Located in the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania, Drums is an example of the historic mining villages typical of the region. This design started with an existing problem intersection which created poor visibility and unsafe merging. Realignment of the roads create much safer 90 degree intersections and provided residual space for infill development. The addition of a library and adaptive reuse of the existing buildings including the old lumber mill create a destination for shopping as well as a self-reliant community with an internal economic system.

The Spring Creek Canyon is located between State College and Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. This parcel of land is a beautiful example of a pristine, central Pennsylvania river ecosystem. This study was conducted in order to procure more detailed information regarding the proper distribution of land around the Spring Creek Canyon to prospective buyers. After conducting GIS spatial analysis of each interested party and their desired use, the following distrution map was created to ensure each interested party received functional land while preserving the delicate river ecosystem.

The citizens of Rome consume roughly 450 liters of water per person, every day. This ranks as one of the highest consumption rates in all of Europe. The challenge of this project was to accomplish more than the creation of a pedestrian park, but to introduce something truely unique to the Eternal City. By moving the existing parking lot underground, a great deal of open space is created.

As the Tiber River is exposed to direct runoff from the mostly impervious cityscape, it has been polluted. The benches mounted on the raised planters found throughout the piazza act as hydroponic filtration systems to cleanse water pumped from the Tiber before reintroducing it downstream.

As open, green space is a commodity for students on campus, preserving the existing space while creating a unique destination for public use became an interesting challenge.

By using a heavily regimented pattern of cherry trees to create an allee through the center of the space, the scholastic aura remains present. However, by allowing for natural growth cycles to occur on the east and west ends of the site, an attention to natural processes is demonstrated.

Working as part of an interdisciplinary team to design a LEED Platinum Elementary School was an incredible opportunity. We progressed from conceptual site design to completed design (including some details and construction documents) in less than 4 months.

Above is a rendering of the outdoor classroom. The view across the newly planted, reclaimed parking lot ties the proposed school to its community, by framing the prominent geological feature, Mount Nittany. By allowing for students to participate in classes outside, we created a uniquely engaging atmosphere that also allows for flexible teaching space.

Creating a single-story building presented challenges, not the least of which was the size of the building footprint. In order to combat this we created a great deal of naturally planted areas in order to infiltrate the greatest amount of stormwater possinble before allowing it to leave the site.

The new, one-way entry drive for parents and faculty provides separation from the large volume of school buses for the safety of students and the ease of access for parents rushing to drop their children before work. As the new Mount Nittany Elementary School is being placed between two existing schools it had to be integrated tastefully and efficiently in order to provide for easy engagment between the schools.
