Acronym Explanation

ABCODE 1-Specification in the CICS System Recovery Table for an abend code to be intercepted by CICS. 2-Parameter for the CICS ABEND, used to specify an abend code for the transaction being terminated. 3-A parameter for the CICS ASSIGN command, used to determine the abend code if the task has been terminated.

ABDUMP Option of the CICS ASSIGN command used to indicate whether a dump has been produced and its abend code.

ABEND 1-CICS command to abnormally terminate a transaction. 2-MVS macro to abnormally terminate an MVS program and/or task.

ABSTIME Parameter of the CICS ASKTIME or FORMATTIME commands, requesting time be returned as a packed decimal value.

ACB Control block used to manage access to a VSAM data set, VTAM or TCAM network.

ACCUM Function of CICS BMS by which multiple maps can be used to build a logical message before sending.

ACID Term used to describe the recovery/restart properties of a transaction: atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability.

ADDRESS CICS command which can obtain the storage address of various major task-oriented control blocks or areas.

AEY9 CICS abend code indicating an invalid CICS command has been issued.

AEYD CICS abend code indicating a storage violation.

AIB Call format for issuing DL/I requests with IMS DBCTL.

AICA CICS abend code indicating the runaway task interval has expired.

AID Attention Identifier. A one byte data field used to indicate the method used to initiate a transaction from a 3270-like device.

ALIAS A 1-4 character alternate name for a CICS transaction.

ALTSCREEN 3270 screen size to be used for a terminal that has SCRNSIZE(ALTERNATE) specified in its profile.

AMODE Addressing mode.

AOR Term associated with a CICS region to which transactions are routed from a terminal-owning region for processing.

APCG CICS abend code if a program occupies all the available DSA storage.

API Documented interface by which one program can call upon the services of another program or environment.

APOST CICS Translator option specifying that an apostrophe is to be used to delineate literal values.

APPC A LU6.2-based protocol for use in conversational or client/server configurations.

APPLID CICS initialization parameter used to identify this CICS region as a VTAM application.

APPN Used as part of CICS support of VTAM generic resources.

ASIS Option of CICS SEND, RECEIVE and CONVERSE commands, indicating that the data is to be handled in transparent mode, with no recognition of control characters, and accepting any of the

ASKIP BMS map specification indicating that data cannot be entered into the defined field and the cursor will skip to the next field.

ASKTIME CICS command which updates the date and time-of-day fields in the EIB.

ASRA CICS transaction abend; a program check has occurred.

ASRB CICS transaction abend; a program has issued an MVS ABEND.

ASRD CICS transaction abend; a program has attempted to issue a CICS macro or access the CSA or TCA.

ASSIGN CICS command which requests a value from outside the application program's local environment.

ATNI CICS abend code, indicating a network error while using intersystem communication.

Atomicity Changes made to protected resources within the same unit of work are atomic; either all happened or none happened.

ATTRB Operand of the DFHMDF macro, used to define an attribute byte for a 3270 data stream.

Automatic Initiate Descriptor CICS control block used for automatic task initiation due to a transient data or interval control event.

Backout Function of removing any changes to CICS protected resources performed by an active CICS unit of work prior to a task or system failure.

BASESPACE Area of storage in which all tasks execute if CICS transaction isolation is not being used.

BDAM Operating system access method for randomly accessed files (non-sequential).

Bean-managed persistence EJB entity bean which manages its own state.

BIF CICS-provided program routine, such as DEEDIT.

Bit map Graphics image file.

BMP IMS application region run under control of the IMS control region, having access to online data bases and message queues.

BMS CICS-provided facility for the mapping of terminal device data streams, and an application programming interface which offers device and data format independence.

BSAM Operating system access method for sequential files.

BSC Means of data communication in which the synchronization of characters is controlled by timing signals generated at the sending and receiving stations.

BTAM Communication access method supported by earlier releases of CICS; for start/stop and binary synchronous terminals.

BWO Means of taking backups of VSAM files that CICS is currently updating.

Cache Term used to describe a data holding facility.

CAS Coordinating Address Space in CICSPlex which is a specific function of the IBM Coupling Facility.

CAVM Mechanism in XRF which provides integrity for a CICS system.

CEBR CICS transaction used to browse temporary storage queues.

CECI CICS transaction used to check the syntax of CICS EXEC commands and optionally execute the command.

CECS CICS transaction used to check the syntax of CICS EXEC commands.

CEDA Online transaction as used with the CICS Resource Definition Online facility.

CEDF CICS-provided transaction used to invoke the execution diagnostic facility program to display application program EXEC CICS commands before and after their execution.

CEMT CICS-provided transaction which can be used to display and/or alter CICS environmental information.

CESF CICS sign-off transaction, disconnecting an operator from the system.

CESN CICS sign-on transaction, for entering operator userid and password.

CEST CICS transaction used to invoke a subset of the master terminal transaction.

CETR CICS transaction used to control CICS tracing activity.

CICS IBM product for transaction management.

CICSplex Set of interconnected CICS regions.

CICSVR IBM product which can be used for backout and/or forward recovery of VSAM files as used by CICS systems.

COBOL English-like programming language, for use in batch or online environments.

COMMAREA User-defined area used to communicate information from one program or transaction to another.

Common System Area Major MVS storage area, below the 16mb line, containing pageable system data areas addressable by all active virtual address spaces.

Control block Generic term referring to an addressable storage area which contains environmental information and address pointers to other related information.

CSA Major CICS control block used to control the operation of CICS.

CSMT CICS master terminal transaction in older CICS products before the introduction of CICS command level support and the CEMT transaction.

CSP IBM product for application generation.

CTG Software which can reside on an outboard server machine such as Windows, AIX or Sun Solaris, or on the S/390 mainframe. CTG can be used to transform web browser requests into CICS invocation using ECI, EPI or EXCI.

CTLCHAR Option for terminal commands to send a write control character to a 3270 terminal or printer.

CWA Single CICS control block which is allocated at system initialization and persists until CICS termination; it can also be used to store user data.

CWS Identifies CICS support of the Internet beginning with CICS TS for OS/390 1.3.

Data Set Name Sharing MVS option which allows one set of control blocks to be used for the base and path in a VSAM alternate index.

DB2 IBM relational data base system

DCT Collection of intra- and extra-partition queue definitions as used by CICS.

DEEDIT A CICS-provided built-in function routine, used to remove non-numeric data from an EBCDIC data field, right-align and pad left with zeroes.

DEQ Request to discontinue the use of or the contention for a serially reusable resource.

DFHAID CICS-provided standard attention identifier list used in testing the contents of the EIBAID field.

DFHBMSCA List of 3270 attribute byte values and common combinations of values, equated to symbolic names for easier programming.

DFHCOMMAREA Required symbolic name of a COMMAREA passed between programs.

DSA Number of CICS DSAs above and below the 16mb line, for which the characteristics and usage varies.

EBCDIC Machine code set used by IBM computers such as the S/390.

ECB Operating system control block used to represent the status of an event.

EDF CICS-provided testing facility which can display transaction information before and after the execution of CICS commands.

EIB CICS control block which provides run time information to a transaction.

EIBAID EIB field which contains the attention identifier used with the last terminal input operation from a 3270 or similar device.

EIBRESP EIBRESP and EIBRESP2 are EIB fields which contain a number and other information regarding the RESP (response) condition raised as a result of the previous EXEC CICS command.

EIP Invoked when a CICS application issues an EXEC CICS command.

ENQ Facility by which applications can serialize their use of a given real or symbolic resource.

EXEC Term which refers to the CICS Command Level programming interface.

FCT Collection of file resource definitions as used by CICS.

FDUMP COBOL compiler option.

FEPI CICS-provided facility which enables the user to implement transactions in a (front end) CICS system to read and/or write data with another (backend) CICS system using LU0 or LU2 data streams.

FOR Term associated with a CICS region which is a single point of access to CICS files on behalf of other CICS systems.

GENERIC CICS file control option to read records from a VSAM KSDS by using only a partial key.

GETMAIN CICS command used to acquire main storage from CICS-managed dynamic storage areas.

HANDLE CICS command whereby an application can specify particular exception conditions for which it wants to receive control, should the condition occur.

HANDLE ABEND CICS command used to activate, cancel or reactivate an exit for abnormal condition processing.

HANDLE AID CICS command which specifies the address of a routine to receive control when an AID is received, based on the method used to initiate the input.

ICE Control block used to represent a time-related event.

ICP CICS management module which provide time related services.

IMS IBM product which provides hierarchical data management (DL/I) organization and services and terminal and network management.

INVREQ CICS commands will raise this exception condition when something is invalid about the request issued by the application program.

IRC CICS architecture and software which enables communication between CICS regions and between CICS and non-CICS regions on the same operating system image.

JCT Collection of journal and/or log resource definitions as used by CICS.

KSDS VSAM file organization.

LE Can be used in a CICS environment to provide a runtime library that establishes a common execution environment for programming languages.

LPAR Partitioned MVS storage in which a separate image of an operating system can execute, and is comprised of its own set of resources.

LSR VSAM facility in which multiple files can share the same buffers and strings.

MAPFAIL An exception condition raised when no usable data is received from a 3270 in response to a BMS RECEIVE command.

MAPONLY Option of the BMS SEND MAP command used to send only default data from the map.

MAPSET Set of one or more BMS maps to be used by a CICS application program.

MDT A MDT in a 3270 data stream indicates whether the data field has been modified.

MRO Two or more interconnected CICS regions on the same operating systems image among which transaction routing and/or function shipping can occur.

NSR VSAM option where data and index buffers are not shared with other VSAM files.

PA key One or several keyboard keys on an IBM 3270 display station or similar device which can be programmed to invoke various functions.

PCT Table containing CICS transaction definitions, used in earlier releases of CICS.

PF-key 12 or 24 keys on most PC and workstation keyboards which can be programmed to invoke various functions.

PLT List of programs to be executed as part of CICS system initialization or system termination.

PLTPI Program list table used during CICS system initialization.

PLTSD A program list table used during CICS system shutdown.

Pseudo-conversational A CICS term used to describe a unit of work which appears to the end user as one transaction but is implemented using multiple transactions internal to CICS.

RCT Set of definitions for the CICS use of DB2.

RDO CICS-provided facility for defining the attributes of resources used in a CICS environment.

RESP RESP and RESP2 are data areas into which indicative information is returned regarding exception conditions for the CICS command just executed.

RID Record identification.

RIDFLD The key, RBA, RRN or block reference for the record to be read from VSAM or BDAM.

SDT Data table residing in one CICS region or partition, accessible by other CICS systems. Similar to function shipping and file-owning regions.

SIP CICS program which prepares CICS for execution.

SIT Table containing user specifications the control the CICS initialization process.

SNA An architecture, including specifications for the logical structure, formats, protocols and operational sequences for transmitting information through, and controlling the configuration and operations of networks.

STRNO CICS specification for the number of concurrent file requests that can be issued against a file or LSRPOOL.

TCT Collection of CICS terminal definitions.

TCTTE Entry in the TCT which contains the characteristics of a terminal and its operational status.

TCTUA Storage area associated with a terminal entry for use by customer programs to store data associated with the terminal.

TD Common abbreviation for the CICS management module and its associated functions for intra- and extra-partition data queues.

TRT CICS table used to record information about exception conditions which may be useful for any first failure data capture. Additionally, at the user's option other levels of tracing can occur.

TWA Optional storage area, associated with a task, commonly used by application programs to store or pass data relevant to the task.

VSAM File-oriented access method which provides for the definition and read/write usage of keyed, sequential and relative record files.
