DIRECTOR’S NOTES SHIVON Denis and I sometimes get questions about the apparently “religious” content of our songs. If you don’t hold to the language used in a particular song, how does this work for you as a singer? This is an issue that comes up in any open community choir, where people of all backgrounds are encouraged to sing together. Some choirs, just like some schools, choose to avoid the whole issue by banning references to any religion. We take the opposite approach, embracing the beauty in all spiritual paths. There is such a wealth of beautiful music that has been inspired by the various spiritual traditions – we couldn’t bear to rule out that rich legacy. At the same time, we recognize and value the diversity in our choir community – in fact, would welcome much more diversity than we have at present. So how to help everyone feel comfortable about singing songs about Jesus, Mother Mary, a Jewish hymn, or lines from the Koran? I think the answer is to look for the beauty, and the essential mythological truth in all these songs, and not worry about the literal meaning or historical truth. They tend to be written on themes such as gratitude, courage, and asking for help, for peace, comfort, etc. As our friend Ann Mortifee says when she prays, “To whom it may concern...” I resonate deeply with the words of one of our favorite songs, Mystery – and to me, all these various expressions of the Divine are merely human attempts to name that which cannot be named. But the mystery can be felt, and songs like Requiem, or Masibulele ku Jesu, and Prayers of an Atheist - all help me feel the mystery in a way that nourishes my soul. We welcome hearing your thoughts on the subject. ~ Shivon ********************** DENIS Some internet sites that you might find interesting, that are relevant to our current repertoire: http://www.betsyrosemusic.org/ Home page of Betsy Rose, the writer of "Circle of Light" http://bethnielsenchapman.com/ Home page of Beth Nielsen Chapman. There will be potluck gatherings from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on each of the following choir nights:

Tuesday April 3 Thursday April 12

These potlucks, held every session, are a tradition in the choir that allows us to get to know each other a little better. Please bring a tasty dish to share and your own plate and cutlery. An „ingredients‰ sign would be helpful for those with dietary considerations and perhaps a name label in case someone wants to get your recipe from you. All choir members are welcome at all potlucks. Come and enjoy! Shivon, Denis, Gloria & Bill

WORD OF MOUTH / RECOMMENDATIONS A NOBEL PRIZE FOR PETE SEEGER? A further note on the quote from the song “How Can I Keep From Singing?” (Quoted in last week’s newsletter) The original hymn was written by American Baptist minister Robert Wadsworth Lowry in 1860. About a hundred years later, Pete Seeger added a verse and reworked the lyric to have a more humanist feeling. Which segues nicely into this notice. A grassroots movement has begun to persuade the American Friends Service Committee to nominate Pete Seeger for the Nobel Peace Prize. The petition can be found on the following website: http://www.petitionthem.com/default.asp?sect=detail&pet=3774 Pete Seeger’s compositions, among them 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone', 'If I Had a Hammer', and 'The Big Muddy’ have served as anthems for an entire generation. For instance, he sang "We Shall Overcome" at the founding meeting of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Raleigh, N.C., in 1960. Through fundraising concerts, endorsements, and personal participation, Pete has supported almost every peace organization in the United States and internationally. At the age of 87 he continues to be a crusader for peace, social justice, and ecological responsibility. This petition seeks to acknowledge a lifetime of dedication to humanity and the planet. A DE-SCENT RECOMMENDATION

Dear All,

Yesterday we had our usual wonderful Sowelu Singers practice with Shivon. A new woman came to join us--she participated enthusiastically but all of a sudden she walked out of the Pemberton Chapel with her song book in hand. I thought that she might have gone to the washroom, she came back after 5 minutes or so and I asked her afterwards if she had enjoyed the session…..

She then said to me: “There was a faint smell of perfume and I could not stand it any longer, I had to rush out for some fresh air- I am very allergic to perfume!”

I then made myself a promise to remind ALL OF US to please NOT USE any perfume, aftershave or perfumed soap before we go to our choir practices!!

“ Let Your Little Light Shine!!”

Recommneded by: Marya Nijland, volunteer coordinator of the Sowelu Singers and former soprano of the GHC

THINGS & OPPORTUNITIES WANTED NEEDED: MINI-KEYBOARDS FOR “SONGS OF PASSAGE” Songs of Passage is looking for several mini-keyboards for use in their Bedside Singing work at Hospice and elsewhere. They are only needed to get a clear 'start note' for each song (much softer tone that pitch pipes: doesn't startle or disturb patient) - so only need to have 1-1/2 octaves ('G below middle C' to 'A above middle C') and be portable - no other features are required. Children's keyboards might also work, if they have the right 1-1/2 octave range. We would appreciate donations of such keyboards, but could afford to pay up to $5 for each one. JUST FOR FUN A reward of laughter for reading this far

THE SPANISH COMPUTER A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.

"House" for instance, is feminine: "la casa." "Pencil," however, is masculine: "el lapiz."

A student asked, "What gender is 'computer'?" Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether "computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men's group decided that "computer" should definitely be of the feminine gender ("la computadora"), because:

1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;

2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;

3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and

4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ("el computador"), because:

1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;

2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;

3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and

As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model. ========= THAT'S ALL FOLKS ========= M aking U niversal S ounds I n C ommunity A Community Choir Crescendo, check out the Choir Directory at: http://www.ubuntuchoirs.net ================================== Adapted from an email received from Mona Patel, Soundings Alto & GHC Tenor
