Math Counting coconuts - Use

the plain tree printable, a

set of coconut manipula-

tives (i.e., brown buttons,

pompoms, construction

paper circles), and the

counting cards in this pack

to practice counting and

number recognition.

Graphing names - Use

the Name Graphing Sheet

to graph how many letters

are in the names of the

people in your family. Find

out who has the most let-

ters. Child draws family

member’s faces on the left

part of the graph.

Coconut tree game -

Race to the top of the co-

conut tree by rolling a die

and moving up the tree.

Letter patterns - Create

a variety of patterns using

magnetic letters or the

printable letters included

here. Patterns can be

based on letter name, col-

or, or case.

Magnetic letter rainbow

- Sort letters by color, and

then arrange like a rain-

bow.


LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION

Science Icy fizzy letters - Make

letters out of baking

soda, and then dissolve

them with vinegar.

Alternatively, hide

letters in balls of the

baking soda (make

them into “coconuts”).

Dissolve those with

vinegar to find hidden

letters.

Frozen letter excavation

- Freeze water and let-

ter manipulatives in a

container. Once frozen,

remove the icy tower.

Dissolve using pipettes

of water. Consider add-

ing salt, too.

Coconut 5 senses

exploration - Use all your

senses to explore

coconuts. (TF)

Coconut rolling -

Explore rolling coconuts

down different inclines.

Use real coconuts or

stand-ins (like balls or

pompoms). (TF)

Sink or float - Discuss if

coconuts float, make a

prediction, and test it

out. Use real coconuts

or coconut manipula-

tives, and letters.

Literacy Making names - Use

letter manipulatives or the

Chicka Chicka Letter

Cards to spell the names

of people in your family.

Optional: Record these

names to use later for in-

dependent practice.

Act out Chicka Chicka

Boom Boom - Use the

Palm Tree Printable or

make your own larger ver-

sion out of construction

paper. Put it in a sheet

protector and attach it to

a cookie sheet or other

magnetic surface. As you

read the story together

add each letter and act

out the story.

Emergent reader - Print

the emergent reader. Help

kids write the names of

family and friends on the

lines. Then draw a match-

ing picture of each person

on "top" of the coconut

tree.

Letter sorting - Sort letters

based on various charac-

teristics.

Paint a letter - Draw a

coconut tree outline. Add

letters to the leaves using

a white crayon. Have chil-

dren paint over the leaves

with watercolors to reveal

hidden letters.

Other Play dough invitation -

Set out brown and green

play dough, along with

magnetic letters or other

letter manipulatives. Add

large brown buttons for

“coconuts.” (TF)

Cardboard tube

coconut tree - Paint the

tube brown (or leave as is).

Add construction paper

leaves. Add letter stickers

to the tube.

Coconut tree head-

bands - Use brown and

green construction paper

to assemble a “coconut

tree” headband. Add let-

ter stickers to make it like

the tree from the book.

ABC cookie cutter

painting - Use alphabet

cookie cutters to stamp

paint on paper or card-

board tubes.

Collecting coconuts -

Use the plain palm tree

printable, a set of coconut

manipulatives (i.e., brown

buttons, pom poms, con-

struction paper circles),

and the tongs. Have kids

add or remove "coconuts"

from the palm tree.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES

These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re

meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their

own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken down by

Math

Chicka Chicka Number Cards

- Use the printable cards to ex-

plore number concepts. Children

can count, put them in numerical

order, etc. Add some brown pom-

pom “coconuts” for one-to-one

correspondence practice.

Coconut Tree Dice Game - Roll

the die and color in the appropri-

ate number on the black and

white dice game sheet. Laminate

the color version and cover the

numbers with “coconut” pom-

poms.

Literacy

Letter Sorting - Sort the

printable cards, grouping all of

the same letters together.

Coconut Tree Letter Threading

- Cut palm leaves out of green

felt. Clip a slit into each and

write a letter on them. Use a

brown piece of ribbon to act

as the tree “trunk”. Children

can thread the leaves onto

the ribbon. Refer to this post

for a similar idea.

Science

Coconut Exploration - Explore

coconuts with the 5 senses.

Record observations on paper

or in a science journal. (TF)

Smelling Bottles - Place a cot-

ton ball in the bottom of a jar.

Put a few drops of different

extracts on each cotton ball.

Make sure at least 2 are coco-

nut extract. (TF)

Sensory

Chicka Chicka Sensory Bin -

Add letter manipulatives and

brown pom pom coconuts to

the sensory material of your

choice (green rice, colored

shredded paper, sand). (TF)

Alphabet Sensory Bottles - Add

a sensory material of your

choice to a clean bottle,

along with alphabet beads or

other small letter manipula-

tives.

Block Play

How Tall Can You Make Your

Tree? - Attach letter cards to

blocks. See how tall kids can

build a letter tree before it

tumbles over. (TF)

Arts and Crafts

Watercolor Resist Coconut

Tree - Draw your own coconut

tree with letters climbing up it

(in crayon or pastels). Come

back and paint over with wa-

tercolors.

Stamp the Coconut Tree -

Give kids a black and white

palm tree printable and letter

stamps. Let them add the

ABCs and color their palm

trees. Don't forget the

coconuts.
