NottingHill

The Hummingbird Bakery

The Lonsdale

The cosmopolitan district of Notting Hill in the Royal Borough of Kensington and

Chelsea is famous for many things notably the annual carnival and the film of the same name starring Julia Roberts. It has in recent years grown to be a fashionable area for young people and has a vibrant nightlife with some of the best music bars in London. It quite uniquely possesses a bohemian spirit within a formal and affluent setting. Its close location to the famous Portobello Road Market makes it a highly desirable place to visit for shopping as small shops and stalls selling jewellery, antiques, clothing, art and souvenirs of London line the area.

LIFE INSOUTH KENSINGTON“I HAVE LIVED IN SOUTH KENSINGTON FOR NEARLY A DECADE AND LOVED EVERY MOMENT. THE PEACE AND QUIET OF HYDE PARK ON YOUR DOOR STOP WITH MIX OF FULHAM AND KNIGHTSBRIDGE A SHORT WALK AWAY.”

SouthKensington

South Kensington’s community is a mix of families and young professionals with a variety of

nationalities including Italians and Americans. The Lycee Francais Charles de Gaulle provides language and

cultural classes, which supports the largest French community outside of France. Many of London’s famed institutions fall under South Kensington’s Exhibition Road, thus establishing

this neighbourhood as one of the most historic and visited in the entire city. The Royal Albert Hall, Natural History Museum, the V&A and the Royal College of Art are just some of the points of interest, whilst famous literary names including Beatrix Potter, Virginia Woolf and Sir J.M Barrie once called this place home.

BMW’s answer to urban electric driving has arrived in the shape of the i3. We take a closer look at the i3 credentials and what you need to know if considering electric motoring.

BMW LEADS THE CHARGE

Page 29: Chard Autumn/Winter 2013

Autumn/Winter 2013 CHARD 29

The new BMW i3 has been designed and built from the ground up to run only on electric power. So, if you are looking for emission free driving and want to say goodbye to the petrol pump, then this could be the answer. According to the BBC’s Top Gear ‘it is a remarkably good car to drive’ with a 170bhp electric motor generating 184lb ft of torque, powered by a 230kg high voltage battery that consists of eight modules, sending drive to the rear wheels. Just like with conventional BMW models this results in highly responsive steering, and provides a tight turning circle. Perfect for inner city driving.

In terms of performance the i3 can achieve 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds and has a top speed limited to 93mph. Weighing in at just 1195kg, the i3 is made predominantly from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). This material weighs 30% less than aluminium yet has the same strength as steel which is important from a safety point of view. For this reason we can expect to see much more CFRP being used in future car manufacturing.

RANGE ANXIETYWhen it comes to electric car technology the predominant concern is always that of range. The BMW i3 will run for between 80 and 100 miles, which is fine for urban city driving, but not so practical on big motorway journeys. However the mileage will increase if the Eco Pro mode is used and for even further range there is the i3 Range Extender. This model gives you an increased range of between 160 and 186 miles via a small onboard 650cc petrol engine that is used solely to recharge the battery pack. However, due to the additional weight, the 0-62mph performance drops by over half a second to 7.9 seconds.

CHARGINGThe battery can be charged from a domestic plug socket in around 8 to 10 hours, or in 3-4 hours from a public charging station. For an additional £349 BMW also offers a home charging station called

BMW i Wallbox Pure, which will charge the car from 0-80% in approximately 3 hours. The car's onboard i Navigation system with BMW ConnectedDrive fitted as standard, allows the BMW i3 to display the nearest charging stations and their availability in real time, including them in your navigation route if required.

Prices for the standard BMW i3 start at £25,680 - with the £5,000 OLEV Government grant - or £28,830 for the Range Extender. It will go on sale in November 2013, and has been available to order since August. With its innovation, style and brand kudos the BMW i3 is bound to have a positive impact on people’s perceptions of electric motoring. In fact it could well be the catalyst for a significant growth in numbers and further technological advancements down the line. Watch this space.

Bayswater borders the north of Hyde Park over Kensington Gardens and is therefore a

picturesque district and a popular spot for those touring the city. Bayswater Tube Station is the gateway for many visitors to this borough. From here a multitude of cafés, bars and restaurants can be found. This is also the most densely populated area for hotels with many of the striking stucco terraces providing tourist accommodation. A diverse community gives the place a cosmopolitan edge whilst its proximity to the Marble Arch and St Sophia’s Cathedral provides a hint of its historic past. Victorian terraces line the area with immaculate garden squares and well-kept streets making it a highly desired place to own property.

12 OF THE WORLD’S HEALTHIEST FOODS We are learning more about food everyday, what is good for us and what is not. Some foods promote weight loss whereas others increase cholesterol and heart problems. For those looking to increase their healthy food intake this useful guide will prove informative and inspirational.

SPINACHSpinach is a nutrition superfood and a good source of iron. Like other dark greens, spinach is an excellent source of beta-carotene, which helps reduce the risk of developing cataracts and fights heart disease and cancer.

GREAT AS A SALAD LEAF AND CAN BE ADDED TO SMOOTHIES.

AVOCADOSThe avocado has the highest protein and oil content of any fruit.

Don't let the high fat content put you off though; avocados contain only good monounsaturated fat, which may help to

reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

OLIVE OILThis essential ingredient of the Mediterranean diet has been shown to improve blood pressure, reduce the risk of cancer and lower cholesterol. It has also been linked with protection against Alzheimer’s Disease and is thought to help you feel fuller longer.

UNLIKE COCONUT OIL MOST OF THE

ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS ARE LOST

WHEN FRYING SO USE IT IN

DISHES AT LOW TEMPERATURES

FOR MAXIMUM BENEFIT.

DARK CHOCOLATEDark chocolate (preferably 80% cocoa solids or higher) has many surprising health merits. Weight loss, increased relaxation, younger skin, cancer protection, diabetes control and improved mood are just some of the many benefits associated with dark chocolate.

FLAXSEEDReferred to as one of the most powerful foods on the planet, flaxseed's health benefits come from the fact that it's high in fibre and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as phytochemicals called lignans. It is commonly used to improve digestive health and is thought to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease.

FLAXSEED CAN BE SPRINKLED

OVER YOGHURTS AND

SMOOTHIES OR

USED IN BAKING

AND COOKING.

QUINOAUnlike wheat or rice, quinoa is a complete protein - containing all eight of the essential amino acids. Quinoa is recognised by the United Nations as a supercrop due to its health benefits.

YOU CAN USE IT AS AN ALTERNATIVE

TO RICE OR IN BREAKFAST CEREALS.

ALMONDSAlmonds are low in saturated fat and contain many other protective nutrients. These include calcium, magnesium, vitamin E and phytochemicals, which may help protect against cardiovascular disease and even cancer.

TRY ALMOND BUTTER ON YOUR

TOAST OR SPRINKLE SOME

ALMONDS ON A CHICKEN SALAD.

BLUEBERRIESBlueberries (preferably wild) have significant health benefits and can help with ageing. Packed with phytochemicals such as anthocyanin, their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties are thought to protect against diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s.

AS WELL AS AN INGREDIENT IN SMOOTHIES BLUEBERRIES

CAN BE A VERSATILE ACCOMPANIMENT

IN SAVOURY DISHES.

COCONUT OILVirgin coconut oil is a great source of lauric acid, which enhances the immune system through its antiviral and antibacterial effects. These acids also stimulate metabolism, and evidence suggests they can help you lose weight.

COCONUT OIL IS PROBABLY THE

HEALTHIEST OIL YOU CAN USE IN

FRYING AND IT CAN TRANSFORM

DULL DISHES.

KALEThis leafy green is a nutritional powerhouse with health benefits primarily linked to the high concentration of antioxidant vitamins A, C, and K and sulphur-containing phytonutrients. Eating a diet rich in vitamin K can reduce the overall risk of developing cancer.

YOU CAN ENJOY KALE IN A SALAD OR AS A

GREAT ADDITION TO A STIR FRY.

GREEK YOGHURTLike all yogurts, Greek Yoghurt is an excellent source of calcium, potassium, protein, zinc, and vitamins B6 and B12. In addition, it contains probiotic cultures and is lower in lactose and has twice the protein content of regular yogurts, which helps you feel fuller longer.

TRY GREEK YOGHURT WITH BERRIES

AND NUTS FOR BREAKFAST AND

START YOUR DAY AS YOU MEAN TO

GO ON.

SWEET POTATOESSweet potatoes are high in nutrients and one of the best vegetables you can eat. Not only are they a great source of beta carotene, vitamin C, fibre, and potassium, but this underrated vegetable is very tasty and low in calories.
