Gen Charles de Gaulle declares he is once again at the disposal of France to bring order out of chaos and says he won’t be a dictator if he is brought to power. The country’s next steps are uncertain. Premier Pflimlin’s government isn’t as stable as it could be and could fall. He is about to ask the National Assembly for an extension of emergency powers to counter the nationalist uprising in Algeria. His regime could collapse on a test of their confidence.

The French government goes into crisis mode and pleads for emergency police powers to deal with riots, chaos and uprisings on behalf of Gen Charles de Gaulle, who offers to take over full power and attempt to lead France out of its gravest crisis since World War II. In Algiers - French military command and European civilians take over the Algerian government and pledge to return De Gaulle to power.

Vice-President Richard Nixon and wife Pat narrowly escape death or serious injury in Caracas, Venezuela after a frenzied-mob surrounds and smashes his car including the windows - all as police watched indifferently for 12 minutes. The U.S. dispatches two companies of marines and two companies of paratroopers to U.S. Caribbean bases if necessary to protect the Vice-President. Earlier, Nixon did receive reports of Communist plans to assassinate him in Carcas - the last stop on his South American tour. The Soviet Union launches its third Sputnik satellite - the heaviest ever launched at almost a half a ton. The first Sputnik was launched in October of 1957. A giant strike threatens Paris with the appearance of Gen. Charles de Gaulle for a news conference that may spell out his terms for taking power. The strike call was issued by the Communist-led General Confederation of Labor. It asked all its members and other workers in the Seine Department (Paris area) to stage a sit-down strike at 3pm – the hour of de Gaulle’s news conference and be ready to replay en masse “in any attempt at a Fascist demonstration.”

Gen Charles de Gaulle declares he is again at the disposal of France to bring order out of chaos. He renounced any role of dictator but said he will require extraordinary powers if he takes the helm of government.

A lion snatches two-year-old Julia Ann Vogt from the grasp of her grandfather and kills her. The little girl was visiting the Washington Zoo with her grandfather. He gives this account: “I just walked down to the zoo with my two children. I had each of their hands and we walked around the cages. The older one and I looked over the left where there were some lions pacing around. The first thing I knew, the little one on my other side had ducked

through the railing and ran up to the cage. When I asked her to hold my hand, she had a habit of saying ‘I hold my own hand, granddaddy’ and that was the last thing she said. I reached over the railing to try to grab her but by that time the lion had pulled her into the cage. I tried pulling on her arm and head and I called for help, but it was too late to do anything for her. A lady stepped up to help me. Julia Ann didn’t make a sound.” Actor Peter Lawford suffers a fractured left arm in an auto collision on Sunset Blvd. A drunk driver sideswiped Lawford’s car and took off. Police caught him not far from the scene. Surgeon General Leroy E. Burney says - don’t take a chance on Polio. If you haven’t had your Salk shots, get them right now! Three shots = 90 per-cent protection. The Senate approves a postal rate hike – the 3cent stamp will soon make way to 4cents. Passing – Actor Ronald Coleman (67) In radio news - popular disc jockey Art Ford finds a new home - WNTA (970) in Newark, NJ. He’ll also serve as Program Director. He had been with New York’s WNEW (1130) for 15 years before being let go last month. “I am happiest when the garde is avant. The garde is no longer avant at WNEW.” “But any man who has any criticism after working for the same boss for fifteen years

Radio news –

Due to a riot at his rock ‘n’ roll show in Boston last week (May 3) Alan Freed and WINS part ways. WINS general manager Jock Fearnhead says that Freed’s resignation is a complete surprise and added, “In cases of this kind, the public usually assumes that a person in trouble is fired, but such was definitely not the case with Freed and WINS. The station’s position has been one of a third party, and a separate entity, because the incidents involved the non-radio activities of Mr. Freed.” Jack Carney of WIL St Louis held a

great contest tied to a unique record “533010761” by the Threeteens. Without playing the record, Carney asked listeners what they thought the title of the song meant. After 300 wrong guesses, the right answer came in. So, what is the dong about? It’s Elvis Presley’s Army serial number! Martin Block of WABC was so happy with his “Win a Date With Frank Sinatra” contest that he is currently conducting “A Day With Day,” whereby listeners may win a part in Doris Day’s new film “Miss Casey Jones.” To win, you must use the titles of seven Doris Day songs in composing an original 70-word story. Block is plugging the contest 4 times an hour. Walter Bailes says that station XERF, Del Rio Texas is about to up its power to 250,000 watts. It’s announced that Alan Freed, who resigned from WINS has been hired by WABC radio, for a local, six-nights-a-week show and it should begin June 2. It’ll air from 7:15-11:00p. Freed doesn’t have a TV deal, but WABC-TV has first take. If not, he may go to WABD-TV. Freed had been talking to WNTA, WNEW and his old station WINS before the WABC deal. Freed was just arraigned in Boston on charges lodged against him by the Suffolk County Grand Jury of inciting a riot
