FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Family Perspective: Today’s gospel reminds us to be shepherds for our children who depend on us to be their guides and role models. Where are we leading them? When they “hear our voice” what message do they hear?

Marriage Moments: After the last child leaves home, Mom and Dad may wake up and wonder who they are looking at. Somewhere over the years, they've gotten so involved in their children's lives that they forgot about each other. Prepare for an empty nest by paying attention to your honey today. Plan a date for this week.

“Life is a journey, along different roads,

different paths, which leave their mark on us.

We know in faith that Jesus seeks us out. He

wants to heal our wounds, to soothe our feet

which hurt from traveling alone, to wash each

of us clean of the dust from our journey.”

Good Shepherd Collection: This weekend all parishes and missions in the Diocese of Erie are taking a special collection to support the needs of our retired Diocesan priests. This special collection on Good Shepherd Sunday will assist those dedicated priests who are elderly, seriously ill or incapacitated and in need of supplementary assistance for expenses such as non-insured medical costs, nursing home and long-term care assistance. As the number of retired priests increases in the upcoming years the Priest Retirement Plan will need to be adequately funded to meet their future needs. Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of priests who have served faithfully and serve now as a "thank you" for their many years of faithful service. Help provide them the same love and generosity they provided for us for generations. Our diocesan website www.ErieRCD.org/goodshepherd.htm contains lists with the residence of our retired priests. May we suggest sending a priest who has touched your life a note or card sometime this year letting him know you still remember him? Consider adopting one of our priests as a prayer partner and pray for them and send an occasional note.

Child Protection and Creating Safe Environments Child Abuse Prevention Month: Child abuse remains a national problem. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services there were 742,000 instances of confirmed child abuse. Through scripture and Catholic teachings we are called to protect the life and dignity of all human persons, no matter how young or old. Working to prevent child abuse is an important response to what we are called to do as Church. To see what the Diocese of Erie is doing to help create safe environments, check out http://www.eriercd.org/protectyouth.htm A Grief Support Group meets the third Monday of each month at Our Lady of Mercy Church. The next meeting is on Monday, April 18 at 7pm in the parish parlor. Each session includes prayer and discussion around topics that pertains to the grief process. For more information contact Donna Clark in the parish office at 899-5342.

PARTNERED!

I was pleased to hear (but not too surprised) that St. Mark and Mt. Calvary Parishes are being partnered. That means that two independent parishes share one pastor, pastoral council, office and staff. Each parish would have its own parish church, finances and finance council. Please keep in mind that the plan that the Bishop announced last Tuesday is a draft and is not final. It is intended to give the Catholics of our diocese an idea of the way the restructuring is conceived at this time. On Friday, the diocese opened the diocesan website for feedback from people. I urge the St. Mark parishioners who wish to give input to the Diocesan Planning Committee to go to http://www.eriercd.org/planning.asp. This site will be available until May 20th. The recommendations that are received will be reviewed by the diocesan planning committee including the Bishop and a final plan will be drawn from them. That will be finished in mid-September. The

For Next Week’s Readings Reflecting on the Word:

We don’t think up things out of the blue, though they seem to come out of the blue. The insight that set the Evangelist’s quill to papyrus came up out of the earth, right up out of the Church’s early experience. The early community already knew how love renews, wipes away tears, opens one to new worlds. They had seen it in Jesus. They had seen it in his relationship with the beggar, the blind man, the embarrassed couple at Cana, the weary sinner. They had known his love themselves. They knew the shape of love Jesus talked about; they’d had a brush with heaven.

And they would soon know the cost as well as the rewards of choosing to respond with humble love. The first disciples gathered around the table at the Last Supper would soon be appalled by the forces of evil that would be unleashed and would break entirely over the earth. And they would see that the love that is stronger than death would reign in the end.

implementation of the restructuring plan will take effect in February of 2017.

Bishop Persico and members of his Planning Team said (as reported in the Erie Times News) that merging and partnering parishes would help create vibrant parishes with enhanced opportunities for worship, pool resources for more effective evangelizat ion and outreach, ensure optimum utilization of clergy and create efficiencies in op e ra t i o n . B i sh o p Per s i co continued: “Planning needs to be part of our mindset… Change shows we are alive and responding to the needs of our time.” The same Holy Spirit that guided our diocese through the post WWII years with its rapid increase in the number of newly founded parishes and the growth of parochial schools will lead us through these changes as well.

In his letter to the diocesan priests dated April 6, 2016, Bishop Persico explained that restructuring is not new. In part he wrote: “In the

course of our diocese’s 163-year history, nearly 150 parishes, missions or “church stations” have been restructured in some manner – through merger, partnering, and in some instances, through closing. April, however, marks the first time that parish restructuring will involve so many of our parishes at one time.” Since 1975, the year I was ordained, very few parishes have been restructured or closed. Even so, those changes involved a grieving period for those who lived through them. It is only afterward that the benefits of restructuring are understood and accepted as necessary and beneficial.

In this Easter season, we are celebrating the rebirth that Jesus’ resurrection brought about. We are a Church, ever new, ever vital. Like all the chapters of salvation history that have preceded this one, the current chapter will have a happy ending.

Fr. Dan

Questions for the week:

Jesus knew full well the power of example. The “washing of the feet” that we commemorate every Holy Thursday was one way that he exercised that power. It was thanks to that example that the disciples never got caught up in the trappings of their leadership positions and persisted in their service to others.

In today’s Gospel, we find Jesus promoting the use of example. He tells his disciples to “love one another” because he knew that, if they did so, they would be exercising the single most effective means of winning others to the faith. They’d be providing good example.

Discuss the different ways in which example has helped or hindered conversion to the Christian faith.

What are some other ways in which the power of example has worked a blessing?

Discuss incidences in your life in which example proved a powerful force.
