In this unit of work you will develop your practical and design skills. The aim of the project is to develop your knowledge and understanding of the sewing machine and Materials. You will demonstrate safe use of the sewing machine and produce a chicken beanbag toy. You will research into a variety of fabrics and demonstrate a greater understanding of fabric properties.

Assessment ObjectivesIn this project you will be assessed on how well you can:

Use the Sewing Machine safely and correctly. Research a variety of Materials. Extend your knowledge of textile production.

You have suggested 5 safety rules all specific for using the sewing machine. In addition to level 4 you have correctly completed the missing words with correct spellings.

History TimeBelow, write in different sources you could use to research who invented the sewing machine.

Sources of research

Find out who invented the sewing machine, when and where?

Fill in the gaps using the words belowThe first sewing machine was patented in____________. This machine, however, never progressed beyond the patent model stage. A French tailor, built the first practical sewing machine in ____________. An American inventor______________________________, devised the first ___________________machine about______________. Research Methods

You have suggested 2-3 sources of research and attempted to complete the history time paragraph.

You have suggested 5 sources of research and correctly identified the missing history time words In addition to level 4 you have correctly suggested the most appropriate research methods and explained which method would be the most useful.

Parts of the sewing machine

THREAD HOLDERThis is where you put the thread when winding the spool and when stitching.HAND WHEEL

This has direct contact with the needle. You must always turn the HAND WHEEL towards you.

STITCH LENGTH

Controls the length of the stitch.SELECTOR

STITCH Width

Controls the width of the stitch.

SELECTOR

PATTERN SELECTOR

Adjust for the different patterns available.TENSION DISK

Must never be touched. Balances the top and bottom threads.PICK UP LEVER

Picks up the thread from the reel to get ready for the next stitch. When starting and finishing it should always be in the highest position.NEEDLE & NEEDLE CLAMPPierces the fabric to form the stitches. Undo this to replace the needle.

PRESSURE FOOT

Holds the fabric in position when stitching.PRESSURE FOOT LEVER

Used to operate the pressure foot.BED PLATE The flat bed where you place the fabric when machining.

SPOOL WINDER

Refills the spool when empty.SPOOL & SPOOL CASEHolds the bottom thread that helps to form stitches. Hold the spool when stitching.REVERSE STITCH BUTTONReverse the feed to sew over stitches already sewn, to strengthen them.

Understanding of the Sewing machine

You have shown a basic understanding of how to use the sewing machine and you have correctly identified some of the sewing machine controls.

You have correctly identified all of the machine controls and shown a good understanding of how a sewing machine works. You have also passed your sewing machine test.In addition to level 3&4 you have consistently worked in a safe manner during practical lessons and are able to identify each part of the sewing machine correctly.

EvaluationOnce you have completed your chicken you must evaluate it by discussing the best and worst parts of your final product.

Use sewing machine safely and correctly

You have used a range of tools with some accuracy to cut and prepare your chicken sample. You have demonstrated a basic understanding of safety and have produced your chicken with some straight lines and corners.

You have also worked safely when producing your chicken sample. You have paid attention to how your chicken is finished and the felt pieces are in the correct place.

In addition to level 3&4 you have selected and used a range of tools and equipment, using them safely with accuracy. Your chicken is well constructed and you have inspected your finished product and made changes where needed.
