crooge wakes in the night and the bells of the neighbouring church strike twelve. The firstspirit appears and introduces himself as the 3host of Christmas 4ast. 6is personal appearance

is ver) interesting7 he looks like a )oung bo), but at the same time, he looks old. 6is hair is

white 8tied in a pon)tail9, but he has no wrinkles. This spirit leads crooge on a 1ourne) into

some of the happiest and saddest moments of crooges past, events that would largel) shape

the current crooge. These include the mistreatment of crooge b) his uncaring father 8who

did not allow his son to return home from boarding school, not even at Christmas and was

abusive according to his sister, *ittle 2an9, the loss of a great love sacrificed for his devotion

to business, and the death of his sister, the onl) other person who ever showed love and

compassion for him who picked him up at boarding school to go home at Christmas. :nable

to stand these painful memories and his growing regret of them, crooge covers the spirit

with the cap 8which was made b) the sins of man and had a beam of light coming out of the

top9 it carries and he is returned to his room, where he falls asleep. 6e also noticed that the

light of the cap had never e;tinguished and this is a s)mbol because it is foreshadowing that

crooges light in him will never be e;tinguished 8his hope will never die9
