his pride

carried him back as prisoner to Numenor. It was not long before he had

bewitched the king and was maater of his council, and soon he had

turned the heart of all Numenoreans, except the remnant of the faithful,

back toward of darkness (1012-1013).

Ar-Pharazon as the king of Numenor destroyed by the lie of Sauron,

Sauron is briefly sailing to Valinor to seek for immortality, and Numenor was

submerged. It was lucky that his inhabitants whom were led by Elndil and his

son Isildur brought the ship and saved their life to Middle-earth, and they built

the kingdom of Gondor and Arnor.

In everyday life Satan always incites human, how Satan's hostility

toward humans by smearing each other and allow the shedding of blood. The

bad influence of Satan can damage the sense of brotherhood among people

due to a damages and divisions in society. It is a natural thing that human

cannot avoid. Bad whisper of spirit beings around us turns into minds and

hearts. A dominant whisper will shape the character and personality of a

person. They are heavily influenced by the negative whispers of Satan groups

that will tend to do something negative and bad.

So, the nature of Satan can be described in Sauron’s character. Both of

which have some similarities of bad influence among them for people around

him. After the power of Sauron comes back, he is trying to give a bad

digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id

influence, as well as Satan that he is adversely affected people who becomes

his followers, so that there arise negative behavior.

Generally, human behavior is influenced by whispers that appear in

their heart and mind. This whisper can be a bad influence which leads to the

negative thing and the prohibition to do bad things. A negative whisper

emerges from the demon that controls a heart and a mind of a person. A

dominant negative effect is strongly influenced by the mood of a person who

is concerned.

So, we have appointed for every prophet enemies, Satan among mankind and

jinn’s inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of

deception). If your Allah had so willed, they would not have done it, so leave

them alone with their fabrications (Al-An ‘am 112).

Therefore, Satan really spreads bad influence. All of these happen due to a

destiny and the will of Allah. The bad influence which is caused by Satan is

more dangerous, because of losses that cause bringing harm to others.

3.2.5 Treacherous

Treacherous is not responsible for the attitude of the trust or the trust

that has been delegated to him (Tafsir Asofyr 23). Treacherous is usually

accompanied by closing out the promise. Sauron was one of a dangerous

character, because he has a treacherous nature to get his ambition. Sauron

was treachery in the first war against King Ar-Pharazon. This war made

digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id

M a ; r i f a h | 41

Sauron defeated, and became a prisoner. During becoming a prisoner, Sauron

planned to destroy the king of Ar -Pharazon. After he was released from

prison, he tried to get his belief of king Ar -Pharazon and he was recruited as

his advisers. Sauron was cunning. Finally he made treacheries of king Ar -

Pharazon and tried to control his power. This is in accordance with the

following statement:

I am the mouth of Sauron.’But it is told that he was a renegade, who

came of the race of those that are named the Black Numenoreans for

established their dwellings in middle –earth during the years of

Sauron’s domination, and the worshipped him, being enamored of evil

(870).

Based on the quotation above, that Sauron dedicates all of his power to

get what he wants. He wants to get a middle earth. Middle earth is one of

place where elf and human are living. In this place, it is also very important to

develop Sauron’s authority, because this is the strategist place. Likewise a

picture of Satan, Satan is created by Allah to obey him, but Satan treasons and

does not obey the command of Allah. As has been described above, that Satan

always invites people to the evils, such as a treacherous nature by humans, so

human are very easy to do this action to be attached habit.

Another statement is stated that Sauron is also a deception expert; this

statement is in accordance with the following text:

But Gandalf said: this is much to demand for the delivery

of one servant: that your master should receive in exchange

digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id

what he must else high many a war to again! Or has the

field of Gondor his hope in war, so that he falls to

haggling? And if indeed we rated this prisoner so high so,

what surety have we that Sauron, the base master of

treachery, will keep his part? Where is this prisoner? Let

he is brought forth and yielded to us, and then we will

consider these demand (872).

The word of “the base master of treachery” indicates that Sauron

destroys the human race through all kinds of ways. Treachery is the main tool

used as a destroyer. So, Satan has various ways and trickery for mislead

people and it has been proven that Satan really misleads people. It can be seen

from human life in today's modern times.

In addition Satan is those who are clever in the case of duplicity to hide

bad intentions with deeds which cover it with a sweet. Generally, hypocrites

are often called as duplicity. He is the one whose heart cover a doubt, so as

not having a strong personality and do not have a sure grip. In addition, Allah

and the conditions of other religion are not believed. In everyday life, this

hypocrite is never consistent and responsible for what they do. He always

deceives people by saying what is not in accordance with his heart, doing

what he says does not correspond to what is promised and he never fulfills.

3.2.6 Lying

digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id

M a ; r i f a h | 43

Lying is a false statement made by a person with the aim of listeners

trust (Farid 23). Sauron lied to Ar-Pharazon that the King listened to the

advice of Sauron, because he felt that his life began to fade and he almost was

created by the fear of death. Valar defeated Ar-Pharazon and Sauron lied on

him that he would have an eternal life. Then, Ar-Pharazon prepared for the

war equipment, and it never created before. He was sounding the trumpet horn

after everything was ready and started sailing. It violated the prohibition of the

Velar to go to the war to seize the perennial life of the Lords of the West.

And Sauron lied to the king, declaring that everlasting life would be his

who possessed the undying Lands, and that the Ban was imposed only to

prevent the King of men from surpassing the valar. But great kings take

what is their right, ‘he said. At length Ar-Pharazon listened his counsel,

for he felt the warning of his days and was besotted by the fear death.

He prepared then the greatest armament that the world had seen and

when all was ready he sounded his trumpets and set sail and he broke

the ban of valar, going up to with war to wrest everlasting life from the

lords of west (1013).

Sauron is easier to use way of lying in destroying the enemy rather

than using the full weapons. It is evident when the first Sauron defeats the

king of Ar- Phaharazon by using a weapon. Sauron suffers a total defeat in the

first war and after Sauron becomes a confidant, he uses a lie to defeat his

enemies.

digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id

M a ; r i f a h | 44

Satan invites his followers in the destruction. Satan also easily invites

people to lie. The inherent mendacity of Satan is a tool that is easy to use for

destroying and gives a very big impact for destruction. People like to make lie

on others to be able to be called as the Satan in human form.

3.2.7 Influence of Magic

The main power of Sauron was used in controlling and defeating the

enemy. Sauron was a magic, which one of his powers was inside of the stick

and he was holding. His stick could be controlled the entire slave, territory

and the enemy of Sauron. The Sauron’s armies were forced by Sauron to

forge weapon by black magic of workshop in Mordor. It was horrible place to

make black steel. This weapon was shaped like a starving wolf's head and was

filled with a magic. Sauron with his magic also could see the movement of the

enemy from the distance. Its mean that, Sauron understand the magic

knowledge for getting more power and for control someone who want to

subject by Sauron. This is consistent with the statement below:

Another statement which state Sauron using a magic in running his

power:

I have looked in the stone of Ortanc, my friends. You have looked in

that accursed stone of wizardry! Exclaimed Gimliwith fear and

astonishment in his face. Did you say ought to – him? Even Gandalf

feared that encounter. (763)

The power of Sauron magic which is also included in the Palantir.

Palantir is a black ball that contains magical of powers. This palantir can be

read the minds of those who hold it, because there is the magical power of

Sauron inside of the Palantir. In a classification, it can be said that magic of

power Sauron stay in something exactly stick and Palantir, Sauron does not

have power to control something without helping Palantir and stick.

Magic also has various branches of the all flow coming from the Satan.

Magic is usually used for human to other people; so many people are tied with

the Satan and finally rested hearts to them, love them and are even willing to

fulfill their desires.

So, Satan in the character of Sauron has the same mission to face a

magic power to his enemy and the black magic, which are usually used to

harm people that they do not like. The magic that is used by Satan is usually

through human assistance.

3.2.8 Damned

Damned is act which resulted hardship or disaster to others people

caused a prayer or words that are pronounced someone else (Yazid 32).

Sauron with his crime and his cunning made him hated and cursed; Sauron

had made damaged everywhere and made everyone angry with him:

Get you gone, for your embassy is over and death is near to you. We

did not come here to waste words in treat thing of Sauron, faithless and

accursed still less with one of his slaves. Begonia! (872)

Nature damned of Sauron who always made his a crime and he always

hates by his enemies, designation of damned already inherent of Sauron in

this case, Sauron died in a terrible way, together with his subordinates. He

was crushed in a very hot fire, because a reply crime that has been done. The

damned nature of Sauron caused suffering to people of Gondor, that many

people were died, because his behavior. So, everyone condemned his

behavior.

Sauron is often evil in action of war, it makes people afraid and

anxious about what is done, such attacks are done at Gondor and Numenor,

people feel anxious and finally look for new territory that is more secure.

Sauron also sends a terrible event and chills, lacks the wind filled with the

sounds disturbing, a beam of light kindled in the sky, a blaze of yellow fire

behind dark barriers. The other statements that give prove that Sauron is

damned:

A light kindled in the sky, blaze of yellow fire behind dark barriers.

Pippin cowered back, afraid for moment, wondering in to what

dreadful country Gandalf was bearing him. He rubbed his eyes, and

then he saw that it was the moon rising above the eastern shadow, now

almost at the full. So the night was not yet old and for hours the dark

journey would go on. He stirred and spoke (731).

Other statement that Sauron has damned nature:

digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id

Then Isildur said to their king: Thou salt be the last king. And if the

west prove mightier than thy black master, this curse I lay upon thee

and thought years uncounted, and you shall be summoned once gain

ere the end (765).

Isildur angry and cursed of Sauron and his slaves, the slaves of Sauron

run away and does not dare to face Isildur, Sauron and his slaves will not get

peace so that their power was destroyed in the battle to came.

Anxiety is a type of disease that arises from the fear. That in the end of

the heart is difficult to determine the truth. Hearts anxious and undecided hard

to see the truth of the heart, the power of Sauron is getting bigger, it makes

people more anxious because he has destroyed several areas of anxiety caused

by the Satan, Satan will be less to judge the good and bad that eventually the

heart will hate the truth and sleaze.

It means that the bad nature of Sauron is caused by the cruel actions

and like war. Sauron likes to do a war to gain strength again, so that strength

is back. So, it is the same as Satan. Satan is the creature of Allah that is

damned. Just like Sauron, Satan wants to reproduce his manner between

Sauron and the accursed devil that has the same task for making the

destruction of the nature of his cursed.

He is an enemy of everyone and no kindness from him. Satan gives

promises to human and arouses false desires to human. Although Satan does

not promise apart a sham, during his assignment, Satan destroys human.

to turn the servant of the purposes and objectives as good as he is about to

start to doing major deed.

And the cattle, he has created them for you, in them there is warmth

(warm clothing), and numerous benefits, and of them you eat (An-Nahl

From this verse, we can know that the Satan is a creature of the

damned. Although the Qur'an has mentioned over and over, and Allah curses

Satan of all his kinds of actions, so that Satan feels entitled to do anything that

would plunge it into the gates of hell.
