This unit is designed for honors 11th grade. The age group will generally fall between 16 and 17.
There are no prerequisites for this unit.The unit will last ten school days or a total
of two weeks.This unit covers a broad range of topics
that combine to create a greater understanding of the Cold War.

Day one:Brief overview of the topics to be covered in
the unit. A pre-assessment quiz . Lecture covering the end of WWII and the
beginning of the decolonization of Europe and elsewhere.
Students assigned a website reading for homework.
Day Two:A brief video presentation from history.com
on what sparked the Cold War. Read in class from the book Why Nations Go
To War chapter 6. Open discussion of U.S. containment policy. A writing assignment asking for students’
opinion on the subject of containment will be assigned for homework.
Days Three and Four:Open discussion of students’ opinions concerning
containment. Class participate in a map making project worth
10 points for participation.Day four : lecture addressing U.S. Soviet posturing during the containment period.Lecture supported with content from www.besthistorysites.net.
Days Five and Six:Lecture on McCarthyism, conformity and
patriotismOpen discussion concerning the lecture. A three to five page research paper on
McCarthyism assignment for homework.Day six: movie day. Red Dawn.
Days Seven and Eight:Conclusion of the movie. Assignment, short writing on the movie.Day eight:Lecture covering the Red Scare and how it
developed. Discussion of advancements in technology
during the Cold War. Additional discussion, the rise of rogue nations will follow the lecture.
Days Nine and Ten:PowerPoint presentation reviewing for the
test.Day ten is test day. The test will consist of equal parts multiple
choice, matching and identifications along with one essay. The test will be worth 100 points.
Research paper on McCarthyism will be collected.
