How Christmas is celebrated all over the

    world???

    Mexico

Several weeks before Christmas, elaborately decorated market stalls or puestos are set up in the plazas of

every town and city. Some people travel for days from remote areas to get to these markets. The puestos

offer crafts of every conceivable kind, foods such as cheese, bananas, nuts, and cookies, and flowers such

as orchids and poinsettias. The poinsettia is native to Mexico and is believed to have first been used in

connection with Christmas in the 17th century when Mexican Franciscans included the flowers in their

Christmas celebration. There is a legend connected with the flowe r. A little boy named Pablo was walking

to the church in his village to visit the Nativity scene, when he realized he had nothing to offer the Christ

Child. He saw some green branches growing along the roadside and gathered them up. Other children

scoffed, but when he laid them by the manger, a brilliant red star -shaped flower appeared on each branch.

The main Christmas celebration in Mexico is called las posadas, which refers to processions reenacting

Joseph and Mary's search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. The processions begin nine days before

Christmas because the original journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem took nine days. Friends and family

members divide themselves into two groups - pilgrims and innkeepers. The pilgrims travel from house to

house asking for a shelter and are refused at each until they finally reach the house where an alter and

Nativity scene have been set up. Here the pilgrims are admitted with great rejoicing, a traditional prayer is

spoken, and the party begins. Food and drink are s erved and then children take turns trying to break open

    the pinata.

    The Story Of Santa Claus

Santa Claus was really St. Nicholas. Saint Nicholas was born in 245 AD and died in 350 AD in Lycia,

Anatolia, a province on the southwest coast of Asia Minor. This part of the world is now Turkey. He was abishop of a church. The legend of his generosity has been handed down throughout the years through

    thousands of churches.

In 1823, Clement C. Moore wrote "A Visit from St. Nicholas', which showed Santa Claus driving a sleight

drawn by "eight tiny reindeer." We know this story as "The Night Before Christmas." The image of Santa

Claus, as we know him, was drawn by Thomas Na st.

There are many legends of St. Nicholas, but this is the most famous legend and it includes elements of

today's Santa. A nobleman who lived with his three daughters had fallen on hard times. The daughters had

no chance of marriage, since their fathe r could not pay their dowries.

One night, St. Nicholas threw a sack of gold through a window of the nobleman's shabby castle, which wasenough for one daughter's marriage. The next night, he tossed another sack of gold through the w indow for

    the second daught er.

But on the third night, the window was closed. So, St. Nicholas climbed onto the roof and dropped the sack

down the chimney. The next morning, the daughters found the gold in the stockings they had hung to dry

    by the fireplace.

That, my friends, is why we leave our stockings out for Santa Claus .

    TheGospelofLuke, 2:1-20

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that allthe world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of

Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from

Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is calledBethlehem (because he was of the house and lineage of David), to be taxed with Mary his

espoused wife, being with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were

accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and

wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for

them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping

watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord come upon them, and the glory of

the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them,

"Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For

unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall

be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger."

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, andsaying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will t oward men." And it came to

pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another:

"Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is to come to pass, which the

Lord hath made known unto us." And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and

the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying

which was told them concerning this child. And all that heard it wondered at those things which

were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her

heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had

heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

    Comic books.

Inspired by Egyptian hieroglyphics, the first comic books were written towards the end of the 19th century. They

    were

a series of line-drawn pictures, without any color or detail, illustrating simple but clever stories. Words were

    eventually

added so that plots could be more interesting. It was cartoonist Richard Fenton Outcault who introduced the balloon

    in

comics in 1896. In the balloon, he wrote his characters thoughts and dialogues, which was to become the standard

practice for virtually all comic book writers.

Comics were humorous when they first appeared. Some of the early comic book characters, such as Popeye and

    Krazy

Kat are still widely read to this very day. These early comic books are now considered art forms because, like art,

    they

have a timeless appeal that is cross-cultural. Popeye for instance is currently available in over sixty languages and has

been an identifiable figure among children the world over for generations.

In the late 1920s, comic book writers started to create adventure stories which were not written exclusively for

children, but for adults as well. In other words, comic books had fully evolved into a form of family entertainment by

1932. It was at this time that Superman and Batman, the two most popular comic book figures ever, were developed

    in

the US, and HergesTintin appeared in Europe. Comic books also started becoming more detailed, with creators

    using

intricate graphics, a wide spectrum of colors and even more complex story-lines. All contemporary characters, from

the enigmatic Spawn to the intellectual Calvin & Hobbes, have their roots in this initial thirty-year period of comic

    book

    development.
