Kiwanis Opening SessionJohn O'Leary is proof of the power of the human spirit. As a nine-year-old boy, John was burned on 100% of his body and given less than one percent to survive. He endured months in the hospital, years in therapy, dozens of surgeries, and lost all his fingers to amputation. Despite the odds, he not only survived - but thrived. John is a college graduate, business owner, hospital chaplain, international speaker, husband and father. His presentations have been described as “captivating, amazing and life-changing.” With emotional story-telling and great humor, John challenges and empowers every audience to dream again, re-ignite their passion and take positive action. Leadership LuncheonIn 1987, Rick Hansen wheeled through 34 countries in 26 months to raise awareness for people with disabilities. His inspiration continues today. In fact, the US$26 million raised during his original tour has grown to US$245 million in direct investments. Those funds have produced accomplishments ranging from the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre to a foundation, web-based accessibility ratings map, school program and more that are named for Rick. In May 2012, the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay finished retracing the Canadian segment of his original tour—this time with the participation of 7,000 people inspired by Rick’s determination to see a healthier and more inclusive world. Thursday late night entertainmentMore information coming soon! CKI Honors BreakfastHear from the CKI outstanding alumni award recipient and the humanitarian award winner during this special recognition ceremony. Kiwanis Closing SessionRenowned recording artist Sarah McLachlan will be honored at the Kiwanis convention’s closing session. She will accept the World Service Medal for her work in music education. Then she will address the audience and sing. Circle K members will be able to attend the closing session of the Kiwanis International Convention. Until you meet her on stage, visit her on iTunes. Vancouver Attractions It’s one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It’s multicultural. It’s young. It’s eco-friendly. It’s cutting edge. And it’s waiting for you. The Circle K International convention and Large Scale Service Project will take place in June 2013. So this is a good time to start discovering more about your host city. Spectacular by natureVancouver’s natural beauty was showcased on televisions around the world during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. From the Vancouver Convention Centre, you’ll be able to see some of that beauty: the skyscrapers of downtown Vancouver, the waters of Coal Harbour and the mountains of North Vancouver, a favorite with skiers. Outdoorsy? Check out Grouse Mountain, where you can soar up to 80 kilometers an hour (or about 50 miles an hour, if you don’t use the metric system) on a zipline through the mountain’s forests. If you’re less adventurous, grab some friends and take a walk through “the West Coast rainforest” of Stanley Park to see Vancouver’s abundant wildlife. Melting PotDid you know that Chinese—not French—is the second most common mother-tongue language in Vancouver? Multicultural residents have added Punjabi, German, Italian, Spanish and Tagalog to the city’s list of commonly spoken languages. But the residents’ multicultural influences go beyond language. Vancouver’s Chinatown—the third largest in North America—hosts festivals, parades and the outdoor Night Market, where you can buy Chinese cuisine. Main Street’s six-block Punjabi Market celebrates Indian-Pakistani culture, and Commercial Drive is home to numerous Italian coffee shops. City SightsVancouver has 12 distinct neighborhoods, each with its own flair. Read up about each neighborhood and find one—or more—that fits your style and interests. If you’re planning to shop, try Robson Street for its independent boutiques. Love architecture? Head southeast of the convention centre to Gastown, Vancouver’s oldest neighborhood, for Victorian-era buildings-turned-shops and the area’s famous steam clock. Food truck havenWithin walking distance from convention activities, you can get a quick—and cheap!—bite to eat from Vancouver’s food trucks. And you’ve got options—with seven food trucks in the downtown Vancouver area alone, you can eat what’s seasonally appropriate (Re-Up BBQ’s pulled pork), exotic (Soho Road’s naan kebabs) or innovative (Japadog’s Japanese-style hot dogs). Get a head start with Roaming Hunger’s food truck map.

Vancouver Tips Funding your CKI experiencesOne great benefit for CKI members is access to leadership training, district and international conventions and regional conferences. But sometimes those events require travel, lodging, food and registration fees. Here’s the good news: You don’t have to pay all of that on your own.In fact, the one-third plan can help you raise the money you need. Fundraise one-third of the cost yourself, ask your CKI club or student activities board to pay or fundraise another one-third and talk to your sponsoring Kiwanis club or local businesses about supporting the rest. And CKI’s got some new tools to help you out! Find the CKI event sponsorship toolkit and PowerPoint presentation to help you put the one-third plan into action. Cash and credit/debit cards

● Do not use a debit card on your hotel room. Hotels place monetary holds on debit cards (generally at least one extra night and sometimes more) which ties up your funds.

● US Banks automatically convert the currency when you use a credit card for purchases. You will only pay the converted rate. Some banks charge a conversion fee.

International texting, data, and

● Texts cost at least 50 cents per text. ● Once the CKI board spends four days in Vancouver, January 31-February 3, this section

will be updated with many helpful tips. CKI Board investigates VancouverThe CKI Board will be in Vancouver January 31-February 3. After this date and based on their experiences with restaurants and shopping in the area, helpful hints will be placed in this section.
