In the book, Cutt ing for Stone, by Abraham Verghese, Dr. Thomas Stone asks

his medical school students, ?What treatment in an emergency is administered

by ear?? The students were baffled. Undoubtedly they tried to access what

they had learned regarding medical procedures, surgeries and medications

that could be administered by ear in an emergency and could think of none.

Then unexpectedly one of the students responded, ?Words of comfort.? And he

was correct.

In the Gospel, Jesus is trying to administer words of comfort to the crowds

(John 6:51-58). Certainly in those crowds were people who were very i l l , extremely troubled, confused or even

traumatized by the ci rcumstances of thei r l ives. Perhaps they were seeking fai l safe remedies, dramatic

heal ings, or clear di rection on how to make things better. What they got were Jesus? words tel l ing them that

he is the l iving bread that came down from heaven and that those who eat this bread wi l l l ive forever. He

does not give them remedies, solutions, or clear di rections. He gives them words of comfort. He is trying to

reassure them that no matter what is happening in thei r l ives, he is the bread that wi l l sustain them.

In emergencies, there are often many things that can be done. There are medical procedures, medications,

financial assistance, psychological interventions, technological courses of action, spi ri tual wisdoms.

Certainly, treatment that wi l l help needs to be sought. At the same t ime, emergencies can be so

overwhelming and complex that we get stuck think ing there is nothing we can do. As those who are

nourished by the l i fe giving bread of the Eucharist, we do wel l to remember that there is always a treatment

that can be administered by ear. Like Jesus in the Gospel, the treatment is words of comfort and reassurance

given to others and words of comfort that we open ourselves to hearing.

In the Gospel story, intent on hearing only what they wanted to hear, some were deaf to

hearing Jesus? words of comfort. Unable to hear words of comfort, they would surely

have di fficulty giving them. Perhaps i t is t ime to open our ears anew to Jesus' words of

comfort. Having done so, in future emergencies we wi l l remember the treatment that is

administered by ear.

What is RCIA and who is it f or ? The Ri te of Christ ian Ini t iat ion of Adults (RCIA) is a process whereby new members join the Cathol ic Church, designed speci fical ly for the fol lowing:

1. Adults who have never been baptized and who want to inqui re about the Cathol ic fai th. 2. Adults who have been baptized into another Christ ian tradi t ion (Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist, etc.) who

want to inqui re about the Cathol ic fai th. 3. Baptized Cathol ic adults who have not completed the Sacraments of Fi rst Holy Communion and

Confi rmation and need more fai th formation. There is open enrol lment now. We wi l l be having registrat ion before and after al l Masses on Sundays in August. En el l ibro, corte de piedra, de Abraham Verghese, Dr. Thomas Stone le pide a sus alumnos de la Facultad de medicina, "¿Qué tratamiento en caso de emergencia es administrado por oído?" Los estudiantes estaban desconcertados. Sin duda han tratado de acceder a lo que habían aprendido sobre procedimientos médicos, ci rugías y medicamentos que podrían administrarse de oído en caso de emergencia y podrían pensar en ninguna. Luego inesperadamente uno de los estudiantes respondió, "Palabras de consuelo." Y era correcto.

En el Evangel io, Jesús está intentando administrar palabras de consuelo a las mult i tudes (John 6:51-58). Sin duda en esas muchedumbres eran personas que estaban muy mal, muy preocupado, confundido o aún traumatizada por las ci rcunstancias de sus vidas. Tal vez se buscaban fai l seguro remedios, curaciones espectaculares, o clara di rección sobre cómo hacer las cosas mejor. Lo que consiguieron fueron las palabras de Jesús diciendo que él es el pan vivo que descendió del cielo y que aquel los que comen de este pan vivi rá para siempre. No les dan remedios, soluciones, o borrar las di recciones. Él les da palabras de consuelo. Está tratando de tranqui l izar a los que no importa lo que está sucediendo en sus vidas, él es el pan que les sustentarán.

En si tuaciones de emergencia, a menudo hay muchas cosas que se pueden hacer. Existen procedimientos médicos, medicamentos, asistencia financiera, intervenciones psicológicas, tecnológicos cursos de acción, sabiduría espi ri tual. Sin duda, tratamiento que debe ser tratado. Al mismo t iempo, las si tuaciones de emergencia pueden ser tan abrumadoras y compleja que quedamos atrapados pensando que no hay nada que podemos hacer. Como aquel los que son al imentados por la vida dando el pan de la Eucaristía, bien para recordar que siempre hay un tratamiento que puede ser administrado por oído. Como Jesús en el Evangel io, el tratamiento es palabras de comodidad y seguridad a otros y palabras de consuelo que abrimos nosotros mismos a la audiencia.

En la historia del Evangel io, la intención de escuchar sólo lo que querían escuchar, algunos fueron sordos a escuchar las palabras de Jesús de confort. Incapaces de oír palabras de consuelo, seguramente tendrían di ficultad para darles. Tal vez es t iempo de abri r nuestros oídos nuevamente a las palabras de Jesús de confort. Después de hacerlo, emergencias en el futuro recordaremos el tratamiento que se administra por el oído.

¿Qué es RICA y par a quién es? El Ri to de Iniciación Crist iana para Adultos (RICA) es el proceso en donde nuevos miembros se unen a la Iglesia Catól ica, diseñado específicamente para lo siguiente:

1. Adultos que nunca fueron bautizados o los que quieren saber más de la fe Catól ica. 2. Adultos que han sido bautizados en otra tradición crist iana (Lutheran, Methodist, Bautista, etc.) que
