‘SOUVENT ME SOUVIENT’ ‘I often remember’

Share your successes after Christ’s with the next generation

‘I Often Remember’ - the motto of The Lady Margaret Beaufort, foundress of Christ’s, is a fitting expression of the College’s enduring gratitude to its benefactors. For over five centuries, each successive generation of Christ’s students has enjoyed the benefits of a Cambridge education through the generosity of its predecessors.

Among the many generous gifts Christ’s has received, legacies of all sizes have been particularly important. Friends and well-wishers, Fellows and Members have remembered the College in their Will, choosing to bequeath from £100 upwards. All legacies, large or small, can make a real difference.

By making a gift in your Will to Christ’s, you will be playing an active part in securing its foundation for a successful future.

A Christ’s education can be inspiring and transformational, opening up a world of opportunities and experiences to our students during their time at College and after they graduate.

However, our ability to remain competitive and to educate the brightest students, regardless of background, will continue to depend on the extraordinary generosity of our supporters. Here are just some of the ways your gift can help:

A t t r a c t i n g Ta l e n t

Help us continue to attract and support the brightest students, regardless of their background, offering them financial support where needed.

A d v a n c i n g K n o w l e d g e

Ensure that our students experience the very highest standard of teaching, by providing Fellowships to attract and retain the best teachers and researchers.

B r o a d e n i n g H o r i z o n s

Encourage a broad educational experience, by helping us provide better facilities for music, sport and the arts.

We welcome support for all areas of the College’s activity.

“To see the Yusuf Hamied Bursary awarded to me was one of the happiest moments in my career as a student. I will certainly put in the best of my efforts in fulfilling the purpose of this bursary in my Natural Sciences degree”– Kripa Balachandran, 2011

A R e s i d u a r y L e g a c y

This is a gift of all or a percentage of the net residue of your estate, after all specific legacies, debts, fees and other liabilities have been met. This gift is particularly straightforward as you neither have to quantify the sum nor worry about inflation when you draw up your will.

A R e v e r s i o n a r y L e g a c y

This gift has the advantage of providing for your family first and then benefiting the College. It involves leaving your assets to a named beneficiary, such as your spouse or other dependant, for their lifetime, after which your chosen portion of your assets reverts to the College on their death.

A C o n d i t i o n a l L e g a c y

This provides for the eventuality that if any named beneficiary in your Will does not survive you, their entitlement will pass to the College.

S p e c i f i c o r N o n - M o n e t a r y L e g a c y

If you choose, you can leave shares, property, and other valuables to the College.

A M o n e t a r y L e g a c y

Leave a specified sum of money, which can be index-linked to prevent its value decreasing by inflation.

TYPES OF LEGACY

There are several ways of leaving a legacy to Christ’s

Your lawyer can advise you on including a legacy to Christ’s in your Will.

It is simple to include a legacy to the College in your Will at the time you arrange it with your solicitor. You can also add a codicil to amend your existing Will.

Christ’s charitable status may also offer you the opportunity to reduce the tax due on your estate. The benefits vary internationally, but your financial adviser is best placed to advise you.

A legacy to Christ’s should refer to the College in its full official title. An appropriate form of words would be:

“I give to the Master, Fellows and Scholars of Christ’s College, Cambridge (Registered Charity Number 1137540) the residue / a proportion of the residue of my estate / the sum of £(amount) free of tax for them to apply in such a manner as they think fit for the benefit of the College, and I declare that the receipt of the Bursar or other authorised officer for the time being of the College shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my Executors.”

It is very helpful to have an indication of planned bequests, not least so that we can express our thanks to you for your generosity and kindness. If you decide to remember Christ’s College in your Will, we hope that you will complete the form provided with this brochure so that we can thank you personally and welcome you to membership of the Fisher Society.

Th e F i s h e r S o c i e t y

Christ’s has a long tradition of recognising its historic benefactors, without whose support the College would not have flourished over the centuries. If you do wish to remember Christ’s in your Will, you will be included automatically in the Fisher Society for legacy benefactors, named after John Fisher, one of the College’s most generous benefactors and our Lady Margaret’s confessor. All members of the Society will be invited to regular events in College, and will receive a specially-commissioned silver pin.
