DINNER MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

Wednesday – January 25, 2017 Topic: Parametric Contingency Estimating on Small Projects

Presenter: Matthew Schoenhardt, P.Eng, MBA, PMP, RMP-President MS Consulting

Presentation Topic:

AACEI Recommended practice 43R-08, Risk Analysis and Contingency Determination using Parametric Estimating

applies historical empirical data to estimate contingency. This Parametric contingency method has clear advantages

over other AACE recommended practices for mega-projects including speed, accuracy and cost effectiveness. While

mega-projects capture the attention of executives, shareholders, media and researchers, the sheer quantity of many

companies’ “small projects” can eclipse the capital spend of a single mega-project. For most companies, small

projects are the foundation of sustained and incremental profitability. The size of “small projects” often precludes

detailed contingency assessments by project managers while their puny stature renders them unattractive to academic

research. As a result many firms solve this problem by simply applying 10% contingency across the board to small

projects, regardless of the project’s actual risk profile. This paper outlines a pioneering solution: a small-project

systemic contingency tool. This paper will use the example of a Canadian midstream oil and gas company and how it

solved the problem of small-project contingency assessments using a parametric approach using in-house data.

PRIOR SECTION ACTIVITY

Topic: Leading multicultural teams for Competitive Advantage

Presenter: Dr. Lionel Laroche – Owner, Multi Cultural Business Solutions

In today's fast changing global economy, we must work with people who are different from us, no matter what the

difference is. This brings both challenges and opportunities. Dr. Laroche’s presentation provided insight on how to lead

multicultural teams to high performing teams and increase the competitive advantage in organizations. The way we think,

communicate and respond in a wide range of professional situations depends to a significant extent on where we have

been brought up. In current business environment, most leaders have to lead multicultural project teams effectively and

this requires that leaders and team members understand how cultural differences impact the interpersonal dynamics of the

team . They also need to learn to overcome the initial challenges in order to benefit from the creativity and innovation that

result from having different people look at the same problems from different perspectives.

Dr. Laroche employed some hands-on exercises to make participants understand why culturally different people interact

professionally in ways that seem strange and wrong to them. The intent was ultimately to increase people’s cultural

competence so they can work more effectively with colleagues and clients of diverse cultural background. The

presentation evoked very lively discussion among participants and sharing of some their real life example to substantiate

the importance of subject.
