PROJECT: COMMUNITY COMPLEX

Location

Quad Community, Chicago, Illinois

Purpose

The Quad Community expressed their desires for a safer community, with enhanced economical opportunities, and for youth engagement and activities.

Result

The community complex has a variety of different activities that engage a multitude of different user groups. The three buildings are the community market, the community auditorium and workshop space, and the Youth/Business incubator.

The Quad Community has a very dense and impactful history, mainly founded by a black migration to the city. The current neighborhood sees a lack of funding in schools and activities for the youth, a decline in safe neighborhoods, and a lackluster employment standard.

The design is an attempt to bring the community together in a single space that everyone can use. The community market space (north) is a permanent home for the current outdoor market. The communal space (west) offers workshop and discussion space.

The youth and business center (east) offers a place for the youth to interact with each other in a safe and productive space, as well as gives local start-ups an affordable space.

The construction materials are pre-cast concrete insulated panels and a grid system of 50ft x 50ft bays for the structural columns. The exterior of the building will be polished concrete and a system of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fabric built in a triangluar shape. The PTFE fabic breaks up the size and the shape of the building. Depending on the orientation of the facade there would be more or less fabric based on the amount of solar gain (more fabric on southern walls and less fabric on northern walls)

Further iterations of the project would lead to a separation of the facade from some selections of the facade, in order to create smaller exterior pockets of space. This would allow for users outside of the building to have more space to socialize.

PIANO PROJECT

Location

Boulder, Colorado

Purpose

There are many cost and design benefits of prefabricated modular units. This studio focused on the design of modular units, the creation of a kit-of-parts, and the construction of a residential building in northeast Boulder.

Result

The intial step was creating a system of shipping container units, which would serve as the modular units on the second floor. Use of the paneling system of a container allows for more durable formwork for the precast concrete walls on the first floor.

First Floor

Raising the building up several feet takes it out of the floodplain that the site sits within.

The angular aspect of the second floor demarcates entry to the building, both the front door and the rear entrance to the courtyard.

The western side of the courtyard is left open for easy access to the pocket park as well as views to the Flatirons and the Rocky Mountains.

The formal morphology of the building starts with 40ft and 20ft long shipping container forms. These forms are shifted around, with the concrete forms on the first floor.

These forms create an interior sunken courtyard and are penetrated to allow access through the forms. The two metal shipping containers are then placed on top.

Once the form and construction of the building is complete a facade of operable PTFE panels are installed to help mitigate the solar heat gains of the building.

NGM House

Location

Lawrence, Kansas

Purpose

Buildings are not and should not be designed with the idea that they will only be used with one family and in only one way. This studio asked for different life-cycle scenarios for a residential house and the 1-, 5-, and 10-year plans

Result

This residential project utilizes shipping containers as its main structural and modular system. The building is designed in such a way the the future holds many different possibilities of change.

This design was intended to be a two part concept. The first part was the initial one through five years where the original owner is living within the house. The second part was the next block of time where the life-cycle of the building is altered to fit a new situation. The residence needed to be flexible enough to allow renovation or expansion.

The original owners for thie design is a newlywed couple who are expecting a child. They live in a modular home what utilizes shipping containers as its core system. The spaces within this residence are tailored for the specific habits of each individual. The second scenario is an additional relative who moves into the house and therefore there needs to be an additional space built for this person.

The second phase of the life cycle is the additional family member who joins the residence. This additional family member takes over the original master bedroom, due to the addition of a second floor bedroom. This second master bedroom connects to an extended hallway that leads to the artist studio on the second floor.

This project has the possibility to further change and alter its system to allow for the owners to add or subtract based on their required needs.

Revision Headquaters

Location

Westwood neighborhood, Denver, Colorado

Purpose

Revision is a local non-profit organization that teaches community members on backyard gardens. Revision has plans on the expansion of their headquarters to allow for a permanent grocery store and offices.

Result

The combination of grocery store and offices grew with the addition of a professional kitchen and greenhouse for education of correct food practices.

The Westwood neighborhood in Denver is considered a food desert and Revision is a local organization that helps try to localize food production. Their main goal is to teach community members about the benefits of growing their own food. However, Revision is looking to expand their operations into a new space that has room for a grocery store for local foods, a kitchen that can educate the community about healthy food preparations, enough office space for further expansion, and a greenhouse for education and supplementation for the grocery store.

Community Center

Location

Boulder, Colorado

Purpose

Most studio classes were taught that “form follows function,” yet this studio emphasized that this saying might not apply to every building type.

Result

Drawing from 3D modern art sculptures, students designed buildings using the idea that “function follows form.” This building is a community center that focuses around film’s history, production, and viewing.

This form started from a “Frank Gehry” styled model, a folded sheet of manila envelope. The abstract form allowed for an interesting play of space within the building. Transforming a sheet of paper into a habitable space was a challenging endeavor and made for an interesting project. The goal was to create a community center that was situated near the base of the Rocky Mountains.

The concept was to design a film center where users could go and learn about the making of films, the history of the film industry, and also partake in viewing new or old movies. Each floor is dedicated to a different focus and the progression through the space is developed around education. The southeast portion of the building is an exterior viewing space to watch different films.

The first floor of this cultural center is the history of the film industry, with different production techniques and film props.The second floor is the exhibition space that displays current filming techniques and the different methods of producing movies in the current era.The third floor is the cafe, dining space, and lounge, all of which have views to the Boulder Valley.
