The Armistice agreement was signed at Compiegne, France after four years of brutal conflict between the German and Allied forces.

The guns fell silent on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and War finally gave way to peace.

Over one hundred thousand New Zealanders or ten per cent of the population at the time served overseas during the War and over eighteen thousand lost their lives, families and communities at home felt these losses acutely.

At the time of the Armistice fifty-eight thousand New Zealand troops were still serving overseas including twenty four thousand on the Western front where some of the bloodiest battles had been fought to finally decide the outcome of the War in favour of the Allies.

The Armistice Centenary gives us the chance to acknowledge the loss and trauma of the First World War and to reflect on Peace and

Hope as the Centenary comes to a closure.

Please join with us to commemorate with a service at St Davids Church at 9.30am on Sunday 11th November followed by a dedication at the Town Clock Memorial from 10.45am.

We WILL remember them

Those of us who are often sick with

infections may well be experiencing

long-term stress. Stress affects the

whole body and the immune system

and is particularly affected by

chronic low-grade stress. In fact,

stress-related problems are the root

cause of approximately 75-90

percent of doctor visits.

Most people today associate stress

with worry, but stress has a much

broader meaning to your body. We

may not realize how much stress our

bodies are actually experiencing.

Any kind of change, whether it be

emotional, physical, environmental,

hormonal or illness-related can be

stressful to the body. Just generally

striving too hard on a daily basis

takes a physiological toll. Even

positive events, such as getting a

promotion at work or taking a

vacation, can be stressful and can

gradually weaken health without us

realizing what is happening. If we

have recently experienced a change

in sleep patterns, feels fatigued,

anxious, lacks enjoyment for life, or

has multiple aches and pains, it is

highly likely that they are

overstressed.

Clinics in Ohakune, Taihape,

Whanganui

Other signs that our body may be

stressed:

• Do you have Morning fatigue on, or shortly after rising, even if you are getting 8 hours of sleep?

• Do you wake tired and feel the only way to get going is with coffee or sweet drinks?

• Do you have a mid-afternoon low?

• Are you less able to handle stress or stressful situations?

• Do you feel better after evening meal and get a second wind at approximately 11:00 pm? Then want to stay up until 1-2:00am?

• Do you have decreased or lack of libido?

• Do you lack focus and concentration or have a “brain fog”?

• Are you more prone to infections or illnesses and are slower to recovery from illness or major stress?

• Do you have “fatigue that Simply cannot be overcome”, and cannot find out why?

If you have any or all the above

symptoms, would you like help?

Book an appointment today.

Council wants you to

“Tell us what you want”

Council is committed to developing

its waste minimisation initiatives, and

as part of this we are seeking your

feedback about the introduction of a

kerbside recycling and / or rubbish

and recycling service in the

residential areas of Turakina, Ratana,

Koitiata, Scotts Ferry, Bulls, Marton,

Crofton, Hunterville, Mangaweka and

Taihape. So, the postcard asks you to

tick which service you want. There

are three options:

- Kerbside recycling service

This would be a fortnightly

collection. Residents would be

supplied with 1 wheelie bin for

plastics, cardboard, paper and cans

and 1 crate for glass – jars and

bottles. Residents would continue

to make their own arrangements

for general rubbish (you would

purchase bags or dispose of your

own rubbish). The approximate

cost of this option is $125 per

property, per year.

- Kerbside rubbish and

recycling service

This would be a fortnightly

collection for recycling and

weekly collection for rubbish.

Residents would be supplied with

1 wheelie bin for plastics,

cardboard, paper and cans and 1

crate for glass – jars and bottles

and 1 small wheelie bin for

rubbish. The approximate cost of

this option is $195 per property,

per year.

- Status Quo

Things would remain as they are

now – i.e. no Council service for

recycling or rubbish collection.

Residents would continue to

purchase bags or bins from a private

operator and choose how to

A chance meeting in 1997 with

Taihape’s Brown Sugar owner’s

resulted in sketches on a serviette

of a thrown gumboot being passed

on to the Gumboot Country

Promotions Inc (GCP) committee.

After much discussion and

consultation with Jeff, he was

commissioned to build the

gumboot as a celebration of the

millennium and to identify

Taihape’s icon in the most

appropriate rural art medium,

corrugated iron.

Completing his residency in

Wanganui in June 2000 Jeff stayed

with Bill & Jan Byford and using the

Byford Construction yard as the

building site, completed this

delightful icon for Taihape in August

2000. Under the supervision of Jeff

and Byford’s engineer it was

carefully placed on a transporter

and at the site lifted by a front-end

loader for welding to the concrete

anchors. The site in the Outback

was only an interim measure.

With the building of the new toilet

block in the Outback the relocation

of the gumboot to SH1 was

essential and timely. With the

energy generated through Keep

Taihape Beautiful (KTB) to take up

the Gumboot Park Development

Project & the threat of permanent

storage of the gumboot the priority

to relocate the gumboot became

paramount.

However, it was vital to ensure that

this high-profile art piece was sited

in the best position considering the

right elevation and most fitting

surrounds. To achieve this fill and

rocks were required in the chosen

site and landscaping, paths and

lighting were essential to allow the

public physical access to it while

creating a natural environment for

photographers.

Compliances by Transit for the

Mataroa Road preferred site had

eased and on Thursday the 16th

November 2006 HEB-Smithbridge

transported the gumboot to the SH

1 location. With the Councils policy

for public art works the gumboot

sits under council’s long term care

and maintenance.

To date the gumboot has interested

and intrigued the public from all

over the world. It is photographed,

climbed on, sat on and touched by

many and now at the more

accessible site it will continue to

provide much interest to the S.H.1

traffic.

To complete the project, Keep

Taihape Beautiful, is installing a sign

board with the story of the

gumboot & Council have installed a

parking bay. The committee of KTB

is grateful to the generous

sponsorship of companies and

individuals who quickly came to the

party & supplied product, service

and cash to get the project

completed.

Taihape is most fortunate to have

such a prestigious artwork in the

town created by such a world-

renowned artist.

The location on SH1 gives it the

kudos it deserves.
