TIM PLACE Head CoachTim Place enters his ninth season at the helm of the Hawks football program. The 2015 team tied the program best record with a 6-4 finish (originally achieved in 2012). Place guided the team to their first win over an NCAA Division I opponent (Delaware State) and defeated perennial CIAA powerhouse Winston-Salem State University for the first time in program history. Nick Hahula was named CIAA Special Teams Player of Year and also earned All-CIAA honors along with Michael Lugo. Roderick Lindsey and Tyree Lee were named to the All-CIAA Second Team and Anthony Elliott earned CIAA All-Rookie Team accolades. In his first season with the Hawks, Lee set the single game rushing yards record (223 vs. Saint Augustine’s) and set single season rush attempts (219), rushing yards (1,049), rushing touchdowns (12) and points (96) records.

Place guided the 2014 team to a 2-8 overall record and a 1-6 finish in CIAA competition. The Hawks earned a fifth place finish in the CIAA Northern Division. Two Hawks players, Kemaree Alcorn and Marcel Burns, Jr., earned CIAA All-Rookie Defensive Team accolades. Alcorn also earned NCCAA All-American Second Team recognition. A record was also set in 2014 with DaSean Martin tallying four rushing touchdowns in a single game.

The 2013 team posted a 4-6 overall record and 3-4 finish in CIAA competition. The Hawks ended the year in fourth place in the CIAA Northern Division. Chowan had several players earn CIAA accolades. Robert Hollad was named CIAA offensive

Player of the Year; Jason Ampy, Aeon Blake and Dakorion DeSamme all earned CIAA Second Team honors with Andrew Denny and Kevin Tarr grabbing All-Rookie recognition. Place led the 2012 squad to their first winning season since 1999 when the then-Braves posted a 5-4 mark. The 2012 season was the most successful in terms of wins and conference finish since the school began its transition to a four-year school in 1992. Their 6-4 overall record and 5-2 record in league play was good for a 2nd place finish in the CIAA Northern Division; their best finish since joining the conference in 2008. Place received the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald Front Page Award in March of 2013 in recognition of his efforts and leadership in the campus and local community. In addition to their success on the field, the Hawks had their second-ever representative on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team with Austin Tallant earning the honor in 2012. Place, who stepped down as the head coach at Urbana University (OH) to accept the position at Chowan, has a vast and diverse football coaching background. Most recently he served as the head coach at Urbana where he tallied an 11-11 record over two seasons.

At Urbana, he breathed new life into the program after taking over as interim Head Coach in the summer of 2006. In a seamless transition, he guided that 2006 team to a 4-1 season start and was ranked as high as 10th in the NAIA national rankings. In 2007, Place led the team to only its second winning season in program history after finishing up at 6-5. For six consecutive weeks, the 2007 squad was ranked in the NAIA’s Top 25. Over his two year tenure as head coach at Urbana, Place saw 23 student-athletes named all conference, two student-athletes garner NAIA All-America Honors, and two student-athletes be named to the NAIA Football All-America Scholar-Athlete team. Place spent a total of six seasons with the Blue Knights, four as the Defensive Coordinator, three as the Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator, and two as the head coach. As the Defensive Coordinator in 2004, Place was named the Mid-States Football Association’s Assistant Coach of the Year after coaching one of the league’s premier defenses. As the assistant head coach at Urbana, Place also served as the football program’s recruiting coordinator and academic advisor. He was integral in bringing several of the best football classes into Urbana while also holding them to high academic standards. While he was the team’s academic advisor, they raised their overall team GPA by one point. Along with his six-year stint at Urbana, Place has college coaching experience at Western Carolina University, Eureka College (IL), and Hartwick College (NY). At WCU, he served as a linebackers and defensive line coach while also heading up the academic support services for over 300 student-athletes within the WCU athletic department. At Eureka, he coached both wide receivers and tight ends, including the NCAA DIII’s All-Time Leading Receiver, Kurt Barth. Place also has high school head coaching experience at Greene Central High School in New York and at Ravenna High School in Ohio. Place graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia with a B.A. in Psychology. At W&L he was a four-year member of the football team and two-year letter winner. He has a M.S. from SUNY-Albany in Counseling Psychology. Place and his wife, Jennifer Zak Place, have two children, Nathaniel and Claire.

MARK HALLOffensive Coordinator

Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers

Mark Hall will enter his ninth season with the Chowan University football program. Hall is one of four coaches that came to Chowan with Tim Place from Urbana University. Hall serves as Offensive Coordinator and works primarily with quarterbacks and wide Receivers.

He was instrumental in cultivating national talent Robert Holland. The 2013 CIAA Offensive Player of the Year owns all of the Chowan receiving records and set the CIAA and NCAA DII career

record (325) during his final season. Holland was drafted to the Calgary Stampeders as part of the Canadian Football League shortly upon graduation from Chowan.

In 2012, he guided wide receiver Ryan Nolan to a spot on the CIAA All-Rookie Team. Nolan started all 10 games during his rookie campaign, and led the Hawks in receptions (39), season receiving yards (634) and touchdowns (6) while averaging 63.4 receiving yards per game. As a team in 2012, the Hawks averaged 430.7 yards of offense per game, and averaged 32.8 points per game during their first winning season since 1999.

The Miamisburg, Ohio native got his start in college level coaching at Urbana in 2005 after completing his B.S. in Sports Leisure Activities. At Urbana, he coached the running backs and quarterbacks and was promoted to co-offensive coordinator in 2007. Hall was a three-year starter and was a first team All-Ohio selection his senior year at Miamisburg High School. He graduated from Urbana in 2005 with his B.S. and in May of 2007, he graduated from Urbana University with an M.S. in Education.

He and his wife Amy reside in Murfreesboro, N.C. Together they have two daughters, Avery and Makaylin. He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association and also serves as a part time instructor in the SSPE Department at Chowan.

kurt von bargenDefensive Coordinator

Linebackers

Kurt von Bargen enters his second year with the Chowan University athletic department and the Hawks’ football program. He served as the Assistant Coach for Linebackers during the 2015 season and was promoted to Defensive Coordinator in 2016.

Prior to coming to Chowan, von Bargen worked for the University of South Florida as a graduate assistant and was later promoted to Assistant Linebackers Coach and Assistant Defensive Line Coach over the course of three seasons with the Bulls. Von Bargen was also responsible for all of the weekly offensive opponent breakdowns and scouting reports, the coordination of the team discipline program, and recruiting in ten states.

Von Bargen served a brief stint at Dartmouth College as the Offensive Line Assistant and Assistant Director of Football Operations before his time at the University of South Florida. He also gained experience during a two-year stop at Trinity College as the Outside Linebackers Coach and Assistant Coordinator for Special Teams. The Big Green lead the nation in all divisions in rushing defense (2010 & 2011), total defense (2011) and scoring defense (2011) during von Bargen’s time at Dartmouth.

Prior to working at Dartmouth, von Bargen served as the Outside Linebackers Coach and Assistant Coordinator for Special Teams for the United States Coast Guard Academy. He served the Academy for just under one year while recruiting student-athletes in five states.

Von Bargen competed as a football student-athlete at East Carolina University. He played defensive back for the Pirates and was a participant in the PapaJohns.com Bowl (2006), Hawaii Bowl (2007) and Liberty Bowl (2009). Von Bargen and the Pirates won the the Conference USA Championship in 2008. Most notably, von Bargen represented East Carolina University as a NCAA Rudy Award nominee.

The two-time Dean’s List member and Honor Roll honoree graduated from East Carolina in 2009 with a B.S. in Health Education and Promotion. He is currently pursuing two master’s degrees; one from Trinity College (American Studies) and one from South Florida (Physical Education).

joshua CueStrength & Conditioning Coordinator/

Assistant Coach: Running Backs & Tight EndsJoshua Cue serves as Strength and Conditioning Coordinator and Assistant Coach. He works primarily with running backs and tight ends and enters his second season with the Hawks. Prior to joining the staff at Chowan, Cue served as a volunteer assistant with Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri where worked specifically with the defensive line.

Cue also served as the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator as part of the St. Louis Cardinals (AA Springfield) for three years. In that capacity, Cue assisted with the design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for the organization while monitoring athlete data and progress on a bi-monthly basis. The Cardinals won the World Series in 2011, were named Texas League Champions (AA, 2012), and clinched the National League Championship (2013) and National League Central Championship (2014) during Cue’s time with the organization.

Cue served as an intern at Florida Atlantic University in 2010 where he worked specifically with the football, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s track teams. In 2009, Cue was a Class A intern with the Colorado Rockies.

He gained experience as a graduate assistant at the University of Northern Iowa, working primarily with the football, men’s basketball and track and field teams. He also designed strength and conditioning programs for the men’s and women’s golf teams, women’s tennis, and women’s swim teams. The football team won the Gateway Conference Championship in 2007 and 2008 during Cue’s time at Northern Iowa.

Cue competed as a football student-athlete at Waldorf College for two seasons and concluded his academic and athletic career at the University of Northern Iowa.

kYLE CHASERecruiting Coordinator/

Assistant Coach: Defensive Backs

Kyle Chase enters his first season with the Hawks and serves as Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Coach. He works specifically with Defensive Backs.

Chase came to Chowan by way of East Carolina University after serving as a graduate assistant with the football program for three years. In 2013, Chase worked primarily with inside linebackers and assisted with recruiting in the Virginia Beach and Richmond, Virginia areas. Additionally, he created weekly scouting reports and directed scout meetings and served as Camp Director for the Pirates’ annual football camp.

During his second season with the program, Chase served as an assistant to the defensive coordinator as well as the special teams coordinator while expanding recruiting areas into North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. He held position meetings, practice times, and monitored academics for student-athletes and served as a mentor of 2014 NCAA Thorpe Award semi-finalist, Josh Hawkins.

Prior to his time with the Pirates, Chase gained experience coaching at the high school level. He served assistant coaching stints at J.H. Rose High School and South Central High School while also conducting summer camps in Georgia and North Carolina.

Chase worked in the mental health field from 2007-2010. In that capacity, he created behavioral plans for children and adolescents and provided family and individual intervention services.

Chase competed at East Carolina. He appeared in 43 games while making 24 starts at strong safety.

The Atlanta, Georgia native graduated from East Carolina in December 2007 with a degree in Child Development and Family

Technology.

He has one son, Kasyn, and an infant daughter, Kyleigh.

ZACH TENUTAAssistant Coach:

Defensive LineZach Tenuta enters his first season with the Hawks and serves as Assistant Coach. he works primarily with the defensive line.

Before coming to Chowan, Tenuta quickly advanced from graduate assistant to Defensive Ends Coach at the University of Virginia. Tenuta gained coaching experience with the Cavaliers while charting plays, breaking down film, and instructing student-athletes on proper technique.

Prior to joining the staff at the University of Virginia, Tenuta served the Wake County Public School District as a substitute teacher while coaching the linebackers and defensive ends as a Middle Creek High School varsity assistant.

Tenuta competed as a tight end at Marshall University from 2008-2010 before completing his athletic career at the University of Akron. He returned to Marshall University in 2012-2013 and earned a B.S. in General Studies.

Tenuta resides in Murfreesboro.

Tyler WrayEquipment Coordinator

Tyler Wray enters his second season as part of the Chowan University football staff. He serves as the team’s Equipment Coordinator.

Prior to coming to Chowan, Wray served as an intern with the Tennessee State University football team where he assisted with daily practice and sideline operations. He was also responsible for the team’s inventory and ordering system. During the off-season, Wray worked with I9 Sports to operate youth soccer and flag football leagues.

From 2010-2014, Wray served the East Carolina University football program as a student equipment manager. In that capacity, Wray was responsible for set-up and breakdown of daily practice and sideline preparation on game days. He also assisted at various East Carolina summer football camps.

Wray attended Crest High School in Shelby, North Carolina, where he played football and baseball and was part of the Chamber Choir. He went on to Cleveland Community College before graduating with a degree in Sport Studies from East Carolina University in 2014.

sean cascarano

Sean Cascarano enters his first season with the Chowan football team. He serves as Assistant Coach and works specifically with the offensive line.

Prior to joining the staff at Chowan, Cascarano gained coaching experience at his alma mater, the University of Virginia. The four-year player, three-year letter winner, and All-ACC Academic honoree for the Cavaliers transitioned from the role of student-

athlete to student assistant coach and graduate assistant over the course of two seasons.

Focusing his efforts on the offensive line, Cascarano coached and organized the scout team, developed practice schedules, contributed to the program’s recruiting efforts, created scouting reports, and provided support to the offensive coaching staff on game days.

Cascarano also served as an intern with Affinity Management in 2012 and an aid for Executive Fitness Training from 2008-2009.

He obtained a B.A. in History from the University of Virginia in December of 2013, and is currently pursuing an M.S. in Curriculum.

Cascarano resides in Murfreesboro.

The Chowan University football team, fresh off a program-best 6-4 record in 2015, returns to the gridiron poised to take the program to new heights once again. The Hawks, under the direction of Head Coach Tim Place in his ninth season, look to build on a 4-3 record in CIAA play and fourth place finish in the Northern Division.

Chowan kicks-off the 2016 season at Fayetteville State University on September 3rd in a nonconference battle. The Hawks will then square off against FCS opponent Campbell University in their home-opener on September 10th before taking on the University of West Florida on September 17th in Garrison Stadium. Kick-off for both home contests is slated for 6pm.

The Hawks hit the road to open CIAA crossover play on September 24th against Livingstone College before returning to Garrison Stadium for three straight home games.

On October 1st, Chowan plays host to Johnson C. Smith University at 6pm. October 8th will serve as the Hawks’ Homecoming Game with a 3pm kick-off against Bowie State University. The contest also marks the first CIAA Northern Division match-up of the season. Chowan rounds out the three-week home stretch on October 15th with a 1pm contest against the Panthers of Virginia Union University.

The Hawks will compete on the road for the next two weekends with a battle against rival Elizabeth City State University on October 22nd and October 29th contest against Virginia State University. Chowan will conclude the regular season with a home game against Lincoln University (PA) on November 5th. Kick-off is slated for 1pm. The Hawks’ battle against the Lions will be the Chowan University Hall of Fame Game.

Chowan posted a 6-4 overall record in 2015 and a 4-3 record against CIAA opponents. The Hawks earned their first win over an NCAA Division I opponent in program history with a 31-30 victory against Delaware State University while defeating Saint Augustine’s University, Elizabeth City State University and CIAA powerhouse Winston-Salem State University for the first time.

Place noted, “We face a challenging schedule again this year with nine NCAA Division II opponents and one FCS opponent. The CIAA Northern Division race will be extremely challenging, as it historically is. This season, we have to do a better job protecting the quarterback, improving third-down efficiency, and eliminating pre-snap penalties.”

The Hawks embark on the 2016 season with six starters returning on the offensive side of the ball and five on the defensive side. Offensively, Tyree Lee enters his senior season after emerging as a top running back for the Hawks and in the CIAA last year. The Hampton, Virginia native led the Hawks in all rushing categories with 219 rushes for 1,049 yards. He tallied 12 rushing touchdowns for the Blue and White in 2015 while averaging 104.9 yards per game and 4.8 per carry. In his first season with the Hawks, Lee etched his name in the record books after setting the single game rushing yards record (223 vs. Saint Augustine’s University, 9/26/2015), single season rush attempts (219), single season rushing yards (1,049), single season rushing touchdowns (12), and single season points (96).

Randall Dixon completed 109 of 193 pass attempts for 1,313 yards and 12 touchdowns last season; averaging 164.1 yards per game. Jordan Watkins earned three starts as a freshman. The Vero Beach, Florida native completed 44 of 66 pass attempts for 592 yards along with seven touchdown passes.

Kaine Lombard returns for his senior season for the Chowan Blue and White after hauling in 47 receptions for 622 yards. He recorded six touchdowns for the hawks while averaging 62.6 receiving yards per game. Lee followed with 30 receptions for 354 yards and four touchdowns.

Defensively, Demetrius Newberry accounted for 61 total tackles (44 solo, 17 assisted) while notching 4.5 tackles for loss (16 yards). Nate Wyche recorded 30 stops on the season, with 21 solo tackles. He also notched 10 tackles for loss (40 yards) highlighted by six sacks on the year (29 yards).

Place commented, “This season, we must be present for all ten games and in all sixty minutes each game. We have to play hard, fast, smart, together and stay disciplined. We’ve worked over the last few months to develop mentally and physically, and we must continue that over the four months of the season”.
