Manthan International School Start this unit by explaining the importance of a fairy tale.

Cinderella stories are considered by many to be fairy tales. There is a lesson to be learned in most fairytales. They usually express a truth about life or something that happens in nature.Ask children what are the key features of a fairy tale. Look at a variety of fairy tales, for e.g. - Cinderella, Sleeping beauty, Snow white, Beauty and the beast etc. What is the same about them? Let them come up with their own idea of the similarities in fairy tale.

Teacher’s note:-

For your reference most fairy tales include: A beginning which starts with, “Once upon a time… Enchantment (magic) Some form of royalty or poverty A wicked character A kind character (who is usually treated badly) Problem in the middle Goodness rewarded in the end The story ending with, “they lived happily every after.”

Make a mind map of these common features of a fairy tale.

Mind map format is attached in the worksheet folder named “Common Features of Fairy Tales”.

Manthan International Schooleven though people may appear very different at times, often they have much in common. Explain the children that there are two main groups of the Cinderella version, one involving the supernatural animal. The other versions concentrate more on Cinderella’s ball.

Today they are going to read and watch the Chinese version of Cinderella story. This version has both elements in the story. It seems to be related to both types. It has the supernatural animal, which is the fish. It also has the ball, which is the cave festival. All the stories have the same good versus evil. Good conquers evil.
