took place. And so I am again reminded, we must remember the past and celebrate those who have served, and it is only then that we can begin to imagine where we will go in the future.

2 Chronicles 7:14 states, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” We as a school, as a Children’s Home, as leaders, as citizens, and as Christians, seek to do just that. We want to imagine what could be if we put God first.

AS WE BEGAN OUR 67TH SCHOOL YEAR back in August, we declared a theme of “Imagine.” We want all of you to imagine the possibilities, imagine the changes, and imagine the opportunities. We are excited about what this

school year will bring, and we look back with gratitude on the people who came before us that have helped build the School and the Home into the great entities that they are today.

One event that took place on campus recently that really made me reflect back was the September 11th Remembrance Ceremony. It has now been a decade since the planes flew into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. I know that I never imagined such a thing would happen. Speaking with some of the students after this school-wide event it dawned on me that so many were either infants or toddlers when this tragic event

Brad attended MDB for 9 years, and worked here from 1999-2007 before leaving to serve as Secondary Principal and Athletic Director at Mobile Christian School in Alabama. CHILDREN’S HOME

In recognition of Van Ingram’s numerous contributions to CH&BS, the Social Services Department has created an award in his honor. It will be presented annually to a child living in the Children’s Home who has excelled academically, exhibited outstanding behavior, and demonstrated spiritual growth.

Mr. Ingram and his wife Gloria came to CH&BS in 1966 to establish the Social Services Department. A native of Mont-gomery, AL, he received his B.S. from Lipscomb University and an M.S. in Social Work from The University of TN. The inauguration of a Social Services Department was the begin-ning of new and far reaching programs for the children and families in care at CH&BS. His first goal was to secure foster home and adoptive licenses. As director of the department, he functioned as a social worker, and also conducted case studies, intake evaluations, staff training, and counseling. Mr. Ingram served the Children’s Home for six years and went on to preach for numerous congregations in Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Van Ingram passed away on October 4, 2009. He had the rare and valuable ability to accept others as they were, even as he was helping them change. The work of this great man of God touched many lives and will carry on through the recipients of the award bearing his name.

Dontae Saliford is 14 years old and came to us from Cordele, Georgia, where he attended Crisp County High School. He moved to Mount Dora on Labor Day. He enjoys

writing music, playing video games, and reading the Harry Potter series. His favorite sports teams are all from Miami: the Heat, Dolphins, and the Hurricanes. Chuck Shepherd, Director of Social Services, says, “Dontae is a bright young man and the staff enjoy his positive and pleasant attitude.”

Anthony Padilla is 15 years old and in 9th grade. He comes to CH&BS from Mount Dora Middle School. His favorite subject is Physical Education and he enjoys sports of all kinds. He plays basketball every day after school and plans to try out for the basketball team at winter try-outs. About CH&BS he says, “I like it. I want to graduate from here.”

Jordan McPherson is 15 years old and in 9th grade. His favorite subject is math. He likes to play both basketball and football. He currently plays on the offensive line and as

linebacker for the MDB Bulldogs. Football Head Coach Stephen Cochran says, “Jordan has a great attitude and he works hard. You can tell he wants to be here.”

Dana Deree had no idea that his time at the Mount Dora Children’s Home would prepare him for a career serving his country. Dana and his two brothers, Shawn and David, came to the Children’s Home from Arkansas in the early 1980’s. He graduated from MDB in 1987 and went on to Harding University where he earned his degree in 1992. After a tour of duty in the Marine Corps, Dana was selected to work in the U.S. State Department under Condoleezza Rice in the Bush Administration. He spent time in Nicaragua as a diplomat, and now resides in Auckland, New Zealand where he serves as the U.S. Consul in the Embassy. Dana is currently looking to implement a “12 Month Travel and Work Program” between our two countries for students and recent graduates. Congratulations Dana, CH&BS salutes you!

More than 400 friends of the Mount Dora Children’s Home came to the Nashville Area Benefit Dinner on August 27. The dinner was held at the Cool Springs Marriott Hotel to accom-modate such a large crowd. Up and coming Country/West-ern artists Tay & Kate entertained the dinner guests with their musical talents. Taylor Parr, who resides in Thompson House, did a great job in sharing why she is thankful to be living in the Children’s Home. Social Worker Johnnie Coley provided one of the highlights of the evening with her interview of Marcus Woodard. Marcus and his brother and sister live with their mother in the Single Parents Opting for Christ Program. This was an insightful and heartwarming account of their life prior to coming to Mount Dora. The proceeds from the event will help fund renovations to Lugar Cottage and other projects on our campus. Thank you Nashville!

Christian Home & Bible School has been blessed by two local authors who will donate a portion of the proceeds from their books to benefit our children and families.

Cletus Stutzman has just completed a book entitled, “A Call for Abundant Living”. Cletus is a graduate of CH&BS, and has served in numerous capacities including President from 1981 - 1990. He is currently the Senior Consultant for the Home and School.

Mike O’Neal, a former NASA employee has penned, “An Angels View; Encountering God Through the Stories of the Heavenly Hosts”. Mike is now preaching for the East Orange Church of Christ, and is a highly sought after speaker around the country.

Both men have expressed their deep love and commitment to the work of CH&BS

through their generous contributions. Copies of their books may be purchased through the Development Office.

Commit Proceeds to CH&BSOne of the most hotly debated topics in politics these days is about the future of Social Security and Medicare. Where will all the money come from to pay for the next generation?

Providing for future generations at CH&BS is the purpose of Endowment. Simply put, an en-dowment program raises money for an organization to invest rather than spend. Gifts to endowment are placed in an En-dowment Fund, and the interest generated is used to meet ongoing expenses, cover capital expenditures, or fund special projects and programs (such as scholarships).

Currently, CH&BS enjoys a healthy, growing endowment due to several generous and thoughtful friends. However, the de-mands of the future are unrelenting as more and more children need our help. While twenty-first century needs will change, our mission remains unchanged. The numbers of displaced, homeless, and victimized children continues to grow astro-nomically. These young people experience exceptional chal-lenges in terms of education, health, self-image, and daily care.

It’s been said that there will be two kinds of non-profit organi-zations in the future – those that are no longer in existence, and those that are endowed. A strong endowment fund will ensure that CH&BS has a secure and stable future, built upon our 67 year heritage. Fortunately, with your help, CH&BS will still be there – ready to offer positive, Christian alternatives.

Seniors Charlie Stubbs and Matthew Hoban chose to volunteer as Teacher’s Aides in a place they are both very familiar with, the Harden Early Childhood Center. Both Charlie and Matthew began CH&BS as toddlers and are now able to give back by helping out with snacks and projects. Charlie is the top golfer on the Boys Varsity team and Matthew is a phenomenal runner, recently placing 10th out of over 100 runners at the Seffner Christian Cross Country Classic. The preschoolers love the extra attention and excitement is high whenever these young men show up to help.

This year the preschool is incorporating a new, comprehensive curriculum called WEE Learn. Several of the staff attended an all-day training and shared their information with the other teachers. Each age level teacher’s manual includes ample suggestions for using books, music, nature, and toys to illustrate Christian fundamentals while also addressing all learning areas. WEE Learn is an activity-based curriculum framework that allows children to grow and develop through

experience rather than simply listening. It recognizes that even within the age level classes all children do not learn at the same rate. Creative expression is encouraged within a familiar schedule. Bible concepts such as “Be kind to each other” and “Children obey” are posted as class rules. Daily Bible stories are related to the activity centers and other curriculum areas such as music, art, math, and science. Four year old classes will continue to use the reading curriculum OPEN COURT.

New HECC Curriculum


On Friday, September 9th the school held a remembrance ceremony for 9/11. The community was invited and in particular, Emergency Medical Staff, Firefighters, and Police Officers were honored at this event.

The Elementary School participated in this event in four ways. Essays were written in grades 2-5 about civil servants and one from every classroom was selected to be read aloud at the program. Learning Adventures (K-1st grade) prepared a song, “Red, White, and Blue,” and Allie Cockrell presented a PowerPoint based on the book September 12th: We Knew Everything Would Be All Right. Each classroom participated in a door decorating contest to reflect the theme (Congratulations to Mrs. Boress’s class, whose door was announced the winner!). All the classes who participated in the door contest then participated in an ice cream party.

The Secondary students viewed videos that recaptured the day’s events as a reminder. The Early Childhood sang patriotic songs celebrating our country.

Rosemary Cliburn, a former Elementary teacher at CH&BS, came by to visit in September and she brought a furry friend. Mrs. Bass’s third grade class is reading Rugby & Rosie, about a young boy and his dog that train a new puppy before he goes off to training to become a guide dog. Since her retirement, Mrs. Cliburn has been doing just that—working with young dogs before they go off to official Guide Dog training. The third graders enjoyed the information, interaction, and inquiry time as they saw real world examples of what they were learning in the classroom.

BIBLE SCHOOL REMEMBERS 9/11, RECOGNIZES CIVIL SERVANTS


Chace Miller is a junior at CH&BS who has been involved in many activities and sports at the Bible School; he has also been competitively racing since he was 6 years old. After being a part of the HOBY (Hugh O’Brien Youth) Leadership Conference in June, where Chace represented CH&BS, he became more inspired about community service. Chace approached Habitat

for Humanity with the idea of promoting them and their mission through his racing. His mini-stock race car has been painted with the Habitat Restore logo. During autograph sessions at New Smyrna Speedway, Chace hands out information, signs pictures, and speaks about Habitat for Humanity as a Regional Ambassador.

MDB MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL

Junior Ring Day is a long standing tradition at CH&BS. At the end of a student’s 10th grade year, they pick out a Class Ring that symbolizes their school and what activities they are involved in. At

the beginning of their Junior Year, the Junior Sponsors take them to a luncheon; this year it was held at Kiku Japanese Steakhouse. After lunch, they go to the Ring Presen tation Ceremony where Seniors hold their rings hostage until the Juniors do a task the Seniors have come up with, usually something embarrassing or funny. Examples from the past: Singing I’m a Little Tea Pot, doing the chicken dance, having to “Propose” to someone, etc… When they complete their task, they receive their class ring! Even students who didn’t order a ring still get a Ring Pop.

MDB MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL

This year-long event was started 5 years ago by Renee Todd when she became co-sponsor with Mrs. Grubbs. In this program, each senior is assigned a 6th grader; the goal is to give the 6th graders someone to be able to talk to as they adjust into middle school and they are encouraged to develop

a friendship. Each Friday they sit together in chapel, writing notes to each other, and doing a small gift swap at the holidays. 6th graders are encouraged to go the seniors’ athletic games, extracurricular activities and vice versa.

The math department is integrating technology in new ways to better help students achieve their goals. For example, a chapter in Algebra 1 that historically gives students a tough time is Factoring Polynomials. Mrs. Todd and Ms. Van Dingstee took their classes to the computer lab to use an online program in Naviance where they solved factoring problems on the com-puter and received instant feedback about how they did. If they got the answer wrong, the program showed them a tutorial on how to solve the problem correctly. Ms. Van Dingstee saw a fantastic jump in student performance as the student’s engaged in the online curriculum. “I really liked the enthusiasm that my students developed as they worked with computers to solve their equations. The enthusiasm carried over into their grades.”

With the help of the Guidance Department, the math classes will be incorporating computer based ACT/SAT prep software called Method Test Prep to help improve students’ readiness for the college entrance exams and for college level classes.

MATH AND TECHNOLOGY:

A Likely Duo?

I really liked the enthusiasm that my students developed as they

worked with computers to solve their equations. The enthusiasm carried

over into their grades.

The seniors traveled to the ropes course at Canterbury Retreat in Oviedo before school started. They had the chance to participate in a relay course, high ropes, food, and fellowship.

This year’s theme for the MDB Band’s Marching show is “Peace, Love and Rock & Roll.” The songs consist of Elvis Presley’s “Burning Love and C. C. Ryder” with a little of “2001 a Space Odyssey” thrown in. The next song is a version of Journey’s “Open Arms,” featuring Annette Miller on Trumpet and Maeghin Mueller on Euphonium. We then conclude the show with the Kansas hit “Carry On My Wayward Son.” The band consists of 43 members ranging from 7th-12th grade. We performed at the CFMAI Band Competition in Leesburg on September 24th and will perform at the Florida Bandmasters District Marching Music Performance Assessment also at Leesburg High School on November 5th. And, of course at the MDB football home games to support our mighty Bulldogs!!! (Doug Yopp, Band Director)

Erin McKay, a senior, spent the summer at an intensive four-week summer program at Ringling College of Art and Design. The goal of the program is for students to build and strengthen their visual art and design skills while gaining focus on college and career goals. Three elective college credits were awarded for this rigorous program.

Around 150 students from all over the world come to Sarasota, Florida to study under professional artists. Each branch of art had a class, from sculpting to painting to typography to 3D animation. Each student chose two “elective”

classes to take every other day, along with the core classes that all students took once a week. All the participants involved in this Pre-College Perspective were either juniors or seniors.

Core classes included 3D art, or multi-media sculpting, drawing, figure drawing, and a PhotoShop class. On the weekends there were field trips to ice-skating rinks, the beach, Ringling Museum of Art, and the Salvador Dali Museum. Erin took a drawing course where she had the opportunity to sketch live models as well as live horses. At the end of the program, all students were given critiques at a grand showing so that they will continue to improve after they have left.

Secondary Production: Musical Into the Woods

“We are very excited about this production and hopefully we will have some of the music ready to showcase at our Chicken Suppers and possibly at Chick-fil-A. We have about 30 students that will be involved with Into the Woods. The main characters will be The Baker and his wife, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, The Wolf/Cinderella’s Prince, and the Witch. It is more of an ensemble piece than it is a dominant role type of a show.” (Kevin Barker, Theatre Director)

Background: Stanley Lambchop is your normal, everyday, run-of-the-mill kid who dreams of doing something different, something amazing, something the world has never seen before. One night while he’s sleeping, the bulletin board on the wall above his bed comes loose and falls – right on top of Stanley! The next morning, Stanley wakes up flat! Not just flat…really flat. Soon he realizes that if he has to be this way, at least he is going to make the best of it. He puts himself in a big envelope and travels the world – as a human letter! In a whirlwind musical travelogue, Stanley – the ultimate pen pal – is stamped, posted and cancelled from Los Angeles, CA, to Honolulu, Hawaii, and Paris, France. (Directed by Mrs. Sarah Garback)

MDB ATHLETICS

Perhaps one of the most understated, yet victorious sports teams here at CH&BS is the girls’ golf team. This team began under the direction of Coach Jeannie Reed in 1997. Since that year the team has participated in 14 District matches, 4 Dis-trict Championships, qualified 11 times for Regionals, taken Regional Runner-Up 3 times, and has qualified for State twice (and in 2003-2004 they placed third at State). With all of the returning “letter-women” in addition to three new players the team feels as though they are State-bound yet again!

Melissa Hill, the team’s only senior, led the team last year to State along with returning “letter-women” Kelsey Clements (soph), Valentina Rodriguez (8th gr), and Brigitte Clements (7th gr). The team has welcomed two 6th graders, Julia Towne and Cooper Monn, as well as Bethany Rotti (soph) who took a year off for Color-Guard.

Girls JV Volleyball: Todd Garback wears many hats at CH&BS including Geography and PE teacher, tennis and soccer coach, and recently, JV Girls Volleyball coach. In high school he participated in cross country, wrestling, and tennis. Volleyball was not a guy’s sport in most of the places he lived (his father was in the Army), but he enjoyed playing the game against enlisted military men. In Guam, he helped out at the high school’s practices because he could help with blocking. After high school, he participated in local YMCA leagues and was able to take a course in Volleyball at UCF as an elective while he earned his degree in Education.

He says he is “really enjoying the learning experience with Mike Aponte” and “looks forward to guiding the girls in a positive direction as they experience volleyball at the school.”

Girls JV Cheerleading: Amanda VanDingstee, one of our middle school math teachers, is our new JV Cheer Coach. She has cheered for eight years herself, seven of which were at MDB. She has been part of winning squads at cheer camps held by the Universal Cheerleading Assn. (UCA). She has leadership experience with cheerleading, having been both the Varsity Basketball and Inaugural Football Cheerleading Captain. She also helps coach track during the spring.

Girls JH Cheerleading: Christy Cochran, one of our Early Childhood teachers, is our new JH Cheer Coach. She has been cheering since she was 11 years old and has cheered at both the Middle and High school levels. She brings over 5 years of coaching experience to our JH squad; 3 years as a head coach and 2 years as an assistant coach. Coach Cochran says that she is “very excited” to be working with such a fabulous group of junior high girls.

Girls Varsity Basketball: Fenny Falmagne replaces Pat Todd who has been the head coach since 2003. Mr. Falmagne is a native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was signed by the Washington Wizards in 2008. He then played with the Reading (Berkshire, England) Rockets in the English Basketball League averaging 12 points, 8.7 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and 4.0 steals. He played at what now is the State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota as a sophomore.

Girls Varsity Volleyball: We are excited to welcome Mike Aponte as Head Coach. Originally from Puerto Rico, Mr. Aponte grew up in Central Florida and received volleyball offers to play at Texas A&M and UCF. He decided to attend UCF where he played outside hitter. He previously had coached club volleyball in Orlando. “I’m here to have fun and teach the girls to the best of my ability. I’m a very nice guy, but I’m tough. I’m looking for 100% effort.”

Defensive Football Coach: Jason Thomasson has accepted the football coaching position in addition to his teaching position as the new Bible instructor. He graduated from Harding University in July 2010 and is originally from Daingerfield, TX. He was an All-State Linebacker his senior year of high school before receiving a scholarship to play at Harding University. He started for 3 years and was a Captain both his junior and senior years. He was named Academic All-Conference two consecutive years and senior year was named to the All-Conference team as a linebacker.

MDB ALUMNI

In ONE DAY Jack McDonald played 100 holes of golf at the Mount Dora Golf Club to benefit the Alumni Scholarship Fund. This Fund helps numerous young people receive a Christian education. He sent out 400+ letters to friends and family asking for sponsorships and in total, Jack raised $14,046! Jack is a 1961 alumnus and has remained an integral part of both Development and CH&BS throughout the years.

Tommy Ryals, a 1962 graduate of CH&BS, recently came to visit the school with his wife, Brenda. Tommy was a vital member of the 1961 State Championship Basketball Team, playing guard. He was the Harvest Festival King and he was also named Mr. CH&BS his senior year. He was class president and an active participant in chorus, baseball, track, and yearbook. Today, Tommy and Brenda live in Tullahoma, TN.

Christian Home & Bible School is very fortunate to have so many supporters and friends who make this ministry to children possible. As you read through the pages of each issue of Imagine magazine, I hope you will share in the excitement and enthusiasm that is prevalent on our campus.
