The Chennai Corporation will take up road widening work of 11 arterial roads in the city. For widening of road the civic body has identified 1.12 lakh sq. m. of private land and a number of notified open spaces along the route.

The civic body has prepared a land plan schedule for the purpose of acquisition Also steps has been taken in the council meet for denotification of open spaces to facilitate the work.

The civic body will be acquiring 25,179 sq. m. of private property along the 4.7 km Arcot Road stretch. The width of the road will be increased to 30.5 metre. Santhome High Road width will be increased from 18 metre to 24 metres. Sardar Patel Salai will be widened from 20 metre to 30.5 metre, after acquiring 3,286 sq. m. of private land and 18,821

sq. m. of government land. Sardar Patel Salai is 3.2-km-long.

Many parks and playgrounds in schools are also likely to be required for the road widening projects. The other roads to be widened include Nelson Manickam Road, Strahans Road, Perambur Barracks Road, Kaliamman Koil Street, Paper Mills Road and Sembium Red Hills Road. Transfer of development rights is likely to be introduced to help land owners affected by the project.

Usually my Amma prepares Avarakkai without adding onion. During my schools days, when mom is out of station, we used to have meals in "Data Udipi Hotel" in Chennai. One day, Avarakkai curry was there in the menu. After seeing that, I was totally disappointed, as I was expecting some fried stuff like Potato, Plaintain etc. But after tasting the curry, I was pleasantly surprised with the taste. I never tasted this combo before - onion, dal and coconut in Avarakkai curry, with coconut oil flavor. Since I liked the taste my Amma use to re-create their preparation in her own style. This side dish goes well any Rice Accompaniment.

Avarakkai / Broad beans - 2 cups, chopped

Channa dal - 1/4 cupGrated coconut - 4 tbsp Onion - 1, finely choppedCoconut Oil - 1 tspMustard seeds - 1/8 tsp

Urad dal - 1/4 tspChanna dal - 1/4 tspGreen chillies - 1Curry leaves - 1 sprigAsafoetida - a pinchSalt - as neededMethod: Cook Broad

beans and Channa dal (can cook in boiling water or microwave for 8 - 10 minutes) and strain the water

Add oil to the pan, and when it is hot, add the mustard seeds, urad dal and channa dal. After the dal turns light brown color, add red chillis and curry leaves. Add onion and cook till onions are translucent

Add the cooked Broad beans and channa dal to the onions and cook for 2 -3 minutes. Add coconut and saute for a minute and switch off

Swarna Suraksha campaign at Nanganallur

Inner Wheel Club of Nanganallur is launching "Swarna Suraksha" - Say No to Plastic Bags - a mega rally and signature campaign at 04.45 p.m. on 24 November. The rally will start from Jaigopal Garodia Govt. Girls' Higher Secondary School, Nanganallur and will vend through College Road, 4th Main Road ( Market Road), 6th Main Road, Lakshmi Nagar and reach the school back. A specially designed van displaying messages to say no to plastic bags will also be pressed into service. Handouts on various aspects of waste management will be distributed.

Property and Water tax in one go

Residents can now pay both property and water taxes at the designated 161 integrated centres that will come up in existing division offices of the Corporation and depot offices of Metrowater from Monday, 1 December.

Corporation of Chennai, Metro Water and ING Vysya Bank have joined hands to set up the facility to simplify the payment procedure for customers. ING Vysya Bank will sponsor manpower at the centres, which will remain open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Payment of property tax can be made by cheque or DD. Officials said receipts for the payment would be provided at the centres itself.

The existing system of property tax collection has various modes of payment, including facilitation counters in all the 15 zones and at Ripon Buildings, walk-in counters at 400 bank branches, door-to-door collection by tax collectors and online payment.

Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has proposed to introduce feeder services for Chennai Metro that is expected to become operational early next year. MTC has proposed to set up bus bays outside Metro stations between Koyambedu and Alandur in the first phase similar to that of the existing bus bay outside Chennai Central railway station.

The buses will be scheduled with increased frequency according to the arrival and departure time of trains. Passengers will not have to wait for long for the feeder service. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has identified 30 feeder routes from Koyambedu to St. Thomas Mount. These feeder routes will be connected to service interior areas from the Metro stations.

All arrangements will be made to cater the requirements of the commuters to reach their

preferred destinations. Any one mode of transport whether it is mini bus or bus or share autorickshaw is will run on the route, a senior CMRL official said.

Each four-car train will be available every 4.5 minutes during peak hours and every 15 minutes during non-peak hours carrying not less than 1000 passengers. CMRL will decide on the feeder service frequency once Metro becomes operational. It has been planned for the MTC buses to cater all the 32 Metro stations covering a minimum distance of five-km radius.

At Arumbakkam, CMBT and Ashok Nagar, share autorickshaws will serve as feeder service, in addition to mini buses. Both small and regular buses will operate as feeder services from these stations.

MTC is making all arrangements to increase the current fleet by 100 more buses to cater the needs of Metro Rail passengers.

Corporation extends trade licence period

The Chennai Corporation to benefit one lakh traders carrying out more than 550 trades has proposed to extend the term of trade licence to five years for every kind of trade in the city.

Under the new system the traders will have to pay the entire amount due for five years to the civic body in advance. The Corporation demands a no-objection certificate from landlords for renewing the licence, which has been a point of contention.

Traders who submit two photographs, a demand draft for payment of fee, the property tax bill, photograph of the commercial establishment and a self-affidavit in addition to the application, receive the licence on the same day if approved by the traders’ association.

Even though interest rates have fallen in the last few months and would continue to fall here is a select list of government banks that still offer an interest rate of 9 per cent and above on fixed deposits. There are reports that the RBI may cut rates going forward in its meeting in early December.

Allahabad Bank Fixed Deposits

Allahabad Bank is offering an interest rate of 9.05 per cent of 1,2, 3 and 4 year deposits. Other tenures attract an interest rate under 9 per cent.

Andhra Bank Fixed Deposits

Andhra Bank is offering an interest rate of 9 per cent on a one and two year deposits. Fixed Deposits above this tenure attract an interest rate of below 9 per cent.

Central Bank of India Fixed Deposits

By far the best interest rate offered by government banks in India is offered from Central Bank of India on its fixed deposits. The one and two year deposit carry an interest rate of 9.15 per cent.

Corporation Bank Fixed Deposits

Corporation Bank offers an interest rate of 9 per cent on its 2 and 3 year deposits, while for other tenures it

drops below 9 per cent.

Bank deposits is 9 per cent across various tenures ranging from 1 year to 5 years.

Indian Bank Fixed Deposits

Indian Bank is offering an interest rate of 9 per cent on its one and two year deposit. The others attract an interest rate of 8.75 per cent.

Punjab National Bank Fixed Deposits

Punjab National Bank is offering interest rates of 9 per cent for deposits of 1,2, and 3 years. Deposits beyond that attract an interest rate of less than 9 per cent.

Most of the other PSU banks like Syndicate Bank, Union Bank of India and State Bank of India are offering interest rates under 9 per cent.

K K Nagar 11th Sector Exnora and Lions Club conducted "Diabetic Awareness program" at 11th Sector Park on 9 November.

K.S. Rajendran, Advisor, 11th Sector Exnora in his speech quoted the fear prevailing among the public on diabetics and thanked Lions Club Central Chennai and Aruna Diabetic Centre for taking initiative in creating awareness on diabetics.

Ln Dr.A.Sundaram in his interaction with the participants explained that diabetes is predictable, easily detectable, preventable and controllable and its complications are avoidable provided if we understand the disease. He answered to all questions related to diabetics on food habits, exercise etc. The program was inaugurated by councilor Sri C.Subramani of division 137.

R.Govindaraj, President, Exnora Greater Chennai listed out various health programmes conducted by Exnora in various places in recent days and advised the office bearers of KK Nagar 11th Sector Exnora to chalk out the agenda for the whole year of 2015 on health and environments programmes.

Mr.K.Murugaiyan gave vote of thanks and encouraged everyone to check for diabetes periodically. At the end of the meeting one resident asked the Councilor

to eradicate mosquitoes in the area for which he responded in a lighter vein "neither mosquitoes nor diabetes can be eradicated completely, anytime soon.

The Chennai Corporation has proposed to set up modular public toilets in the neighbourhood based on four models. About 348 modular public toilets are planned for the city in first phase. By December, the corporation plans to have 99 E-toilets, 15 bio-toilets, 37 Namma toilets and 153 ‘Sara plast’ toilets for the public convenience.

In order to address the issues of present public toilets that pose a major threat to health the corporation has planned to set up modular toilets. At present at 30 places prototypes are operational and had received an overwhelming response from the public.

The civic body by this effort will put an end to wet floors, dirt around, dim lights and bad ventilation. The whole project for the city is to be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 23 crore.

These E-toilets has an in-built cleaning mechanism that ensures the facility is

ready for the next user. Once a person enters, it switches on a light, thus saving energy, and even directs the person with audio commands.

The toilets are programmed to flush 1.5 litres of water after 3 minutes of usage or 4.5 litres if usage is longer. It can also be programmed to clean the platform with a complete wash down after every 5 or 10 persons use the toilet. Bio-toilet has a bio digestor which allows the usage of the human waste and conversion of it into usable water.

A bio toilet that has been installed in Gandhi Mandapam has a bio digestor, water from which is used for gardening. Namma toilet painted green is made up of non-corrugate material which allows easy maintenance, solar lights and it has a unit for the differently-abled. The civic body focuses for well-maintained and clean toilets for the people use it without disinclination.
