    1. OverviewOne of the earliest existing civilizations is that of China. Because of this, Chinese literature is great in

volume. It is diffused among a population almost half of the entire globe, expressed by an original

language different from others. Their history goes back 5 thousand years, record of events almost

unbroken. Chinese literature has many influences on the Philippines and it goes all the way back to thetimes of open trading. They influenced our sociological belief on patriarchy (which was also practiced a

great deal worldwide), they also believed in a Supreme God. Their customs have been instilled as part of

our mixed culture like the Feng Shui and teachings of Confucius. On the more serious note, their Keju

Education System is also the basis of our civil service examinations, pre-requisite to taking on a public

duty/office. China has extended itself all throughout the world, even to the West. In the area of Drama

Literature and Fiction, for example, The 100 plays of Yuen Dynasty, was translated to European languages.

Another example is The Orphan of China which was the basis of Voltaires advocacy on civil freedoms and

attack on the French institutions of his time. He compared this Chinese drama to that of the French and

praises it, calling it a masterpiece where man in his daily life is subject and virtue is inculcated by

action and dialogue. Note that, Classical Chinese Literature developed independently from the Western

influence. Some records even show that Chinese drama began even before Rome started to cultivate thisart. Same goes with their advancement in means of printing and publishing, China has done on their own.

The wheels have turned. The difference is that now, the sinology of China has become an integral part of

world literature (sure enough, it is worthy). China has embraced Western while Chinese Literature in the

West has only a few scholarly patrons and lay readers. Modern Chinese literature is derivative of its

Westernization. Traditional Chinese literary and cultural conventions make up Modern Chinese Literature.

Ancient Chinese Literature is independent of Western influence, Modern Chinese Literature drew heavily

    on it.

    Monkey King Counterparts:

    1. Loki (Norse Mythology) sometimes assists gods and sometimes causes problems for them. He isa shape-shifter (salmon, mare, seal, fly or an elderly woman). Loki's positive relations with the

gods ends with his role in engineering the death of the god Baldr. Loki is eventually bound by the

gods with the entrails of one of his sons. A serpent drips venom from above him that his wifeSigyn collects into a bowl. However, Sigyn must empty the bowl when it is full, and the venom

that drips in the mean time causes Loki to writhe in pain, thereby causing earthquakes. With the

onset of Ragnark, Loki is foretold to slip free from his bonds and to fight against the gods among

the forces of the jtnar, at which time he will encounter the god Heimdallr and the two will slay

each other. He is similar to the Monkey king for being a TRICKSTER and having relations with the

    Gods.

    2. Eris (Greek Mythology) Goddess of Strife and Discord. Daughter of Nyx, Zeus and Hera.Strife cruel and has no mercy for man, fosters evil war and battle. She served as the inspiration to

the character of the evil Sorcerer in Sleeping Beauty.

She was said to have initiated the Trojan war. The goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite had been

invited along with the rest of Olympus to the forced wedding of Peleus and Thetis, who would

become the parents of Achilles, but Eris had been snubbed because of her troublemaking

    inclinations.

She therefore tossed into the party the Apple of Discord, a golden apple inscribed Kallisti "For the

most beautiful one", or "To the Fairest One" provoking the goddesses to begin quarreling about the

appropriate recipient. The hapless Paris, Prince of Troy, was appointed to select the most

beautiful by Zeus. Each of the three goddesses immediately attempted to bribe Paris to choose

her. Hera offered political power; Athena promised skill in battle; and Aphrodite tempted him with

the most beautiful woman in the world: Helen, wife of Menelaus of Sparta. While Greek culture

placed a greater emphasis on prowess and power, Paris chose to award the apple to Aphrodite,

thereby dooming his city, which was destroyed in the war that ensued.
