19Nov11 Apache County Commentary on Mexican Wolves Proposed Initial Release in Greenlee County Chris Bagnoli Interagency Field Team Leader Arizona Game and Fish Department Mexican Wolf Reintroduction Project P.O. Box 856 Alpine, Az 85920 Office: 928 339 4329 Cell: 928 242 6813 [email protected] Mr. Chris Bagnoli, I had a brief discussion with you via telephone concerning the short timeframe for Apache County to comment as well as the fact that Apache County officials were scattered at multiple hearings around the state this week. Hence, here is just a quick comment from Apache County concerning the proposed initial release of Mexican Wolves in Greenlee County. We do however appreciate your efforts in contacting Apache County and starting a coordinated effort to include us in your planning efforts as a coordinating agency. Apache County is opposed to any further releases of Mexican Wolves due to lack of coordination among various departments and entities involved in the Mexican Wolf Reintroduction Project with the Apache County Board of Supervisors and Sheriff. Apache County is also opposed to any further releases of Mexican Wolves until we can get a concise accounting of the effects of the Wallow Fire on the Wolf Reintroduction Project. For example, numbers of individual wolves, locations of any packs, movements of packs, etc., since the Wallow Fire in Greenlee, Apache and Catron Counties.
As well, Apache County opposes any additional releases of Mexican Wolves until we can get a full reporting on how any releases are tracked, kept from entering our county from other counties or regions, what efforts and techniques are used to apprehend Mexican Wolves, etc. Apache County also respectfully requests to be a coordinating agency with the Mexican Wolf Reintroduction Project in any and all future projects, plans, events, public hearings, etc. Thank you for your time and efforts in contacting Apache County and your efforts on including Apache County as a coordinating agency. Sincerely, Doyel Shamley Apache County Natural Resource Coordinator [email protected] CC: AZ State Congressional and Senate Representatives U.S. Congressional and Senate Representatives
