MASS FOR THE PEOPLE

Pray for Anthony Romano, Patricia Henry, Anthony Coco and

all who have gone to their heavenly reward and all who are sick

or recuperating at home or in nursing homes.

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by

the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate

nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry. The

devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to

become bread.” — Lk 4:1-3

The offices of Holy Spirit and Holy Trinity Churches will be closed on Monday, February 15th.

LENT

A TIME FOR MERCY

Meditate on Mercy

Pope Francis warns that “practice of mercy is waning in the wider culture,” and too often, “the word seems to have dropped out of

use.” Dedicate some of your Lenten prayer time to meditating on the need for mercy in our world. We tend to think of mercy as

compassion or sympathy, but the word has a much deeper meaning. Mercy means that we enter into the suffering of other people,

place ourselves inside their hearts and minds, and then respond to their needs in the same way that God responds to our needs when

we cry out to him. Ask yourself: Who is in need of mercy in your family, your workplace, your community, your country, and entire

world?

“It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters.

Mercy is the force that awakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with

hope.” —Pope Francis

Reflect on the Life of Mary

This Jubilee Year is entrusted to Mary, our Mother of Mercy. Set aside time during this Lenten season to contemplate the life of

Mary. Her “yes” when asked to become the mother of Jesus, her visit to Elizabeth, the circumstances surrounding the birth of Jesus,

her hidden life with him in Nazareth, how she witnessed to extraordinary acts of mercy he exhibited in his public life, and the way

she stood by the foot of the cross as he forgave the people who crucified him. Ask yourself: In what ways does your life reflect the

life of Mary?

“May the sweetness of her countenance watch over us in this Holy Year, so that all of us may rediscover the joy

of God’s tenderness.” —Pope Francis

Youth Mass Next Sunday, February 14th: Par t of Youth

Ministry this year is requiring the Youth Ministry teens to

come to an 11:00 A.M. mass on the opposite months that

they have their teen masses. This Sunday will be one of

these masses. Youth will have participation in this mass in

music, lecturing, etc. Please welcome our teens or as the

pope likes to call them, our “young” church.

Youth Ministry Time Change: Next Sunday, Feb. 21st,

grades 6-10 will meet at their regular time (grades 6-8 from

6:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. Grades 9-10 will meet from

7:15 P.M.-8:15 P.M.) at Spirit Central. The following week,

Feb. 28th, all grades 6-10 will meet together in the church

for Praise, Worship & Adoration from 6:00 P.M.-7:15 P.M.

This is a change from the published schedule at the

beginning of the year.

CHANGE OF HEART LENTEN TREE

I invite everyone to begin the

Lenten journey by participating in

our “Change of Heart” tree.

At the entrances of the church

you will find purple hearts. Please

take six hearts, one for each week

of Lent. Each week we ask you to

think about something that you

would like to do for the week to

grow closer to God, to help with your journey of conversion.

Write that promise on your heart and if you fulfill your

promise, bring the heart back on the following Sunday and

hang it on the tree.

We will do this continually each week of Lent. By the end

of Lent we should have a tree bursting with changed purple

hearts. This is also a reminder that we should always bring

our hearts to mass.

The Adult Faith Formation committee will offer Fr. Michael Gaitley’s program, 33 Days to

Morning Glory, as a weekly Lenten retreat for everyone interested. Fr. Gaitley is a priest from the

Divine Mercy Shrine. The book explores the devotions of four Saints in consecrating ourselves to

Jesus through Mary. Each participant will need to purchase the book and read a short passage each

day and meet weekly with the group beginning Wednesday, February 24th following evening

prayer from 7:30 P.M.-9:00 P.M. at Holy Trinity Parish Hall. (When evening devotions move to

Holy Spirit in March the group will meet there.) At the end of the 33 days of preparation, we

celebrate our Consecration to Mary as we have become closer to God in this profound way.

There will be no Faith Formation on Sunday, February 14th

and 21st. Enjoy your winter break!
